Affordable Moving Options in VIC

Hi all,

I've finally managed to secure a property after about 3 months of endless applications, so I now need to get some movers organised but it's getting very expensive.

Anyone have any ideas on affordable movers at all? I can't move big items on my own so I'll need to get someone to help out. I've thought about getting friends to help out but was worried about them accidently dropping things etc.

The original plan was for me to pack up and move all the little things myself in boxes and bags and just leave the heavy things to the movers, dining table, desks, TV etc.

Any help is much appreciated.

Movers are just as likely to break things.

You can hire a man and a van or something like that but friends is cheapest particularly if one of you has. ate or trailer.

What are the current quotes you are getting? What is ‘expensive’ for you?

    • It's been about $800+ Most are quoting me at around the 1k mark.

  • had really good experience with this mob a few times: https://www.fragileremovals.com.au/ - got them to do the heavier stuff and I did the smaller stuff myself

take a look on fb marketplace for boxes, otherwise bunnings has them. the packing tape at bunnings is crap :)

this is good: https://www.amazon.com.au/Moving-Storage-Packing-Crystal-6-P… - you can use the extra tape when packing up your items you sold on ebay because you realised you've moved too much :)

    good luck with the move!

    • Haha thanks for the advice, I'll take a look at those guys.

  • Moved 6 months ago, did smaller and fragile things myself in the car. Movers for furniture and white goods. It's one of the few things I don't mind paying more for. It's not something that you have to do often, you want someone insured, and it's back breaking work so I don't mind paying someone else to do it.

    • I'm in the same mind frame, I'm just trying not to pay more than half my monthly rent in moving costs how much did you pay in movers?

  • If you have time, pack everything yourself, hire a van, and ask friend to help (or airtasker a big muscle guy)

If you dont have time, hire a moving company.
I see movemystuff and kahlonmovers are the cheapest.

    • Are they reliable as well?

I plan on packing everything myself and leaving the bigger things to the movers

Your plan to move the fragile stuff yourself is sound. I usually do that the day before the main move.

For heavy stuff, I've used metromovers.com.au. a few times, young strong blokes, know what they're doing.

    • How much did it cost you in moving fees? I'll take a look at them :)

  • Find a friend with a towbar and hire https://www.moveyourself.com.au/?page=details&cat=trailers_f…

I've done this for my sister as well as myself a few times. Lucky I had a car with a towbar, but so easy and helpful. Plus cheapish. Had some family help out and done, straight forward.

  • Theres no advantage in doing any bits yourself IMWO… just let them do the lot, thats what your paying for.

Make sure they are insured before starting.

Get quote in writing - as a mate found out when they turned up on the day he had to be out and asked $800 (from memory)more knowing he had no choice.

as said - what do you consider expensive, and how far exactly are you going? 4klm or 4000klm?

for me, doing the smaller bits myself turned a 2 day move into a 1 day move, so I saved a bit but YMMV

    • Places I've looked at are quoting $800+ most are around the $1000 mark which is getting a bit eye watering. Moving about 25lm away.

      • how muxh were you expecting for at least a full day for a truck adn 2 blokes with insurance?

        • I don't know, but 2-3 weeks rent seems a bit steep

Last time I moved I hired from Europcar a small truck with lifter platform, bit bigger than Coles/Woolworth home delivery trucks.
