Hey man, whatever floats your boat dog

  • +4

I might be wrong but I thought dogs know to swim? Please correct me if I got it wrong.

Not all dog breeds are good at swimming naturally, some will be better than others.

Lab > Bulldog is an example, bulldogs don't float the best, neither do other stocky, short-limbed breeds.

My understanding is these are designed for when you have dogs on boats in case your dog slips over the side. You keep its head above water until you can fish it out again. I’m not sure a $1 will do the job properly.

Also useful for injured or older dogs that aren't great swimmers and hydrotherapy.

        • Good point. Something like this would, probably, work for that. I’m thinking more of the open water usage.

          • @try2bhelpful: I got one for use on boats and ended up using it more when when my dog got old. I suspect the idea started with boat use in mind and just people found other users.

            • @CookieJacker31: Sounds like a good idea in both cases. We have cats and, funnily enough, support when they are in the water isn’t a big issue :)

Real dogs yes. We've selectively bred a few breeds that are basically a cruel joke.

Current Bulldogs for instance cant breath, breed without assistance, swim and they basically all have hip dysplasia.

    • My dog loves swimming but he has way too much hair, if he swims at the beach or off the boat it pulls him down. Still cries is he can't come in though but you have to hold him up. Going to try and find one of these in stock somewhere and give it a go, thanks op

      Could it swim though?

  • I have a blue staffy ~25kg. She's a solid girl who just sinks in the water. I bought one of these floating vests. Unfortunately for my dog there wasn't enough padding to keep her floating. I ended up getting a different one from one of the pet shops and it works perfectly.

    • +4

That was unfortunate indeed for the staffy.

      Which different dog you've got?

      ;)

      • Don’t ya just love the English language. :)

Ahh, good to see progress in the field of canine PFDs. The old salts among us will remember the terrible tragedy of HMS Flotsam, the dog carrying ferry operating the daily service between London and Liverpool in the 1880s. On November 8, 1886, not long after departing port the Flotsam encountered a pod of angry squid at the mouth of the River Thames.

Despite the heroic efforts of the crew, the squid managed to tip the ship on her side upon whence the passengers of 762 corgi and 3 crew were cast into the freezing waters of the North Sea. Lacking PFDs, and famously being one of the few dog breeds unable to swim, hundreds upon hundreds of corgis slipped beneath the waves, their incessant yapping never to be heard again.

However, the horror didn't end there, as a few days later as their inflated corpses washed down the Thames with the incoming tide. The mass of bodies pootled beneath the span of Tower Bridge at precisely 12:00pm, just as the bells of the surrounding cathedrals tolled their grim corgi cacophony.

To this day, the term "flotsam" is applied to any material discarded accidentally from a ship, in honour of those brave toy dogs.

P.S. the HMS Jetsam was also attacked and sunk that day. But it was filled with cats, so no-one really cared.
