Does This Look Like Termite Damage?

Noticed that our garage shelf wasn't looking too good so we took it down to check it out. But apart from that wood, we don't see any sign of termites elsewhere, not sure if they have gone up the roof above that shelf. Not sure if this could be wood rot or if it's 100% termites. No bodies or anything seemed to fall out when we tapped it, it's just as the photo?

Sometime in the last 2 months, after a bit of rain I did notice a whole bunch of termites flying around my house. But we did do a pest spray in April which he sprayed inside the roof a little bit as well, really can't remember if it was before or after the spray.

  • It does to my eyes. Worth getting checked out and maybe spray again.
    Sorry.

i think it is just wood rot

but you'd better raze the garage, just to be safe

do some cross cuts through some of the good wood to see what is happening further down

    • Perhaps, I might have let my paranoia take over.
Is the damage all below ground or does the damage extend significantly above ground?

      • It was just on a wooden plank that we were using as a shelf. Other planks/shelves are treated

        • Termites always come from the ground.
Assuming the termites were not already in the shelf when placed then there must be a termite path to the shelf.
Will not necessarily be easy to spot but it is the only way that they can get to and from the shelf.
(assuming it wasn't already damaged and nobody noticed)

          • @crunchyhead: Brick wall and concrete garage floor though, like apart from that shelf I see nothing else affected

            • @MeesusEff: Is there a chance that it is old damage?
From your description there doesn't appear to be any current termite activity at all.
And it still may be just wood rot… I'm not even close to an expert.

              • @crunchyhead: Ive uploaded photos of the surrounding area in the post, unless they squeezed in through the corner ceiling…and then left?

thought i would have at least seen one body around or something…

                • @MeesusEff: I'm not really experienced enough to know.
Is that brown track like mark in the corner anything?
There is a bit of discolouration on the beam above. Does poking the discoloured part of the beam reveal sturdy wood or does it give way?
Apart from that I see nothing.

      probably termites

It looks like termites to me because of the mud-like deposits (frass) on the wood. Call a professional.

  • +1

Is there frass? (Termite poo). Looks like there is from what I can see. Or borers?

  • It looks like termites to me

  • +6

    100% termites

  • Is it damp in your garage?

    • Wouldn't say so..

  • Def. a borer of some type - termites is the go

  • Sure does.

    Yes, this is Termite damage.
    Pest controller 30 year experience.
Don't disturb the area or mud tunnels further.
Did you view any live termites?

  • +1

Don't disturb further. pestie will either bait or inject. Termites will abandon area if disturbed and then baiting is not as easy and therefore the more expensive injection treatment is required if no further infestation sites can be found. Pestie will want to determine if there is current activity .

  • 100% termites
Who knows when they ate it though

OP you need to call a pro and check, too hard to check the termite damage from out side.
Its definitely termite, prepare for worst .

  • Yes, termites

  • Slightly related question…

Do termites make any noise while they are active? Say it is a very quiet night and your ear is about 1-2m away from where the termites are active. Would you be able to hear them?
