Pffft. I only buy my Pirellis from mycar if they're 50% off. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/665952

I would go back there at 50% off simply because at 50% off the price is too good to ignore…BUT. My experience with the last promotion was not at all good. The tyres I ordered somehow weren't in stock when I arrived for my appointment, so I had to reschedule. No warning was given; I took time off work for the appointment so it was a major hassle. Then, I was told that they could fit tyres that were exactly the same but were just branded a bit differently. I said…uh, okay, and then researched these tyres. Turns out they were most definitely NOT the same, and they were much cheaper than the manufacturer-spec ones I'd ordered. They then argued with me about that. In the end I got the right tyres at the right price, but by Christ it took some doing.

    • +3

Thanks for the warning. will give them a miss.

    • +4

Even at 50% and with that kind of experience - hard PASS

      Thanks for letting us know.

    • +5

I had a very different experience - mine was all good.

I was chasing a set of tyres for my wife’s car. The ones I wanted were low on stock everywhere but the fellow I talked to chased around and found them. He was also knowledgeable - his comments accorded with reviews and forum comments (Tirerack.com in the US is useful for that)

They price-matched a better deal without fuss and did the job within the timeframe. I guess different branches have different opinions on service!

    • You agreed to swap out Pirelli's on half price for some no name brand tyres? Or different spec Pirellis?

      • Allegedly exactly the same Pirellis but with a slightly different code that signified only that they were Volvo OEM.

        • Got it, cheers. I bought some MO (Mercedes OEM) continental contisport contact 5 for my since-sold Audi, and they seemed basically the same as regular going version? I guess it might depend on which OEM they're made for…

    • +1

Completely different experience here. Everything went smoothly and they even emailed 6 months later with $100 off a service with them. Not leaving my regular mechanic but happy enough.

    • +1

Had a very positive experience the last few times I did a tyre change at mycar. Three different locations as well. Customer service was exceptional, staff were very knowledgeable and they kept me up to date over the phone when there was a delay.

    • +7

I had the same issues. Stay away.

During Black Friday Pirelli tyre deal. MyCar Preston gave me two tyres of the ones I ordered, and two more of a older, different model because "they didnt have any more stock" - without asking or telling me. Then tried to convince me it was the same despite different costs. I even picked a MyCar store 12km away because my local ones didn't have stock online on the website.

At first it seemed like a honest mistake. I was told they would call me shortly after for a resolution but no call ever came. I called them back up checking in what's the status, and but was told "no more stock (of the tyres I ordered) for 6 months". Then when I asked for my old tires back and a refund (which he initially agreed), suddenly he found some stock to arrive a week later. This happened over 2 weeks, and brought my car back there 3 times to finally resolve the issue and they were annoyed at me for asking to get what I paid for. At no point did I receive any apologies.

I would stay away from MyCar's "promotions".

      Negative Vote
Purpose: To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

        Oooof.

  • What’s a good Pirelli tyre for a hot hatchback? Any recommendations my ozfriends? 225/40/R18

    • +2

      Pirelli pzero.

    • I just got another four P Zero’s (225/35/R19) on my Golf GTI early last month.

If you are looking around, try Eagle Tyres in Sydney. I called to confirm they had what I wanted and I was told $1100 rather than $1240 as the price on the website was wrong.

    • +2

I was running PZero's on my '16 Golf R not too long ago and found them to wear like crazy. When new the grip was great, but after 10,000kms it suddenly disappeared. I've since gone to the Michelin PS4S and the difference a is night and day improvement.

    • GR Yaris?

  • +1

My tyre shop man says NO to Pirellis. Say's it's all talk and nothing else. You pay for the brand and little else.
He told me to get the Bridgestones or the Michelins instead.

    Any thoughts on that?

    • +1

Just go with the Pirelli pzero and you'll be happy with that.

For the price they can't be beat

      • Cheers @edrift & @slimdealin
        I have a VW Golf TDI 2.0 225/45R17
I was looking at the cheapest of all these options:
        Bridgestone TURANZA SERENITY PLUS (touring)
        Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE003 (Sports)
        Bridgestone Potenza S001
        Michelin Pilot Sport 4
        Michelin Primacy 4
        Bridgestone Ecopia H/L001

I suppose I'll add the PZeros onto this list now.
        Any thoughts?

        • Pilot sports and adrenalin are both getting updated. Any day now…

          • @FlipCrank: Thanks for that. I'm in no rush, so will buy 4 and replace 2 now, 2 later. It doesn't make sense to me to buy just 2, it works out to be waaay more exxy.

          • +1

@FlipCrank: Pilot Sport 5 is out already, size range seems to be smaller than the PS4 at the moment. Well, my size doesn't come in PS5 but does in PS4 at least.

        • +2

Serenity is a terrible tyre. I hated them on my Golf and I switch to the PZeros and they have been much better. Much less wheel spin on take off in the wet and much less under steer.

I haven’t tried much else so maybe there are better tyres out there. I hear the Pilotsports are way way better. But pricey.

          • +1

@Smol Cat: This is exactly what I hate. Even at low speeds, if I accelerate out of a corner, or out of a round about, in the wet, I hate understeer and slipping.

I will stay away from the Serenity and look at the other options, ta!

            • @Lord Ra: Yes, so much understeer out of roundabouts and slippage that it was becoming unsafe in the wet, and taking off from a stop on any sort of incline the wheels would spin if not applying the gentlest acceleration (although depending on the hill gradient, sometimes you can't be that gentle or the car will slip back). I would never get a Bridgestone tyre again after this bad experience, the tyres were only about 2 years old at that point. I was getting actually angry at the tyres and wanted them gone ASAP. Like what is the point of having tyres if they don't grip the road - even if they were the best deal of the century, something that doesn't do it's job is never a good deal.

PZeros performed noticeably better in the wet. I would expect PSs would be another step above.

              • @Smol Cat: Bridgestone TURANZA SERENITY PLUS is a stay away then.
I had the Bridgestone BT250s on the Mazda 3, they worked well for me. The Goodyear Endurance gave me the exact same thing that you were talking about in the wet. I will never get them again. Harder compound, longer lasting, but scary to drive.

My neighbour bought 4 x Austone (chinese ripoff) for $300 and he was thrilled with his 'bargain'. I was a bit dubious.

                • @Lord Ra: Yes I never buy hard wearing 'long life' tyres normally as they just sacrificed grip. You're trading economy for safety at that point. Preventing one single accident pays for a lifetime of quality tyres.

        • +1

If you have a diesel, do you really need the performance tyres? Are you a spirited driver? My previous car vw jetta had the serenity plus and were much quieter and better gripping than the previous pirreli p7's. Both lasted about the same, possibly the serenity+ lasted a little longer - both over 55 000kms.

Different cars will need different tyres to best suit their ability. Also depends on how and where you drive: city or country, fast or slow; hot and cold climates; snow, dirt, sealed roads and if it's a wet or dry environment. I wish you luck

          • @omblygombly: @omblygombly - nope, just a good allrounder.
Yes, spirited on occasion, when I'm alone 😊
Mostly city. Speed limit. NSW Climate, leave it indoors all the time. No snow. So maybe I'll get the PS5!

    • +5

Pfft you pay for the name because they've earned the name.

Michelin > Pirelli > Bridgestone in that order from those 3 brands.

My brother owns a Bridgestone store, can get them cheap as chips and still happy to pay the premium. I've fitted well in excess of 100,000 tyres before career change - not some random fan boy posting

    • +1

      At 50% it’s worth it

    • +1

I’m not a fan of Bridgestones after they got very noisy on a couple of different cars.

The last one was a Golf GTI. After about 20,000km the OE Bridgestones sounded like off-road tyres. The family said they could hear me coming half a kilometre away. I changed to Michelin PS3 (now superseded by the 4 & 5) and they were a huge difference.

I had a similar experience with the previous car too.

      • I had the Bridgestone BT250s on my Mazda 3.
        Got the Goodyear Endurance.
Much quieter, but really slippery in the wet.

        • really slippery in the wet

Hard compound. They wear well. Got a set on 70k/kms and still going strong.

          • @netjock: True, they're still going strong from 2017!

  • +1

Been waiting for another Pirelli promo….have had a set of 225/55/18 Scorpion All Seasons on the Forester, just about to hit 60,000kms on them, still a little bit left, but if the 33% off is genuine its time to get a new set.

    • Also looking for forester tyres, doesn’t show anything in stock

  • Mycar had the 50%off the last 2years in November so I'm hoping they have it again.

    • +1

I think it’s unlikely given the oil prices (you need loads of crude to make a tyre), so with that consideration 33% is pretty good for current conditions. I was considering it but I think my tyres can last a bit longer :p

  • +1

Is it just me or is my car far more expensive than most other tyre places? Even at 33% off it's still only around the usual I pay from other places? Yes including balancing and fitment etc etc

    • What size?

I find my car tyres are expensive too.
      235/45/18

      • have checked for a few different sizes (have had a few cars the last cpl yrs and also so has the wife) but a few are 215/70R16 , 225/45R17, 225/40R18 , 235/35R19 and now they don't do ute tyres (but at one point i believe they did?)

    • I find there is a very wide range of prices between tyre models, even within the same brand. And - just because one retailer is the cheapest on one model, doesn’t mean they have the best deal on all tyres.

I was looking at Kumho tyres recently and Tyroola was by far the cheapest on one model, but Tyresales were $50 a tyre cheaper on another model of Kumhos. They all do deals with the tyre makers to promote a particular tyre.

      • I get that but I've legit found nothing cheaper through my car I did a bunch of comparisons on a wide range and nothing was cheaper. If you look at the tyre sizes I mentioned they are different purpose tyre sizes so it's not like I didn't give it a good search

    • +2

      Yes for me comparing the P Zero, mycar $625 - 33% = $418.75 vs JAX $439.

Hardly a deal for me despite "33% off".

    • I noticed the same. 245/75/16LT All Terrain Plus were $405 at Mycar, versus $339 at Jax. Jax had 35% off Pirelli on Sunday and Monday, so that's where I went.

      • Yea they used to stock AT in 265/70/17 and were legit 40% above everyone else I looked at, they dont do that size anymore it seems… I can guess why 🤣

  • +1

Also check here for deals and overall decent pricing.
Just bought for our two vehicles and saved nearly $1000 overall. https://www.tyresales.com.au/

Just don't be in an urgent rush for them (as in you can wait 3 to 5 days for delivery to the shop)

  • I recently changed from Michelin Primacy to Pirelli Scorpion Verde A/S and am very happy… Obviously the new tyre experience is normally really good but the Road noise is much less with the pirellis compared to the michelins… You can get the Scorpions for about the same price after discount at other tyre shops if you call around a bit

  • -2

Meh Pirelli, F1 taught me not to trust them ;)

  • +3

Wasn't aware so many racing car drivers frequented OzBargain requiring high end tyres so they can pick up their missed deliveries at the Post Office 3 minutes away…..

    • +1

I can't believe you'd personally attack me like this

  • Anyone know the difference between these Pirelli's on the MyCar website?:
    - PIRELLI P ZERO PZ4 NEW 98Y (245/40 R19 98Y) $435 before discount https://www.mycar.com.au/tyres/pirelli/p-zero-pz4-new/245-40…
    - PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 98Y RFT (245/40 R19 98Y) $549 before discount https://www.mycar.com.au/tyres/pirelli/cinturato-p7/245-40R1…
    - PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 98Y RFT (245/40 R19 98Y) $619 before discount https://www.mycar.com.au/tyres/pirelli/cinturato-p7/245-40R1…

especially the 2nd and 3rd one, both the same but different pricing.

Seems like people prefer Michelin over Pirelli?

  • +2

As many have mentioned, the service ordeal with MyCar is a disaster but in last years Black Friday deal, I just waited until the deal was live then walked into BobJanes Tyre Mart and they matched the offer for 4 Pzero's for my Calais, tho reluctantly. My son also did the same, phoning his local Bob Jane in Perth and they matched it also. 4 good tyres and a truckload better service. They even threw in free nitrogen for my tyres which is worth around $30. After a lifetime using Bridgestone Potenzas, I switched because of the better price for the Pirellis and the fact my last potenzas were wearing badly after 22k and I aint no hoon!!

  • PZeros: 225/45R17
    $1076 - $355 = $721 for four ($180 each).

    • Tyroola:
      Dragon Sports = $141 each
PZeros RunFlat= $162 (but out of stock)
      PZeros XL = $203

No idea what the difference is between the XL and non-XL.

Any recommendations on what to get for a VW Golf for city use?

  • Is wheel alignment included? If not, how much they charge?

  • Our BMW 218 was stock fitted with pirelli pzeros and they are a fantastic tyre.
I had Bridgestone re002 on a ford I owned many years ago. Not sure if the car also makes a difference(I'm sure it does, but thought the rear wheel drive would have beaten the bmw) but the pzero is better than the Bridgestone from experiencing both of them.

    • RE002 and new PZeros are completely different tyres with like 20 years of development between them. Can't really compare it. Compare your PZero to PS4/PS5 (new and after 20,000 km).

      • Haven't tried a Michelin tyre yet. Once these wear down I might try the ps5

        • Use case is quite important. But PS4/PS5 will serve you well. Personally I'm a Hankook fan and am saddened that they didn't release an update to the V12 Evo2 as that easily beats RE005 and in my opinion is on par with RE050/Advan V105.

Currently run Hankook S1 Evo3 on my 2 series hatch, handles 170kW fine and is awesome for fuel economy considering the grip it provides.

Another thing to consider is how the tyre performance after 40-50% wear. I know Dunlops go hard and noisy (e.g. factory fitted to Mazda3 SP25).

  • +1

Might be worth comparing against 20% off at Tyroola. My P Zero PZ4s were much cheaper because there wasn't inflated RRPs as the starting base.

    • Pirelli Cinturato P1
      $157 at My Car
      $179.20 at Tyroola

At least the size for my car

    • Similar price for Dragon Sport.

  • Good deal. Apparently bad service so instead I got my local Bob Jane to price match. I went in to store and they did it without fuss. Unfortunately they were short staffed so it’s been booked for Friday; I was hoping to get new tyres today.

    • What tyres did you get mate? Dragon Sports? For a hatch or sedan?

Looking for tyre recommendations for a Golf, wondering if the Dragons will suffice for city and highway driving.

      • +1

Sedan. Ford G6. 245/40 R18. Yes, Dragon Sports.

  • I bought the scorpion all terrain tyres for my ute. I went in on the day and they ordered them in.
Fitting was today and everything seems fine. I saw the last tyre go and the spare put back.
While I was there I saw the coolant tank cap fall of another car while they were changing bays. They drove over it. I saw them drive over their torch. And as I was about to drive away I found a part with invoice in my ute. So I returned it.

    Didn't fill me with confidence.

Checked the tyre pressure and they were higher than car makers recommendation. Also I need to check the wheel nuts to see if they were tighten.

  • Their online system is broken, ordered and payed for the tyre's, called the tyre shop to confirm my booking they have no information about my order.

No customer service available on the weekend to sort out the order issues.

Next time I will deal directly with the tyre shop, their online system doesn't work.
