Selling Whisky Online, via Dealers V eBay

Hi all, my father has a dozen or so expensive looking bottles of spirit. Scotch Whisky, VSOP and Cognac.

Here are some pix I took a few years back

I have been looking at few local sites, however I saw some mixed reviews.
EG:
https://www.sellmybottle.com.au/
https://www.mybottleshop.au/sellmybottle-10-bottle-valuation… (Dodgy reviews)
https://liquortown.com.au/sell-bottles/
https://winehaven.com.au/
https://www.nicks.com.au/info/we-buy-and-sell-whisky-collect…

Otherwise there is Ebay, but I will need to obtain a liquor license, not too mention all the Ebay fees, packaging etc.

Any fellow Ozbr's had experience?

  • Sell the bottles as part of a hamper/gift pack.

I will need to obtain a liquor license

What's involved with that? I assume it's too expensive/difficult for someone that's just selling a few bottles.

Also, even with a liquor license, I assume ebay will have their own hurdles to clear to sell liquor. You might need to set up a store or similar.

I'm not sure how much success you'll have as a seller on ebay. People buying expensive liquor like some sort assurance about the provenance of the bottle. A reputable auction house/reseller might give a buyer that comfort. Do you really want to deal with a buyer who's unhappy with their purchase on ebay?

I don't have any direct experience with selling, but have bought on graysonline, wickmans, and langtons. All three places will sell your spirits too.

I sold my two bottles of Japanese whiskey through Langton's. Was a fairly seamless experience. They took 15%. One didn't meet reserve so I set it slightly lower and they listed it again and this time it sold. Was happy

  • Sell through local auction house. Less hassle.

    You can also try https://www.australianwhiskyauctions.com.au/

Looking at the filtering options on past auctions, it looks like they also list non-whiskies as well.

Your expectations should be set low for these, none of them are of any particular value. The biggest problem you have is not being able to see inside most of the bottles so there is no way to gauge oxidation/evaporation.

  • I can't speak for the cognac but the whisky bottles are worth between $50 and maybe $200 each (I'm no expert just my opinion).

The green Cognac is quite rare. I've seen it 469 euro.
