Which 2nd Hand Router to Buy for 1000/50 Speeds?

Looking to grab a router pre-owned off market place or gumtree (unless there are some interesting suggestions below) but not sure what router I should be looking for that will be good enough for 1000/50 speeds.

ABB suggest google nest wifi but I have used that in the past and wasn't a big fan nor will be using wifi.

  • Why not use the wifi? The newer wifi standards are quite fast and compliment gigabit internet rather well.

    • Now have ethernet available in bedrooms so

Should have wrote wont be using wifi often*

If Wired for the main stuff, I grabbed a Telstra Smart Modem Gen2 and wireless was just phones and tv etc.

If you're gonna cough up top dollar per mth for 1000/50, get a Solid Wifi6 router, don't cheap out on it if you're going to primarily do wireless connectivity cause you'll prob drop in to the 800's with most over wireless.. also check your device has wifi6 reciever too.

    • Someone has an Nighthawk® X6 Tri-Band (rx8000) for $100 lmao that looks like $300 off new?

It's Wifi5 and prob would end up maybe better range but not by much to a simple Telstra Smart Modem Gen2. Also if you're expecting 1000 type speeds on wifi it's prob not realistic unless your on 5ghz and no interupts (ie. walls).

You'll get some better range and speeds over a mesh but more latency for each hop..

Doesn't make sense to cheap out on the key part here if your going to drop big bucks on a 1000/50 plan is main point here. Wifi6 or bust.

        • Appreciate the feedback.

          Which router would you suggest?

@AydenFX: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 for like $50 if your main stuff is going to be wired up ethernet. Wifi wise, don't expect to get 1000 speeds but it's capable still.

If you want more speed over Wireless and more devices etc. anything Wifi6 will be better. Mesh ones are exy if your working with a large space. I'd suggest any of the ASUS Wifi6 ones so you can mesh another later if you need more range or signal etc. vs the Mesh upfront.

Basically saying if you go cheap, go the T-SMG2 for $50 and see how it goes, that's your low cost option. Then failing that you can prob resell it for same as what you bought it for and get a better Wifi6 solution.

            • @xdivino: Again, thanks for your advice.

There is a ASUS RT-AX55 on amazon for $146 which is wifi 6 + supports mesb. Might opt for that seeing as there isn't too asus wifi 6 ones going around local.

              • @AydenFX: I have an RT-AC86U, which I stupidly bought thinking it was wifi6 and it's only wifi5. End result is I still get over 500mbps on my desktop so I'm not too fussed about it.

Plus it seems to work well with a lot of devices, and since there's a lot of devices in the house it's probably better than a wifi6 router that fit in my budget anyway.

  • I agree with xdivino, I'm using the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 on my ABB 1000/50, and have seen 973Mbps download through it.

    • You're pulling 973 over wifi? Im surprised the gen 2 isnt locked to telstra. Lots for $25 - $50.

      • I've had to run a network cable to the computer to get that speed. Modem isn't locked to Telstra, and the firmware can be modified to open up all the settings that Telstra locks out. WIFI speed is average at best

        • Whats your wifi speed looking like?

          • @AydenFX: Modem sits roughly in the middle of a single story 4 bedroom house. On WIFI, 5 metres from the modem, I get 488 down and 44 up, but at the far end of the house, through 3 brick walls, it drops to 141 down and 33 up.

@AB100: I bought my Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 on Gumtree for about $40. It was brand new, in a sealed box. Most gigabit routers are only good for 900 to 950 download speeds, so the Telstra is punching above its weight getting 973. At some point I will upgrade to a 6E mesh network, when they become readily available.

        • and the firmware can be modified to open up all the settings that Telstra locks out.

Only specifically on the Technicolour version.

      • VOIP is locked otherwise it's easy to get it working with other RSP's.

  • Nighthawk. I purchased one from gumtree for $180 down from $450

  • as others have said. Get a Telstra modem. You can root them that will allow you to use the VoIP with other providers.
