I have bought a new laptop. I want to ensure that everything from my existing laptop is transferred onto the new one. What's the best way to do that? Both are Dells running Windows 11, if that's relevant.
Best way to transfer all data / setup from old computer to new computer?

What is this "google" thing?
answers to your question.
Or Ask Jeeves?
It's where people ask for IT help.
Google is where IT goes to solve issues if turning it off and on doesn't fix it.
User save and restore, built into windows
Simply buy a portable drive of 500 GB or more, copy to and form that drive. That is best IMO. Cable transfers are generally way faster than anything else.
lol
It's probably easier (and better for the new laptop) if you just transfer personal files across (dropbox/g-drive/one drive) and install all the software you need.
It also gives you a chance to 'clean house'. Whenever I upgrade computers or nuke an OS I always copy everything to an external hard drive, and then only copy them off of the drive to the new computer when I need them. Photos/music/etc usually end up on there pretty quick, but its amazing how many programs/documents/downloads/videos/memes just never make it across to the new system because I don't actually need them as much as I thought I did.
- Put both computers on your network
On the old computer
- Right click on your C:\ drive > Properties > Sharing tab > Advanced Sharing
- Tick Share this folder, then give it a share name
- Click permissions, then click Add and enter your local username and add it, then back on the share pemissions page make sure it has read privileges.
- Go to settings > system > about, then take note of the device name
On the new computer
- Open file explorer and in the address bar enter \\device name of old computer\
- When prompted for credentials enter the username and password from the local account on your old computer.
- You can now view the files from your old computer and transfer them across to the new computer.
Enable file sharing over local network then drag and drop everything you want to copy over from old computer to new computer.
Transfer speed will be as fast as the wifi/ethernet speed is of your local network.Open laptop, pull out drive, put in new laptop. Fastest way for very large transfers.
the best way (IMO) to transfer from one computer to another is to not store anything on the PC itself. Instead have everything on a NAS (with proper backups etc) so that way it doesn't matter if you lose/destroy/spill coffee in the PC and need to replace it.
Of course if you're not going to buy a NAS and follow this principle, then depending on how much data you want to transfer, you'll have to pick the most appropriate method from above.
