Not sure how good these are, appears to be a pretty low price so I thought I'd post it up.

Specs look pretty lit, and if anyone has one to confirm if these are sweet, then I'll probably grab one.

Please refrain from spider jokes as they are very spooky.

  • Will this impact the electricity bill ?

    • +2

      It uses electricity, so yes.

    • +1

The cost of devices that are always running is easy to calculate.

At Brisbane rates (26c/kWh fixed rate), every Watt of power consumption costs you $2.28/year in electricity charges.

The power adapter this comes with is rated "19V 3.42A", so 65W maximum power output. It probably draws about 2/3rds of that, so ~40W continuous consumption costs about $90 of electricity a year.

Judging by the 2nd last photo, it doesn't have much reach at all…1 to 2 rooms max? DIameter doesn't even look the biggest of the three pictured. 😜

Imagine having all the ports plugged in, wires going everywhere. Similar to that Allocacoc PowerCube thingy.

  • Just bought this for the office. Normally no signal between floors in a heavily concrete office. But works like a charm.
Also then meshed it with the 5400 and a plugged in device was getting our fibre 400/400 speeds

    Totally worth it.
Wondering how I can justify the $5xx for home.

Normally no signal. But works like a charm….. Then meshed it…

So what fixed the problem? The mesh unit or this?

      I'll lean mesh.

      • AI MESH is crap.

Unifi is better at better price.

  • Everyone a comedian here cmon enough with spider alien jokes..

    • +2

Looks like you need a (face)hug

  • Disconnect antennae and use as frisbee if you want

  • I'm waiting for the 16 antennae version. It'll surely be twice as good as the 8.

  • Vecna has diversified into routers now. Good for him.

    • They provide good range for the portals

  • Is this compatible with Optus NBN landline?

    • You'll need to he more specific on the type of connection. Incase you'd need additional equipment too.

  • what in the sweet taintchafing fkk is this

Surly the benefits must plato after a $250 router? Wouldn't mesh setup be better as well?

    • +7

      plateau = flat
      Plato = philosopher :)

It really depends on your home if a mesh is better. 99% of people are happy with the ISP supplied modem/router! Giant house, yeah you are going to have wifi problems. Normal house, one central router will be fine.

Im biased, Ive had the 88U happily covering my whole house and acting as an Ethernet switch as well for years. If you have a look you can see this router is a try and do everything unit with a good number of Ethernet ports which I find useful. Asus routers also let you build your own mesh out of their routers so thats nice.

      • +1

"plateau" haha that's the one I meant, not the Greek philosopher.

        Thanks for the advice

      • Doesn't have to be giant, can just be the layout (long) or the materials used that significantly impact things.

Bought a $500+ Asus router recently.

That $500 was worth the lack of arguments and people getting upset over buffering.

  • Imagine you accidently fall on it…

    • Emergency departments are quite stretched at the moment, avoid "falling" onto foreign objects.

  • A router and an spider art sculpture all rolled into one.

  • Surely this extends beyond what any end user would realistically need right? I see all these gaming focused routers and stuff like this but the mind boggles as to who is actually getting the full potential out of these.

I think this product has MU-MIMO, which If youre in a house full of power users then this would make sense. I haven't read the full product page, but if it also has BeamForming then that's another big up in relation to wifi-only households like my own.

If you live in an house/apartment with just you and your partner, or dog or maybe a family of 3-4 with younger kids, this might not be the right product for you. It all comes down to your needs in terms of internet usage etc etc.

I am looking at this as an option, as my house of 3 all stream 4k Netflix/YouTube and online game. We are also wifi only household as it's a rental and the modem point is in a dumb room. Cbf paying for a sparky to come out and install ethernet.

Hope that gives a little more insight

My household usually has my PC running and downloading and usually 2-3 streams at any given time plus 4 phones, two tablets and smart home appliances like lights and the rest and I am running off a basic netgear $80 modem/router. I just can't see anyone logically needing this model and its capabilities for a household. I get the features it has, but those features can be acquired at a much lower price point.

        • Sure I mean, I imagine there will be uses for this that exceed what you need.

I'm not really all that knowledgeable though, so probably not the dude to ask

        • Yeah you don't to spend $800 to get a router with MU-MIMO and Beam Forming.

There's also cases where that's detrimental too.

        • +1

Exact same thoughts going in my head - double storey house, router as I am typing shows 31 devices connected.
using linksys $80 router and have a Xiaomi extender $10 from memory for the odd farthest corner of the house just in case.
Surely, not a gamer here, but high streaming family of 4. Haven’t missed a beat with all of us working/ studying from home. Can’t even remember needing to restart my router other than the 2-3 times I changed providers in the last 4-5 years.
Cannot seem to comprehend the need for something this high end for home use, unless I just got lucky with my wifi/ router setup or I am missing something completely here.

          • +1

            @Dealking:

Cannot seem to comprehend the need for something this high end for home use

It sells for the same reason you occasionally see Maclaren/Porsche/Lamborghini cars driving around on city roads. Some people are rich, and don't care about the cost if it gives them a few percent improvement in performance. And it certainly helps the manufacturer's profit margin, it doesn't cost 5x as much to make as a simple $100 router.

As an electronics designer, I can also tell you that it's appearance is designed purely to look impressive to people who don't know how radio-frequency signals propagate. It would perform equally well if it was a bland square box, in fact it would probably work better as it could use natural convection cooling instead of needing a fan. Also, the antennas only need to be about 25mm long. Most routers have unnecessarily long antennas, if you take them apart you'll find they're plastic shells that are mostly empty.

    Product idea.

This router but with drone blades so it flys around to give the best coverage.

  • A nob question: should I upgrade to this if I already have a AC86U for a 3 storey house? Currently have a mesh network with the AC86U in the kitchen and AC68U on level 1.
There're about 30 devices connected in the household

    • +1

Do you have wireless coverage throughout? If yes…. answer is an empthatic no.

If you need a third mesh point… maybe you can get some benefit…. but it's a hell of a expense for very little gain.

      • Hi, thanks for your advise. Yes I do get good coverage but the only issues I have was ping spikes sometimes when I play games on ps5 or phone. I was wondering if the AX routers would help
But yea if it is not a lot of gain might not worth the expense

        • Can't wire the PS5 at all?

          • @scuderiarmani: Not ideal because of the location. I tried to switch the AC68U mesh network off, got better connection just the AC86U alone but coverage will not be as good in other rooms. A bit of dilemma I suppose. That's why I was wondering if getting this AX89X pair with AC86U would be much better or not

            • +1

@Kelvin0911: You'll find the more you add, especially when the mesh units aren't wired together, your bandwith between them will half too. So I'd expect if anything it may worsen your problem.

Gaming problems can be so many issues too, some of which outta your control anyway.

  • Seriously why does it need so many antenna? I don't get it.

  • This or Asus ROG Rapture tri-band WiFi Gaming Router GT-AX11000

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/163995244416?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • +2

ASUS' AX__E__11000 is their tri-band router. I'm anticipating 6GHz Wi-Fi (6E for the Extended band) routers for market in Au soon on account of the spectrum recently receiving regulatory approval, so I glean from my searches and wikipedia, and so, I'm not buying a router today.

  • +1

I used to have the AX88U and honestly I would not spend this much for an ASUS router.
Your best bet is to get a PFSense router (like Protectli Vault) and get an Ubiquiti AP (for this price point).
    Just my 2 cents.
