Change of Mind Return Policies for Fashion Stores

I purchased a $100+ t-shirt for my partner and he didn't like it so I went back the next day to return it only to be told that they only do exchanges.

After speaking to the salesperson for a while she agreed to do return but then she said only managers could do returns but her manager wasn't in until tomorrow. So I went back again the next day and the manager told me that only the online customer support can process a return so I went home again and emailed customer support only to be told that they do exchanges only.

This has been a huge waste of my time as I do not live near this store and the t-shirt was in it's original packaging and hasn't even been opened. It's pretty frustrating because I've purchased a few times from this store and this experience has just put me off purchasing from them ever again.

What should I do next?

Read the shop's return policy and see what it says (also good practise before you purchase anything anywhere). Retailers are not obliged to refund "change of mind" returns.

but the store assistant and the manager the next day both agreed to process the refund?

      • +2

But then they clearly didn't. What does their policy say?

        • -1

store policy said only returns for damaged items or incorrect items but manager agreed to make an exception

@cxz106: It sounds more like the manager told you to go online and ask as they don't have the power to make an exception.

It's frustrating, but best move is to vote with your wallet and go elsewhere in future.

      • They 'agreed' in verbal, non-binding agreement, and then proceeded to give you a truly hilarious runaround in the hopes that eventually you'd give up.

    What should I do next?

Get a new boyfriend who appreciates $100+ tshirts.

Tip: you won't find him on ozbargain

    Who spends $100 on a t shirt? That's nuts

How is "t-shirt" and "fashion" in the same story?

    • +1

      "$100"

      • Yep, $100 probably shouldn't work with either of those words either.
        It's just clothes.

It's got a Gucci logo on it.

  • Well did you buy the shirt online?
Does the Bricks and mortar store have to process your refund?
    What is their return policy?

You'll find that in many/some cases the B&M store is disconnected from the online store and thus purchases are treated as separate.

  • OK, don't buy from them again and find a store that has a refund policy that confirms your requirements.

  • I have a strong preference for stores that do easy change of mind returns. It is at the discretion of the business though and I can see how it would be hard for smaller businesses to offer it.

  • What should I do next?

Go back and exchange it for a shirt you like instead and move on with your life.

Change of mind refunds are not law and up to the retailer which the policy says they don't do.

    • Go back and exchange it for a shirt you like instead and move on with your life.

This is OzMoan… stop making sense.

    • Go back and exchange it

Just to clarify, providing change of mind exchange isn’t a legal requirement either.
If the retailer offers it, great. If not, it really is a case of too-bad-so-sad-next-time-pick-more-carefully.

      • Just to clarify, providing change of mind exchange isn’t a legal requirement either.

True, but is being offered. So the OP should do this.

$100 shirt, is your boyfriend Elon Musk or something? What's wrong with the Target Basics shirts on sale for $5.

    • +1

He doesn't buy the $5 basics t-shirts when they go onto the clearance rack at $2

      What a waste.

      • He doesn't just pilfer t-shirts for free from the St Vinnies donation bin out the front of the Target

        ngmi.
