  • Hows Air Canada flights? Any reviews?

    • +1

Canadian mate calls it air crapper. Standard north American airline.

    • +3

Totally fine, not Emirates or SQ but does the job well.

    • -4

Have flown with them on two occassions. Standard modern airline. No included meals etc but satisfactory experience.
Think airlines along the lines of low cost Aussies like Virgin Australia, Jetstar

      • +2

No included meals in a 20 hour flight?

        • +1

There is definetely included meals. It is also not the same tier as virgin and jetstar. Maybe this person is thinking of Westjet but even that will have meals on it so don't know what tensionday is talking about

          • +4

@Lukal: They must be referring to domestic short flights maybe? Only thing I can think of. No way an airline would do no included meals on a long haul flight.

            • +1

@ONEMariachi: Yeah AirCanada don't do included meals on their flights within North America. I have also had some crappy experiences with broken seats/IFE with their North American flights. Nothing to single them out over to hate on them but I place them a little below Virgin Australia in their quality of service and hardware. Much prefer WestJet when travelling in the great white north.

    • Last time I looked Air Canada had slightly narrower seats and pitch than, say, United or Qantas. However it will depend on which aircraft they fly

    • +1

Put it this way. I'll never fly with them again. Steve Hofstetter has the same sentiments.
Their customer service is absolutely garbage and they actually overcharge Australian customers by selling them an airfare with included baggage, then charge for baggage inside the USA/Canada at time of check-in because of "American/Canadian laws", even when the ticket clearly shows baggage included.

People love crapping on North American airlines. I've never had a problem with United and will always fly them. Same with South West (domestic USA). I'll also avoid Delta.

      • Likewise never had a problem with United, in fact found them extremely helpful and flexible the one time I had a little scheduling snafu with regard to catching a connecting flight, although I have probably flown them the least of the North American airlines.

Also had only great experiences with South West, and I think I seem to be the only passenger of Delta Airlines who has never had any trouble with them. Have flown Delta more than any other North American airline and have only ever had great experiences. I have status with them so maybe that goes some way to explaining it.

        • I didn't have a problem with Delta per se, just that it felt like I was flying in a plane from the 80s with seats to match. They desperately needed to overhaul the interior.

        • +1

Interesting, I just had a terrible experience with United and a connecting flight, booked on the same ticket. The layover was 35mins at Houston and they delayed leaving by 30mins because they ‘oversold’ the flight (which actually meant the flight was too heavy, not that there were too many people). They waited until 2 volunteers came up but almost everyone had connecting flights. So that took ages, and then we got on the plane and they decided those people could get back on. I know this isn’t isolated to United (every airline pulls this shit), but they could have at least told me whether the other flight would wait for me or not so I didn’t have to sprint.

On the plane they said they’d try to hold the flight but never got confirmation, so I had to sprint through the airport and get the train and sprint to my gate, made it with 1min to spare. Won’t fly United again.

          • @Benno007: Yeah United always had a bad reputation for such things and was one of the main reasons I avoid(ed) flying with them. I was dreading dealing with them when I had a scheduling problem come up but was blown away how helpful the rep at LAX was in getting me not only onto an earlier flight but a direct one where I was flying via a second airport on my original ticket.

As to your case I never book any ticket with a connection under 1hr inside the US, too many delays with all carriers really.

            • @wavesgreen: Second to your good experience, when I was flying SF to EWR, there was a delay due to snow storms on the east coast. The entire SF airport was a nightmare and my 8:30am flight was cancelled, didn't fly until 11:30pm.

Not their fault of course, but they were very professional handling everyone, and all their constant booking changes. I ended up getting about US$60 in vouchers to spend at the airport for the day, and I changed my flights several times which to my own detriment lead to baggage problems at the other end when I eventually flew.

They managed to get my missing bags to me in NJ very quickly (they went to DC).

I really can't complain about them, and I love the 787.

      • I've never had a problem with United and will always fly them

Same. Mix of economy/coach and business/Polaris class flights - domestic and international - and I could not fault them.

On time push-backs and arrivals. Professional on the ground and in the air. Good value for money.

    • I am from Canada and it is one of the airlines companies that I avoid.

  • I have a friend who wants to go home to Canada. I can see some direct flights going via Vancouver first with Air Canada, but if I specify Sydney or Melbourne to Vancouver on the same date it doesn't list Air Canada option. Why is that?

    • Hi - direct flights to Vancouver with Air Canada are there, but more expensive.

Eg: Melbourne to Vancouver on Air Canada is $1499
      https://iwantthatflight.com.au/x2MELYVR-Flights-from-Melbour…

while flights to New York (via Vancouver) are $1339. Airlines often do this.

      • +2

Very true that airlines do this. They charge what the market will bear, not what it “costs”.

Also note that if you buy a cheaper ticket to NY and don’t take the Vancouver - NY leg, the airline will usually cancel your remain flights because you have done a “no show”.

        • Not taking the Vancouver - NY leg,
is suitable when you don't have check-in luggage.

          • +1

@whyisave: Do that too many times and airlines will ban you, especially in USA and Canada, where hub and spoke is the norm for flights.

  • Hi Op, cant wait to see japan sales, hope to see more airlines or flight options in june

    • +5

Don't you have to be on one of those very rigid, tightly controlled group package tours to get into Japan at the moment? Doesn't sound like much fun… I'll be waiting until next year at the earliest, I think.

      • yeah what's the point going to Japan now..

      • Ah no i meant see more flights in june to fly in nov/dec this year, atm most airlines show limited days only, and charge dearly

  • Any business class fares towards end of the year to either NYC or Canada for a week

  • +1

Wow, so cheap! I assume all the flights from Melbourne will be via Vancouver? Is there any way if extending the layover to a couple of days?

  • Does USA accept surprised RAT tests? Anyone done it & worked?

    • Was there last week. Supervised RAT was fine

      • +1

Thanks for clarifying that she was asking about supervised rather than surprised RAT tests. :)

Assume you did it at a pharmacy? Do they perform the test for you? Or do they just watch you do it?

        • +1

They just watched, then gave me a document when I was negative. Which was just their own certificate. Showed it to qantas at check in and that was that. Nothing stateside.

          • @Miso: @miso @juzz

Thanks. What cities did you visit, and how was the vibe re:covid where you were?

            • @prhino: Denver was fine. San Diego was fine.

LA was bad. I think that's where I picked up covid. You could feel it everywhere. Rude LA

              • @Miso: Oh wow, hopefully you didn't get it too badly, and it didn't ruin your trip (assuming it's a holiday).

I'll be in NY, which has a lot of covid circulating.

        • +1

Just came back from the US and did one at a Terry White Chemist. For mine they gave me the kit and watched me take the swap, but then they did the rest. Others may be different and allow you to do the mix, put droplets on the cartridge. Just as long as it is supervised and they give you a certificate for it you're fine. Air Canada then allows you to upload a scan of the certificate to their portal, but you should also bring a paper copy with you.

      • Awesome. Much cheaper than that stupid pcr test

  • -2

Yuck. Unless you're flying from Sydney there's so many connecting flights on the cheapest fares.

    • They look pretty standard to me, for these times. I'm flying to NY from Melbourne this weekend on a normal economy fare, and the # of connections / travel time is much the same.

  • concrete jungle where dreams are made!
