TradeMe.co.nz

Hi guys,

I have accidentally stumbled upon trademe.co.nz, and I was wondering if anyone had actually used it before? I am wondering if it's worth paying the 10NZD(?) so I can ask questions to a seller (I only really want to know how much shipping is to Australia since no-one seems to list it!).

Is it worth the trouble or should I try other aussie based sites (any suggestions besides ebay and gumtree)?

Thanks.

  • Its the NZ equivalent of eBay. For some strange reason eBay never took off in NZ. I have no idea why

I think that's one example where one got into the market early, adapted well with the targeted market, generated enough momentum and able to persist — it can out run the international competitor who has more money and resources.

Unfortunately we don't see one happening here in Australia so we are pretty stuck :(

  • Give quicksales.com.au a go

  • Yeah, trademe is good, like a NZ ebay. I actually prefer it to ebay though.

I'm not sure what the NZ$10 is for… it's free to be a member isn't it? Unless things have changed.

Its free to join but to ask questions or bid, you need to be authenticated. The only way to be authenticated is to deposit NZ$10, which goes to your account as credit to pay fees.

Didn't mind trademe either. When I was using TradeMe auctions were more prevalent to starting with a low and having a reserve rather than having your starting price as your reserve, which I hate.

  • For those who have used trademe, what's the safest and cheapest option to send money if they only accept cash and bank deposit? Don't banks charge a fortune for international money transfers?

Also if they only accept cash and bank deposit, I am a bit concerned about the security of the transaction, in case what you get isn't what you expect. There's no way to get your money back or be protected for it is there?

    • You should be able to use paypal to transfer NZ$ to the other user (if they have it too). As for protection, I don't think so. Nothing other than the willingness of the seller to help you out.

  • I have tried to sell on tradme.co.nz as NZ is a lost market if you sell on eBay but they say that you have to have a NZ bank account and accept money in NZ dollars. Does anyone know how you would go about getting this sorted? Maybe an ANZ account in Australia? Then how do I get the NZ dollars out to an OZ account with the minimum transfer fees etc?

  • I bought a uni text book off trademe.co.nz

seller wanted cash which was cool. as bank transfers are a pain in the donkey.

A kiwi woman at work had some kiwi pesos which I swapped for some glass beads.

I sent the cash via registered post to the seller.

received my book a few days later.

    no problemo.

    • Did you really send cash in registered post?? How much did it cost to do that?

      • couple of bucks. the cost of the book (about $30) and the price of postage ($7) was a absolute bargain considering what the textbook cost new.

the seller had to sign for the cash being delivered.

        • Oh ok. What I've been thinking of buying is going to cost at least $200 AUD, so not sure that is a great idea.

But for about 30 bucks that is a fantastic idea!!! I never would have thought of doing that.

        • try these companies for international transfers-

          http://www.xe.com/xetrade/

          or
          Ozforex

          fees of about $15.

RE: sending cash by registered post - if the seller has good feedback and he is marked as the signer for the registered post then it should be reasonably safe. personally I would do it. but it's your call.

        • Wow that is expensive :( I can see why mailing money was more appealing.

So you would do it for $200+ altomic? What if it got lost in the mail?

        • i'd do it. send it registered. but I'd have to consider the cost of insurance for $200. but still I'd do it.

  • I've bought some rare magazines from trademe. Most of those people are probably on ebay too. The seller I purchased from also accepted Paypal (because they had to pay for the things THEY bought on ebay).

  • I seem to recall being able to use the 10 bucks to pay for an auction i'd won, but this would have been nearly 6 years ago. Does Trademe still do something like that? 'Cos then you could pay it in to trademe and have them look ater the funds transfer to the seller… that's if its still how it works…

  • I don't recall forking out $10 to join trademe or do any of that stuff.

    • It wasn't to join trademe per se, but rather more around added guarantee around user authenticity.
E.g. their address verification process actually had them send a letter to the primary postal address set against your account. It contained a code that you had to enter in to a section in trademe once you'd logged in.

It was implemented around early/mid-2000s I think. Dunno if its still in place as I haven't logged in to trademe in literally years.

    • Trademe is free to join, but for the privelege of asking questions to sellers (to reduce the spam problem), they charge 10NZD to become 'authenticated', and you can use it towards sellers fees or something, but not buying costs. Yeah they still have that address verification thing as well.

I think ebay is becoming a bit too commercialised, so that is why I liked the look of trademe when I first saw it a few days ago. I am so cheap - I have been dilly dallying over a membership fee :( and the payment/seller security is just causing me a bit of concern because I don't want to throw away hundreds of dollars on nothing. That is the one thing ebay has done well with paypal.

  • I never paid the fee, so either the person I bought from must have had their email address in the listing, or, you can contact them once you place a bid.

Maybe someone here has paid the fee and would send any questions you have on your behalf?
