How Come We Are STILL Being Sold Dud Phones Online?

I am joining this forum because it is still too easy for unscrupulous vendors to sell dud phones online. I know because it happened to me. So what to do? Feel sorry for myself? Or maybe help others to understand the dangers and maybe gather the information we need to put pressure on the offenders? It's a long shot but I am up for it. Let me know what you think.

I think some context would be helpful. What phone was it? Who sold it? What was wrong with it?

Oh, come on… We don't let facts get in the way of a good rant!

Test and reset, before handing over CASH.

This is a fantastic idea, I just need $50 to get started on it.

isnt it too early for troll post?

I've got a crazy idea, so hear me out. Buy from a reputable vendor. Holy smokes, it may seem nuts, but I've got a feeling that it may just work.

    • Instead of buying from that bargain seller, too-good-to-be-true at 70% off RRP, you must be crazy! 🤣

How Come We Are STILL Being Sold Dud Phones Online?

    and

I know because it happened to me.

It's because people like you still insist on trying to buy cheap phones from dodgey online places that sell dud phones!

Show us the phone and the seller and we may be able to show you where you went wrong.

Not one of those top spec for $180 Aliexpress phones I hope.

  • +1

    cool

  • You can substitute 'phone' for anything.

  • What's a dud phone mean?

My guess is they bought an App1e iPh0ne 13 Maxx Pro Elite 64Tb model for $159.99 off Fartbook and what they got was not what they thought. And now the seller is claiming it's quite clear in the description that it was an iPh0ne and not an iPhone.

  • And promote app or website in 3…2…1…

  • There are plenty of unscrupulous sellers, especially on ebay. The issue is nobody is doing anything about it, so the seller has nothing to lose in trying to scam buyers, worst case scenario they'll have to refund the money.
I just reported 3 sellers to ebay this morning, I got a refund from 2 of them and I didn't buy from the 3rd one, who is literally selling a used and refurbished item as "Never Used, Like Brand New", except in the description they admit to having bought it from a second hand ebay seller and the item comes with 6 a month warranty from that seller rather than the standard 2 years form the manufacturer.
For the record, none of the 3 items in question are cheap, especially the last one having a buy it now price of $5,899.95.

  • Because suckers keep buying them!

Great to get so many replies - a wide range, from fun to informative. Here's the plan: I post a unique email address to this forum; anyone who's interested sends a message to it (no need for any content) and the mail autoresponder shoots you the address of a webpage which describes my experience. The webpage has a link to a PDF providing more evidence. If we get enough people responding, then we have the beginnings of a group that can help other purchasers and maybe, just maybe, eventually be able to pressure the online sellers to mend their ways. So whaddayouthink?

    • +1

      Yeah…. Nah.

    • You're never gonna have enough viewership to stop dumb ppl from buying from dumb sites/sellers, like what you did

    • +1

why not just upload and link the pdf?

    • +1

So what to do? Feel sorry for myself?

Is it too late for you to go back and pick the 'feeling sorry for myself' option? I think that one is better.

Just four replies this time probably because we are getting to the nitty gritty. Are people wondering 'is this guy putting tickets on himself?" or maybe 'that will never work' but if you don't aim high you never know what's possible. I could simply post a link to my pdf but then I wouldn't have any way to follow up. And for this to work and make the ebays of the world take notice, we eventually need a very big group of folks. It can be done.

    • +2

      It can be done.

Based on how popular this forum post alone has been, and your vague replies, you really need to put that pipe down…

    • I wouldn't have any way to follow up

Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a mailing list?

  • All comments noted, special thanks to RiseAndRuin for their post which gives a better understanding of how real-life transactions could happen on eBay.

      Negative Feedback

An obvious bad refurb of an old phone sold by AT&T in US in April 2018 according to MyMAC. Repackaged and sealed as new with many faults, battery, glass, everything was wrong. I was able to receive a full refund but there are many complicated steps in order to get your refund. Awful experience
New Apple iPhone 8 64/256GB Factory Unlocked Gray Silver Gold in Sealed Box (#324207107204)

This item is listed as "NEW" but I received a refurbished phone. I contacted the seller and they agreed it was a refurbished phone and could not offer me a "NEW" phone as they did not actually have any but continue to sell the item as "NEW". This is fraud. Do not buy from this company.

Refund has finally came in! Just an absolute nightmare. Phone didnt work and the steps to get the rightful refund back were complex. Then plus extra cost in sending back!! Never never again. Ivy was helpful in assisting refund thats the ONLY positive. Certainly do not recommend 😞
      APPLE IPHONE 7 32GB/128GB/256GB - UNLOCKED SMARTPHONE - EXCELLENT (#224610255483)

Phone had been opened and repackaged with Chinese accessories, phone looked new but had already been factory reset at least once before i got it. Not brand new, some type of scam i think. Not worth the risk, buy elsewhere.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS SELLER !! I purchased 3 x phones for Christmas & it has been the biggest nightmare… I purchased them as they were unlocked but, NO they sent a product I did not pay for, 1 was locked & useless to me. Now they are just delaying, they want, me to try this & that (did not work) then take pictures etc. Send phone back that I have paid for & no nothing as in effort on their part. They ruined my Christmas & a important present. BAD SELLER, THE ACTUAL WORST I HAVE DEALT WITH

      Apple iPhone 8 64GB/256GB - Grey Silver Gold - Unlocked Smartphone - New (#324887813927)

Ordered what was advertised as a Brand New Note 10. When I opened the box it had a card. "Made in China" on back of the phone, made in Vietnam. After a lot of careful checking I noticed the back of the phone was not stuck down properly and was open. The adhesive (easliy seen through the crack) was white and Samsungs adhesive is black. After contacting the seller and a few photos sent I received a refund. That was the positive part. Will not use them again.
      New 6.3"Samsung Galaxy Note 10 N970F 8G/256GB Colors 1Yr Wty Free Express (#233644412139)

The red flags are there. The key is learning to look for them.

You received yours in Oct/Nov last year, which means some of those feedback comments were there already

  • Thanks spackbace, the evidence builds that ebay is not paying attention and doesn't choose to. A big corporation that talks the talk, has the resources to do a better job of protecting its customers but isn't going that extra mile. For me, just not worth the risk or the hassle.
