Cost to run 2200w Arlec Ceramic Tower Heater CEH241

I am interested to know a very rough estimate of how many $ per hour it would cost to run this heater? I have no idea what power company the persons property we stay at is using. Would the cost change much if the temperature is set at 19 degrees versus 30 degrees? Also would the cost change much if the heater is running on low at 1200w? I bought the heater new at Bunnings a few weeks ago. Are new heaters more efficient than older units running at the same wattage?

We pay 25c per kWh. So about maybe 60c an hour if we ran a 2200w heater flat out.

To get a better estimate you could buy a kw measuring device from Bunnings and see how much electricity the heater uses when you are heating different areas with different internal and external temperatures.

Unless it is an air-conditioner it doesn't matter if you use a new heater from a maximum energy use perspective. A thermostat and timer can turn the heater off which can reduce total power use.

As people usually mention you don't even need to use a heater from an electricity use perspective. if you run a high power draw GPU it heats just as well as an electric heater of the same wattage.

    Don't worry, be happy.

Seriously, a lot of people have people with covid-19 or the flu at the moment. Using air conditioning to keep a room warm is an absolute "NO" from a health perspective. You need to get fresh airflow.

It's literally your rate per kwh and then times that by 2.2

    • Really, I was using reverse cycle air conditioning unit I bought the ceramic heater. We do have some ventilation in our caravan.

To be a bit more accurate, given that OP has compared 1200w and 2200w usage, you would want to use - Unit price per KWh x (Wattage/1000)

  • When running on the hightest setting the cost would be (2200 * CPH)/1000 where CPH is charge the power retailer is charging you per hour for when you have it on.

At 19degrees once the heater gets to the temp it should power off until it gets below some temperature and during this time the heater will not be using any power (okay a few milliamps to run the LED's, so a few cents per hour).

I set my oil column heater to run on the lowest wattage setting with the fan on and set the temp so it is cool (some where around 20degrees).

It depends how good your room insulation gets. I have a different brand but new ceramic heater, it stays on on low setting (1.2kW) to keep room at 20C on cold night (< 5C outside), but turns off occasionally if i set it to 19C. So unless i turn up the setting i wont keep room at 30 C. Therefore you will definitely pay more at higher temp preset, but how long it blast at full 2.2kW depends how insulated and how small your room is.

Are new heaters more efficient than older units running at the same wattage?

    Not between two ceramic heaters.

Efficiency comparison depends on the effect - warming you only with radiant heater is more energy efficient than oil heater which warms the room as well. However if you want the room to stay warm after its off, radiant and ceramic heaters aren’t that good. Reverse cycle is most efficient

  • No matter what heater you're buying, whether it's a coil, ceramic, or other electric heater, they all have an efficiency of 100%. They're all resistive heaters and it's impossible for one to less efficient than another, assuming the stated wattage figures are true. Only heat pumps (air conditioners) achieve more than 100% efficiency.

Now there is a difference in how quickly a heater will heat up (oil heaters are slow, radiant heaters make you feel the heat faster), but ultimately when it comes to putting energy into your room they're all the same.

You can buy one of these and it will tell you. Some reviews say the accuracy might not be great though.
