Has Anyone Moved Interstate Because of Winter Asthma in Sydney

Hi,

Just wanted to hear from experienced persons if anyone within their family or friends or someone they know of have moved to opposite weather locations because of their Asthma triggered by environmental conditions. For example, moving to Cairns or Darwin to avoid cold in all together.

My condition is triggered my cold air in winter, I've been living in south west of Sydney for couple of years and every winter it's bad. I've consulted with GPs and Specialist, their advice is warmer place may help me forget about the conditions but no one can say for sure. I know everyone is different and one solution will not fit all.

So just wanted to hear your experience if you have one.

Thank you :)

You'd be dodging extreme heat, cyclones and 99%+ humidity for a third to half the year by moving to Darwin/Cairns.

    • I'm not seeing a downside compared to living in Sydney?

When I read the title, I thought this was going to be a rant about woodheaters.

    • Just read this sitting in front of my wood heater on full blast with a cuppa tea.

I'd suggest going on a 2+ week holiday to the location first, to see if it alleviates your symptoms.

Only true masochists move to Cairns or Darwin - winter there is ok, but even in spring its so hot you don't want to go outside. And aircon is pretty much mandatory.

Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, or maybe Fremantle (if you don't mind the west coast) would be my picks for year-round pleasant places to live. Just remember to pack plenty of bogan repellent.

    • thanks qwijibo for advice, it will give me some idea to look for.

Fremantle is fairly cold in winter, it's just as south as Sydney is.

    • Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast

How about a happy medium of Brisbane?

Gotta say since having COVID the wood heat smoke that hovers low every morning really kills the lungs and this is in areas that have some of the freshest air.

    • Be thankful you dont live across from my neighbor. He has an inside dog and literally scoops up the turds and burns them in the fireplace and overnight he winds the fire right down to almost no flames and it just belches smoke like an old coal train.

I haven't moved interstate recently but growing up in Brisbane and then having to visit relatives in Sydney during winter was the bane of my childhood.

When I near retirement age years from now, my wife and I will likely move to Brisbane for a more moderate temperature as her health problems inevitably get worse.

    • thanks tallkid123! good to know this.

Considering your location, Brisbane temperature wise would be perfect for you.

  • I did it almost in reverse OP - I have always 'had asthma' since I was a kid, but growing up in the Newcastle area, it was at most an occasional irritation. Relocating to Canberra 10 years ago for work was a total reality check for the condition - have to take my medication consistently and frequently bust out the Ventolin in winter, and it's also the hayfever capital of Australia which doesn't help (and studies show people with asthma are more likely to suffer from allergic rhinitis too so you may be in a similar boat).

Every year feels worse to me and I am constantly thinking about moving, but agree with the other comments about maybe trying a winter holiday in one of the cities you're interested in to see how you're feeling health-wise. Depending on the nature of your work you might even be able to just work remotely and grab a cheap airbnb for a week or two as a bit of a working holiday which will feel a bit more natural than doing touristy stuff?

    • Thanks Dominus for sharing this. Now, I am thinking to try out Brisbane for couple of weeks when Asthma gets under control a bit.

My husband is from Melbourne and had quite bad asthma until we moved to Brisbane. We only lived there for a couple of years but since we moved back he hasn't needed to use ventolin at all. 18 years since we moved back.

    • Thank you chichi for sharing. Now I am convinced to try out Brisbane. Don't want to go to extremes temperature of Cairns or Darwin :)

      • Good luck
