Access to HDD For Passworded Laptop

Hi,

My father-in-law passed quite suddenly recently, and we're only just getting to grips with things.

My mother-in-law is trying to access his passworded laptop, but she can't remember the (windows10) login password. He managed a lot of their bills and administration on the laptop.

He didn't password files or anything and I believe it's just the win10 login which is the only password for the whole laptop.

Can anyone clarify if the password also locks out the HDD? I thought maybe to remove the HDD and hopefully view the files from another computer.

I didn't want to try (yet) just in case she remembers the password or takes the action the wrong way or indeed is fruitless exercise.

Thanks in advance.

As long as it's not from a vendor that has whole disk encryption setup out of the box (which you'll usually only see on business model lines), and your father-in-law didn't setup whole disk encryption himself, then you should just be able to pull the drive and plug it into another PC.

Access to his user files will still require his password, but administrative rights on the machine your using to access the drive will usually give you access.

    • Cheers - thanks for that :)

If it's a removable drive and you're savvy enough to do it, you can put that into an enclosure and plug in to access the files without password. As long as it's not encrypted, as Chandler stated.

an alternative option which doesn't require a screwdriver would be to make a bootable linux (i'd suggest ubuntu if you're new at the game) usb drive and then just boot into it. you should be able to access the files on the drive and copy them to your heart's content, and there is no chance of physical intrusion issues.

download latest ubuntu desktop iso here: https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

install it to any spare USB drive with rufus from here: https://rufus.ie/en/

    bon appetit!

Another way to access files on the computer would be to use a linux boot disc
Runs from cd/usb and int eh system ram
You can then access files and folders and copy to a prtable hdd
There are certainly ways to circumvent/reset the Windows login password too
Have done before - this link shows how (scroll down to The Hard Way) https://www.avast.com/c-recover-windows-password

I have done something similar to this before: How to crack your forgotten windows password.

Mind you that was on Win 7 and may not work for 10. There might be similar guides available for Win 10.

  • Cheers all for the replies. Given me a few leads.

Just a delicate situation as they're all important and non-backed up files/information.

Google "Linux Windows password reset ISO" and check the results.

I have used the process to reset Window's passwords. It does not help with bios passwords.

  • I've used this method with success for resetting a password on Windows 10 (Case 2).

  • Hopefully nothing unsavoury is found!

    • Too soon….. too soon.
