Car Rental in Queenstown (New Zealand)

Hi there, we will be going to Queenstown end of July (post School holidays) and looking for car hire for two families (3 people in each family). We will be together all the time.

Looking for suggestions if we should hire one car to accommodate both families, if yes which type of car to hire or should we get separate cars? Which option would be economical and efficient?

Also what are the cheapest car rentals options available?

We would be staying for 6 nights and also visiting Milford.

Thanks in advance!

Nothing you can't figure out yourself but here you go:

We have used Omega twice with no problems, last time got a Toyota Tarago for 6 of us.

If you have fair bit of luggage, get a kia carnival but it might be cheaper to get 2 small cars.

Went with a group of friends, you'll want a SUV not a sedan as the roads aren't as good and the drives can be quite long and tedious so no point having two vehicles (double the drivers as you'll want to rotate primary drivers anyways).

I think most rentals will have the usual medium SUVs, get something comfortable and fuel efficient.

    • I did this drive in a beat up old Yaris. Not even sure how the rental hire company sourced it, it was probably the grads car or something.
      Yaris did just find.
Except the battery died in Te Anau and needed to be replaced.

Keep in mind roads are very windy - I'd feel sorry for the 1 or 2 people in the 3rd row of an SUV. Especially travelling with 2 sets of kids.

I'd personally go with 2 separate cars for flexibility & storage cargo. Just in case 1 needs to split the kids from adults, or go shops without waiting for the car to get back home. Pay for the extra car so both families can actually enjoy the holiday, instead of fighting over who gets the front seat / last row / rushing around to tag team 1 car.

My go to in Syd/Melb has been Ace Rentals (AU), so decided to try their NZ one - pretty affordable compared to the big names of Hertz etc (but they're not a 1-star no-name either). You can book online and set your travel dates prior to leaving, so you don't pay stupidly "on the day".

Also make sure you take motion sickness tablets - a whole day of fun plans can be ruined by 30mins of windy roads (personal experience).

I've gone with Apex. I've used them in Aus, never had an issue. I'd also go two cars.

We got similar plans and booked Toyota Rav4 4w.d. via Apex.

  • Thank you so much all, very helpful suggestions. 🙏🏽
