Must I Return Drivers Licence Back to Vicroads during Suspension

Hi all, hope someone who has gone through licence suspension process in VIC can help out with some questions I have. I have been suspended 3 months for driving 25k over the speed limit, anyway I paid the fine and am just sitting at home.

Now Vicroads wants me to mail back my drivers licence to them, my question is if I do that then after 3 months when I want to get my licence back do I have to go to Vicroads to fill in a whole bunch of application forms or complete any sort of tests?

My current licence expires in 2027, will I have to pay for another 10 year licence term when I get it back?

Edit: Thanks for all your comments, I've finally spoken with Vicroads after the general number hung up on me twice, Vicroads will mail the licence back to me when the suspension ends and the existing licence expiry remains, so no extra costs involved (main reason I'm posting this on OzBargain)

Vicroads wants me to mail back my drivers licence to them…

    Just do it.
Your other questions can be sorted out later.

Ring the number on the back of your licence and ask them directly

Why not call or email VicRoads? They'll also be able to answer follow up questions if you had any.

You've got time to find out too.

    25k over the speed limit

      WTF dude?

"What did VicRoads say when you asked them??"

They said "Ask OzBargain first, and whatever they suggest, we are good with that…"

I had mine suspended a few years back for 1 month but I still suggest calling in case it is different now

I sent mine back, and from memory they mailed it back to me

I was away overseas for most of that 1 month anyway so didn't really hurt me and could use other ID if needed

    • Do you now have insurance? and how does your previous suspension affect the premium?

      • Either no one wants to insure you or it's super expensive

      • Was (and still am) with RACV

No change to insurance premium but if I did need to make a claim there was an additional excess. That dropped off after about 3 years of being on the policy.

    • I was away overseas for most of that 1 month anyway so didn't really hurt me and could use other ID if needed

A good point, OP may want to look at getting a second form of photo ID if they don't already have one for the 3 months ahead. As it will be easier to get while you still have this one.

I have not lost my licence before, seems very impractical to hand back one's licence.

You still need it as ID.

Its not like you can flash your licence to a policeman and say look its valid.

    • My understanding is that if you lose your license then you need to return it as it is no longer valid for the primary purpose.

For secondary purposes, such as for identification, you would need to find an alternate.

    • You still need it as ID.

I believe all states have a proof of age ID card for people that don't have a licence for ID… Like:

      https://service.vic.gov.au/find-services/personal/apply-for-…

Fair observation but a 5 week waiting time? That's over a third of the suspension period.

You can still use the licence as an ID for +18 venues.

Tell the gov to come and collect it if they want it back.

    • What happened to John McAfee when he said that about the IRS?

      • John McAfee, legend.

        RIP.

        • He told the government to come get him and they did.

          He was another cryptocurrency grifter

Imagine asking the question after VicRoads has already answered this for you.
As for any other questions, I mean, wouldn't it be best to ask VicRoads directly?

    Crazy idea I know…

  • Yes, you must return your license card within 14 days of the suspension period commencing.

my question is if I do that then after 3 months when I want to get my licence back do I have to go to Vicroads to fill in a whole bunch of application forms or complete any sort of tests?

    Why does that matter?

Idk you're asking as if you have any right to disagree or refuse to do it

my main concern was whether or not I have to pay for a new 10 year licence term when I still have 5 years till expiry on my current one….if I did, then could possibly send in a statutory declaration stating that it was lost, and 3 months later a kind samaritan found it in a park and mailed it back to me

      • You're happy to lie on a stat dec and want us to support you in doing that?

        • I mean they were stupid enough to lose their license, sounds like they'd make other bad life decisions, including probably losing their license again in the future.

      • When in doubt, do nothing.

Sit on one's hand and wait for three months.

      • Didn't you update your OP earlier than this reply? Isn't the matter resolved? Why are you coming up with random scenarios that aren't relevant?

        • yes to clarify I will definitely mail it back to Vicroads….just wanted to brainstorm ideas on the hypothetical scenario that if Vicroads wants me to pay for a new licence term when the suspension ends, I thought this would be a good place to discuss this because there is 5 more years till my licence expires (approx $140 in licence fees), but just want to see what people on Ozbargain would do?

          • +3

@runforthedeals: If you hypotheticals, go back to "what would have happened if I hadn't exceeded the speed limit that day"

            • @GG57: Of course! that's the first thing everyone thinks of the moment they receive a fine, unfortunately it did happen, one of the most practical idea I received is to buy a slow car

              • +1

@runforthedeals: There's always the option of exercising some restraint with the throttle?

                • @Gronk: tried it, works well on the wife's Mazda, not on a Gla, strange they're both 4 cylinder cars, must be the red brake calipers

                  • +1

@runforthedeals: You should not get your licence back if you were this incompetent, just own up you like to drive fast and got caught

                  • @runforthedeals: Repaint them, or better yet - grow up!

  • Now Vicroads wants me to mail back my drivers licence to them, my question is if I do that then after 3 months when I want to get my licence back do I have to go to Vicroads to fill in a whole bunch of application forms or complete any sort of tests?

No. They will just mail you a new license with probably a new expiry, if you are on your Ps you might have your P license period extended. That is what happened to me.

  • i dont understand how this is a 'thing'

like vicroads then has to have the resources to store all this shit then return it… you could very well say you returned it and it got "lost in the mail"

and you're without a means to photo ID yourself???

being in nsw i always hear about this kind of thing from vic or qld and the first thing i think is that… yeah glad i'm in nsw because i cant wrap my head around this kind of bullshit that comes from "lesser" states (I kid I kid… or may I'm not.. IDGAF)

    • and you're without a means to photo ID yourself???

All states have a "proof of age" ID card you can get:
      https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-nsw-photo-c…

    • The gov just fined the driver $100s of dollars. They then take the ID back and charge another fee for a new ID.

      It's a perfect revenue 🤖.

      • +1

        It's not cheap to be a law-breaker :(

        • The gov also produces waste by shipping and disposing of the ID.

          • @rektrading: At least with them being posted back they're likely to be shredded and recycled :)

      • +2

If only there was a way to avoid all of this hassle and cost.

        • All I 👂 is the bad thing about the Vic gov.

$TWTR is full of 🐦/ vids about how much the Vic Premier blows.

          • @rektrading: Politics plays no part in this story from OP

            • -2

@GG57: I see it as a waste of resources.

              Shipping
              Plastic
              Human resources

              Bad policy by boomers.

          • +2

@rektrading: $TWTR is correct. Nevertheless, I'm not sure how it applies to this discussion.

  • there's a giant logical fallacy that i'm surprised no one has touched on

if a person with a cancelled license is pulled over and he hands over his license then the cop goes back to his car and he looks the guy up and BAM…

and so why are you taking it off him? ask yourself why other states do not do this???

    • I'm assuming it's to inconvenience people who are caught hooning

  • Its NOT your licence, it's the states confirmation you passed the test. It doesn't belong to you.
    Do as they ask.

  • What would happen if you don’t post it back and just resume driving when the suspension is over? I never seen this in NSW
