Upgrade to Run 38" Alienware Ultrawide Better

Hi all,

I recently bought a 38in Alienware ultrawide and want something to run it better…

My current setup is as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970
SSD: Kingston A400 480GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB
RAM: HyperX Fury DDR4 2666 C15 4x8GB
MBD: MSI Z170A GAMING M7 (MS-7976)

I'm on a bit of a budget new bubs arrive two weeks ago.

Two main ideas popped into my head about getting it to work better

  1. Upgrade the graphics and other components as necessary.
  2. Buy a new setup altogether.

The budget would be around 1k and preferring to buy before the end of the financial year.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Regards

You have twins and time for gaming?

    • That won’t last long.

You have twins and time for gaming?

It's a great time to reconnect with old hobbies, especially if you're on leave. When we had our kid, my wife felt pretty bored and sad after a month, so I encouraged her to pick up some old hobbies again and go back to work part time (I also temporarily went part time, so picked up looking after the little one on the days she was working). She ended up feeling heaps better and happier, and found everything much more fulfilling. Also helped her to become a happier and more involved parent :) If you're a parent, it's good to not have your life completely revolve around your kids :)

  • Gonna wanna stretch that budget a bit.

  • What does "run it better" mean to you? People don't usually buy computers around their monitors. What are you looking to do? Gaming? 3D Modelling? Netflix?

That monitor requires a powerful GPU to push enough frames
6900xt or RTX 3080 $1199 each at PCbyte

then start saving 3-500 for a CPU/MB upgrade.

  • The monitor was bought for work to get rid of the dual monitor setup.

I use it primarily for work purposes (architecture do BIM modeling etc. Although currently, I remote into a computer at work via my machine.) and then minimal gaming.

    Play:

    Battlefield
    Supreme commander

Just want it to look pretty not too worried about the best FPS sort of thing.

  • I did find this but again I'm unsure what it will be like.

  • You’ll be fine getting a 3070 or 3070ti for definitely less than 1k and simply swapping it out with the 970. You’ll end up with a little lopsided specs but you can upgrade the rest later. Unlikely you’ll get the full FPS out of the monitor in games though, but at least 60fps.

  • 60 sounds good to me! Got any suggestions on a good deal on a 3070?

What would you suggest afterwards to upgrade?
