Hercules DJ Starter Kit $249.98 Delivered @ Costco Online (Membership required)

40

Hey OzB. Just spotted this on Costco. Don't know anything about DJing but there is a decent drop in price for this (usual online price $379.98). Hard to compare the price from other stores as not many places stock it. I found one place that had it cheaper but postage was $85 so it ended up being a lot more. Happy for people to say this is a rubbish deal as I really don't know if this is a good product or not.

Probably better off buying a pioneer rekordbox controller and use with whatever speaker you have currently. You will still need a laptop etc with either and if you want to take DJing seriously it's better to get used to the rekordbox ecosystem for when you play in nightclubs/bars etc

Something like this would be good for kids or teenagers wanting to start out or to play around with.
Would recommend something like the pioneer DDJ-400 as a good starter. Can even pick them up off FB marketplace.
    *been DJing for 20+ years.

    • Yeah, I had a quick look at the DDJ-400 and I don't think I would want to give that to a kid or teenager to muck around on.

      • +3

Why not? If they have a slight interest in it, get something that is usable rather than a toy that makes everything difficult. They'll be more likely to stick at it if they enjoy it. Just because they're younger doesn't mean they're going to break everything they touch.

        • +2

          Yep.
Also a DDJ400 will hold its resale value if they decide it’s not for them.

        • Depends on the kid I guess. I would be more comfortable with something a little cheaper at first. If they stick to it then I'd move up.

          • +1

@ozbs25: Even the DDJ200 and a half decent set of headphones would be a better option IMO. I'm sure there's some speakers in the house they can use for it?
As said above, Pioneer gear will hold it's value much better, they always have. I got a DDJSX when they first came out 10 years ago. Sold it probably 3 years ago for about half of what I paid. If they don't like it, you sell it and recoup a lot of the cost. If they do like it, it will last longer until they move up. There's always buying second hand to get them started as well I guess.

@whitelie: I don't buy second hand and I don't sell stuff either so a lot of your points are kinda lost on me. For others, awesome.

Our kid isn't anywhere near using any of this kind of stuff. I thought there could be a few people out there that could be interested in something like this. I posted this for them.

Maybe once the time comes where our guy may want to try this stuff out maybe I'll look at some of the Pioneer stuff. I keep seeing it mentioned all the time. Maybe if he's terrible at looking after stuff, I'll look at getting something like this to start him off. I did also think the Pioneer one people were recommending seemed a little overwhelming for a beginner, especially if it was for a kid. In any case, before buying something I can ask a mate who is really into this stuff, or ask on here.

                @ozbs25:

I don't buy second hand and I don't sell stuff either

Way off topic, but that's a really weird pair of life rules 🤷🏼‍♂️

                • @Nom: I'm not really comfortable buying used stuff. I'd rather have new things. I don't need to sell stuff as I don't need the money. If I want to get rid of something I sometimes give it away or donate, throw it away or whatever.

Edit: With regard to selling I guess it's not necessarily about the money. I just don't think the money is worth the hassle of having to deal with people and the problems that sometimes come about when selling things.

                  • +1

@ozbs25: So you’d be more comfortable buying something cheaper, but it’s also not about the money? All that’s being suggested is there are better options available, both cost and quality-wise.
You sound unnecessarily combative here. It’s ok that people are able to give advice suggesting this isn’t a good buy, it’s not reflective of you.

(fwiw I currently mix on CDJ3000 and a 750mkII, I know what I’m talking about here)

                    • @MIKEPICKARD: I said right from the start that it's ok to say this is not a good deal. It's right there in the original post.

A few people were suggesting to get the Pioneer stuff because you can get it second hand and can sell it later. I'm just saying I'm not comfortable doing either of those things so the point they were making doesn't really suit me and thus possibly some others. For people like me, it would be better to just get something a little cheaper then move up if we find we really enjoy the hobby or whatever.

Not everyone has a set of speakers that they can hook up with a Phillips DDJ200 that others are suggesting to get for the same price as this. This set could be better for those people.

I'm sure everyone in this post knows more than me about this stuff. Again, it's right there in the original post.

    • +1

Yep, has actual sized jog wheel etc

  • +1

Seriously would not bother with this. Minimal functions, low end spec everywhere you look.
Grab a Pioneer DDJ200 for about the same price instead.

  • Hercules makes good stuff that supports Serato. It's good for a year or two until you give up your dreams of being a DJ, or move up to Pioneer. I gave my Hercules to my brother four years ago, and now he has a Pioneer controller and DJs in a local club on the weekend.

That being said, the controller alone is $150 so if you have speakers already, get it separately, or the Pioneer DDJ200 for $200.

    Don't know anything about DJing

Don’t worry, neither do most DJ’s…
