Stacks with AmEx $50 Credit with $250 Purchase, 10% ShopBack Cashback, & tax deduction as a work expense.

Buckle up for a wild ride with this one. ECCO are offering a good discount on their Lars leather laptop bag ($239.96, down from $449.95) as part of their Online Frenzy sale. This can be further reduced to $215.96 by using a unique 10% discount code obtained by signing up to the ECCO newsletter.

This offer is OK, but it can be Ozbargained to the max by doing the following:

  • AmEx is offering $50 off ECCO purchases over $250. To meet the spending criteria for this offer, you'll need to add a low value item to bring the total above $250. For example, add a set of socks to bring the total order to $251.92 after adding the newsletter code. Note that you need to enrol in this offer in the AmEx app before making your purchase.

  • ShopBack is currently currently offering 10% off ECCO Store purchases, up from 5%.

  • There's a very good chance this bag is tax deductible if you use it to carry your work computer. For those of us earning regular incomes, I suspect this means a deduction of $70.19 ($215.92*32.5%). I would confirm this with my accountant before tax time, but this ATO advice suggests that cashback offers are not assessable for the purpose of calculating tax deductions. As always, you should speak with an independent financial professional before making decisions that impact your tax return (i.e. don't rely on OzBargain for financial advice!).

By my calculations, combining these offers with a tax deduction could net you a bag and bonus socks for as little at $106.53 (even less if you earn more than $120,000). Alternatively, you could swap the socks for a $10.95 metal shoehorn and ignore the newsletter code for a total price of $97.83 after cashback / tax deduction (not using the the newsletter code saves you money by increasing the deductible amount from $215.92 to $239.96). I think the socks are worth the extra $$$, but YMMV.

I haven't bitten yet as I already have two laptop bags, but FOMO may change my mind if this deal is popular! Enjoy.

Ha! Check out the updated post; I discovered a 10% newsletter discount code which makes this even more of a rabbit hole (particularly when you consider that the discount code reduces your possible tax deduction).

  • Does sound like a good deal but how’s the quality?

I can't comment on the bag, but I've had good experiences with Ecco shoes

Yo dawg, I heard you like bargains so I stacked your stack so you can save while you save (original ECCO discount) while you save (additional Online Frenzy discount) while you save (newsletter code) while you save (AmEx) while you save (Shopback) while you save (tax deduction) while you save (free delivery).

using that sign up.discount code would invalidate shopback cashbacm

  • The cash back from Amex must be targeted. I have not seen that offer.
