Best Way to Heat Large Balcony

Hey guys I'm wanting to heat up my balcony. We have a L shape outdoor sofa. Seats and 8-10 guests. Want to keep them toasty when they come over on the weekend.

What's the best way? Ease of use? Ease of storage? Practical? 'm leaning towards outdoor gas heaters but not sure where to buy and whether or not it's leftover to lug around a big gas bottle etc.

Any tips please? Prefer not electrical as the only power port is on other side of Balcony (although now that I think about it, the power port is directly in a straight line from where the heater would be so I guess electrical isn't ruled out.

It's a covered balcony. About 4 floors up.

Thanks a lot. Need it for dinner party this weekend.

Thanks a lot

If you can accommodate and fuel a wood fired solution I've found these oil drum fires are the most effective outside fires I've ever used.

They make an incredible amount of heat and burn all night long - you'll be amazed.

We're in a rural setting here so fits our space - they throw out a lot of heat so you need a reasonably sized area to use one, flues can be added to make this less of an issue (slow the burn, reducing heat but increasing smoke - flue needed). Many use these to heat large houses.

Check youtube to see them in action.

    • Aren't wood fires kinda toxic? Sitting next to a wood fire is meant to be like sitting next to an idling truck. So long as he's hauling wood up onto his balcony, might as well consider hauling gas canisters instead. Or some kind of power hungry electric heater that can hold and radiate heat through thick stone or something.

    • That sounds very dangerous in a large apartment building. Embers and sparks can fly. They could fly to a neighbours apartment, touch a curtain and burn the entire building down.

One way of getting to know all the people who live above you in your complex…

  • 4 floor up are you in an apartment?
u might have to check strata rules they might limit what you can have, i know bbq with coals is banned in my parents apartment balcony's so you might not be able to use the wood fire ones

electric blanket under the seats to keep everyone warm?

    • Certainly cheaper to run.

  • You need to check what types of heaters are allowed in your building. It's unlikely any gas or open-fire heaters will be allowed (I would be alarmed if I saw my neighbours lighting these on their balcony).

If your balcony is covered (presumably enclosed), can't you use one of those fan heaters to circulate heat around?

Heating your outdoor balcony? In 2022 most would agree that it can’t be too good for the planet…

Hot water bottles for all :)

    • Or put on more clothes and good ol' blanket

  • If electrical is not ruled out, maybe a radiant halogen heater - doesn't heat the air, just the people in range:

  • Electric heated throw blanket.
