Front/Rear Dash Cam with Persistent Rear View?

Hey all,

I'm looking to install a front & back dash cam setup which I can also use as a rear view camera.

I will obviously need to make compromises like no automatic turn-on when reversing, or sensor lines etc. But I want a setup that can at least persistently show the rear view so that I can glance at the dash cam screen when beginning to reverse. It's mainly to look for concealed objects (not for parking assistance).

I was looking to get this dual dashcam from Supercheap Auto, which does have a persistent front view, but you need to tap a button every time you want to view the rear cam feed.

Does anyone know of a setup that allows for a persistent view of the rear camera?

Thanks!

I believe you can get replacement rear view mirrors with persistent rear view camera playback in them. May be worth considering.

Rear view cameras are generally aimed down to get an idea of obstacles and distance, which isn't the angle you'd want your dash cam to be

    • Understand. I guess I’m not too concerned about rear dash cam as most rear end accidents are not at fault.

I have the A129 Plus Duo and you can choose to only view the rear view if you like. However, the screen is only 2 inches, so you can't really see much, there could be lag (not sure) plus it depends where you install it.

PIP Mode There are four modes for live preview on the A129 LCD screen and via Wi-Fi while the rear camera is attached. Note: Picture in picture (PIP) mode is available only while the rear camera is attached.

    Front + Rear (Rear overlaid)
    Rear+ Front (Front overlaid)
    Front Only
    Rear Only

    • Thanks mate. This sounds good. Is the screen always on when car is running? Or do you need to press any buttons when wanting to see a camera feed?

What sort of car do you own? Unless you own a car with a pretty vertical rear windscreen you won't see stuff that is close to your car.

    • Good point. It’s an SUV with a spare wheel at the back. I may need to mount it outside, which I’m guessing most dash cams aren’t built for.

Get your phone out and hold it at the top of the glass facing down. You'll get a rough idea of what you'll be able to see.

No the dash cam cameras are not designed to be in the elements. You will be wanting something for like these.

They will require some sort of fitting to the outside of your vehicle but will give you a much better view of what it sounds like you actually want.
