What Did You Pay for New Tyres? 225/55/17

After a set of new tyres for my 2009 Subaru Forester XT -

Quiet tyres is the biggest priority.

Have seen Bridgestone 3 for 4 deal at the moment on the RE003 and Serenity plus tyres, from the website they come in at $259 each which seems a bit high….has been a while since I had to buy tyres though.

What tyres have you purchased recently, where from and how much did you pay?

Comments

  • Costco often does buy 3 get 1 free, check them out.

    • $674 for 4 (Inclusive of Tyre fitting and the free 4th tyre for the RE003) @Costco

How do you find the re003? They look good, but I assume they are going to be short lived

        • This! If you don’t want sports orientated driving there’s better tyres out there which you’ll get better life out of.

        • Not too short lived. I got 40k km out of a set on a Mazda sp25 and I "sometimes" like to drive with a bit of "spirit"

I bought a set of 225/45R17 a few months back, although I believe supply has gotten worse since then.
Michelin Primacy 4, was $688 for 4 fitted via Tyresales. Good balance of low noise and high grip.
Got the same tyres in 205/55R16 for another car (Corolla) through Costco recently, was somewhere around $630 iirc.

Rubber hardens over time, so old tyres will tend to become noisier, and less grippy, than they were when new.
If you haven't bought tyres in a long while, it's likely that just going to a new set will make a big difference. I personally wouldn't worry about trying to find the quietest possible tyre, and this is coming from someone who despises noise. Going from 9 (!) year old Yokohamas to the brand new Michelins on the Corolla was like night and day. Ended up being around 10dB quieter on the freeway.

    • Thanks for the review !

Costco seems to have the goods

  • Quiet = Primacy 3 or 4

  • For what it's worth I was in a rush to get new tyres so I can pass rego check and my local Bridgestone franchise price matched Tempe Tyres/Tyresales plus gave a little discount on top. As mentioned above good to get tyres that are manufactured more recently as the rubber hardens was reading/heard/rumour that some tyres cheaper as they are from last season from the northern hemisphere. More important if you do not need to change too often

The guy from Mycar (Kmart) let me go thru the store room and pick my preferred profile.
They also seem to place them correctly with the right dot to the valve requiring least balancing.
Given the time I had wasted with others promising this was fine with me.

      What?

      • Looking at overall costs of car being in and back perfect, good warranty so no complaints. Ah even got flybuys!

        • I still have absolutely no idea what you are saying….

      • payless69 means the tyre profile.

        • Got that, but why want a different profile from OEM?

          • @oscargamer: Different handling characteristics - Comfort/Grip/Feel/Feedback

            • @m0tyrider: And you need to physically go through a tyre store room to work out those features?

            • @m0tyrider: Sounds like you're getting mixed up with tread pattern. Tyre profile is the side wall of the tyre. You can't randomly pick the profile size based on preference. it needs to be close to OEM so that the speedo doesn't read incorrectly. I think that's why Oscar is getting confused.

              • @Broke-Ken: No I am not getting mixed up, as the sidewall size does impact all the things I mentioned.

I personally wouldn't pick it at random.

example; people using their cars on the track may deviate from the stock sizing for the reasons mentioned above.

                • @m0tyrider: You are right in a sense, but Payless's comment still doesn't make sense, you wouldn't be able to figure that out by browsing the store room. Going into the storeroom to check out the tread pattern is more plausible.

I guess only Payless can clarify what they meant.

  • bought 4 serenity plus last year in similar 4-for-3 deal, fitted on a mazda6… much better than previous OEM bridgestones and michelin, the serenity+ being quieter and grippy in the wet (which seemed endless in sydney)

    • Do you remember what you paid?

  • 225/55r17 aren't a Goldilocks size (not overly common).

Primacy4 will be around $250 FBV.

The Bridgestone price for both tyres is around the money.

    • What's the common size in a 17? 45 profile?

  • Hard to beat these for price - and they will be quiet
