ReAmped Energy General Discussion: No Longer Taking New Customers, Usage Charges Increasing

Just saw this: https://www.facebook.com/ReAmpedEnergy/photos/a.204384449899…

"Dear Australia, we love you, but given major volatility in the energy market, we have made the tough decision to stop taking as many new customers as possible, at this time. This choice enables us to look after our existing ReAmped customers and we’ll be back in the market for new customers when the time is right.

Thanks for your continued support, ReAmped Energy x"

Similar. Immediately switched to Origin - as it was the only 12 month fixed price contract I could find

      • Me too!

  • It finally happened here in SA, rates and dates received by email:

Are you still sticking with ReAmped?

      • Certainly switching elsewhere before then.

    Lightweights… My new tariffs haha

    Shoulder: $0.4825/kWh

    • where?

      • +2

        Regional NSW, Essential Energy network.

I think I just snuck into Nectr the night before they closed, still waiting for the switch though.

  • +1

Bloody hell those are BIG percentage increases - they'll really hurt folks who are big power users and havent been staying on top of this evolving area.

I'd say if anyone is sitting on the fence about jumping on ANY proper fixed rate plan you can - act now as they're surely going to be removed ASAP.

And for the umpteenth time make sure you're aware of the difference between a 12mth contract period and a true FIXED rate plan - it's completely different.

Looking at the wholesale pricing looks like QLD, VIC and even a few other states are really having their average pricing go through the roof. There's no easy solution to this either, is just a situation where folks have to grin and bear it.

    • What are the differences?

  • Anyone in Vic received any new rates? havent see anything notification come through, unless for Vic have to wait until August 1st

    • im still waiting

YIKES! Just got another email from Reamped. Very glad I switched away to a fixed plan a few days ago, old rates and new rates as of 27JUN stated below:
    OLD RATES
    Peak: $0.264/kWh
    Shoulder: $0.198/kWh
    Off-Peak: $0.134/kWh
    Ctrl Load 1: $0.1358/kWh
    Supply Charge: $1.4189/day

    NEW RATES
    Peak: $0.5173/kWh
    Shoulder: $0.4825/kWh
    Off-Peak: $0.394/kWh
    Ctrl Load 1: $0.3628/kWh
    Supply Charge: $1.9708/day

Doubling of peak rates, double and a half on shoulder, CL1 and offpeak tripled and just for good measure a near 50% raise in supply charge!

PS. Question for those more knowledgable - given near record wholesale power prices, why have their been a number of providers reducing their already meagre solar feed in tarriffs to zero? I don't have solar (shading issues) but seems counterintuitive?

    • Who did you switch to?

      • Red Energy Living Energy Saver - was the best fixed plan available and vastly superior to these new ReAmped rates. Plus $100 WW card (in theory!) as was done via Finder.

        • Gday Nikko, where do you see the $100WW card? can only see some pseudo crypto $100 finder wallet credit. whatever that is.

    • +2

Negged for putting my rates up? Ok sorry for trying to provide info for folks.

  • I switched to allinta and got these rates which seem great and surprisingly low!

    Peak Usage : 13.750 c/kWH
    Controlled load : 14.52 c/kWh
    Maximum Demand Charge
(4pm - 9pm Monday to Friday, 4pm - 9pm Saturday/Sunday, 4pm - 9pm Public Holidays) : 9.889 c/kW/Day (NOT SURE what this is, apparently if I exceed an arbitrary amount during those hours, I will be charged that on top of normal rate )
    Daily Charge: 96.173 c/Day

These are not fixed, and I asked if they know if they are going to increase their rates soon, and the support rep said they have no such communication for rate rise, yet….. YET!

Worth the risk staying with them?

    • Those are very low rates - especially the peak usage rate. Others can't really tell you the risk, as only you know how much the bill going up to say the rates others in your area (which we don't know) are now paying. i.e if you're well off, it's not a big deal - if more limited income your power bill going up a lot could be a big issue.

I'd say compare the above rates to whatever the best fixed rate plan available to you is - factor in your power usage and income etc and then you'll have a better idea of worth staying or switching.

I'd be pretty certain that THOSE rates will be increasing significantly though. - way too low for just about anywhere in the country.

  • +3

So… I checked Origin Go (fixed plan) a few days ago and now their fixed rate plan has risen drastically.
    Ctrl Load 1 Was 11.84c, Now 13.48c
Usage (Single Rate) Was 23.87c/kW, now 27.16c/kW
Supply Fee Was 76.99c, now 87.6c
That's about $400 extra a year on my usage level.

Also, Finder previously had Red Energy listed so I would've got a $100 gift card; but it's been removed now…so I was too slow. Red Energy is the cheapest for me (Ausgrid) that has fixed rates…I will be signing up.

Moral of the story - don't wait…providers are updating their rates and deals seem to be ending, I'd jump asap.

    • +1

Moral of the story - don't wait

Indeed, it just wasn't worthy playing a waiting game as some people were suggesting here. Luckily I moved to Origin fixed plan - which was about 10% more than their variable but just now - they have increased their Fixed further by another 10-12% (Ouch!).

Interesting to see what they will do to their variable plans before July!

    • +3

I think this is one of those occasions where "don't panic" doesn't apply. Reamped sounded the alarm and some people walked to the doors - others waited for the smoke and ran to the doors - I think it's clear now that there is a fire raging and now it's a case of finding an exit - any exit.

      • +1

Good call. Reminds me of musical chairs, hesitate and your options will suddenly disappear - except here you'll always have options but they might just be very unpleasant.

There was a chap earlier in this thread urging folks to hold off accepting ReAmped's offer and moving for a $100WW car - saying he was holding out for more $$$ as he was certain they'd increase their offer.

Which made little sense to me as Reamped could always just increase their prices to whatever they liked - if you stayed after the 2-3 weeks notice it was on you. SO cost them in the short term only to have folks on sub-market price deals.

Now if you still want even just the $100 WW card you have only a handful of crappy offers to chose from and NONE of them are fixed - so highly likely to be increasing much more in the very short term. That was a bet that went very badly wrong.

        • heh, I remember that post and actually listened to him. Now I've lost….I always lose :(

Has the $100 WW offer been pulled? Where is everyone going? Would appreciate some advice

    • @dammit, Risen drastically? Given the current circumstances dunno if I'd say that a 10-15% increase is that - I think a lot of us would have loven to have had that or even triple that. Many were doubled - mine was around about 250% increased as the main usage for us was CL1 which was 300% increased.

Your point regarding folks acting NOW is correct - though I feel it's actually going to be a tad late for many. I'd used that Finder offer myself and signed with Red's Fixed plan - but recheck after you said this and yes it's now been removed - so I'd say it's nolonger available for anyone (via Finder). Though you can still sign up to this plan via their website and perhaps other 3rd parties for a kickback. Kinda surpriced it hasn;t been yanked or even modified yet.

Get ready for the social media posts of folks opening their next electricity bills and being floored by how high they are.

      • yep very true. luckily I used an ozbargain referrer to score us both a $50 egift card on red energy, so whilst not as good a deal as the $100 back from reamped via Finder-, $50 is the best I could find and at least I'm locked in now on rates.

  • Do we need to organise a special meter read for Red Energy, or just wait out the 10 business day cooling off and then the transfer will happen automatically? I'm in Ausgrid NSW if that's any help. Reamped says to do a special meter read but Red Energy says it takes 10 business days to serve the cooling off and for them to then become financially responsible for me or something- don't understand. Would rather not pay a meter fee if it's unnecessary but equally I don't want to still be active on reamped when the price rise date hits!

    • The consumer doesn't need to do anything - the switch over occurs before the 10 day cooling off period - thats just 10 days in which you can get cold feet and move to someone else or not at all.

Oddly for me, despite having a Smart meter (get one if you don't have one already, generally easy to get done for free upon request from your power provider) - they sent out a person to read the meter. Found this confusing - as Smart meter sends data every 30mins - so why is a guy coming out?

You'd really have to contact Reamped to ask. I can't see why you'd be having to pay a meter read fee - but you might have special circumstances - but that seems odd.

Main thing is if you've switched to Red (or anyone else) and gotten an email from them - you'll be moved over - the providers will then arrange the meter reads between themselves so they can divy up the billing etc.

      • You would think that, I had the experience that my chosen new provider didn't bother to follow through with switching me, even after they sent the contract and confirmed my rates and set up an online account. It wasn't until I asked ReAmped about 2 weeks later if I was still their customer (I was) that I found out

I was, so I called my "new" provider who told me (maybe by accident) that they hadn't processed their new customers because they couldn't afford to, even though over 10 days had passed by that point and they sent me a contract.

So I've been on ReAmped higher rates since the 25th may, since the new mob didn't follow through with their end of the deal. I'm now dealing with the Qld energy ombudsman, but since I don't trust the new mob I chose (Radian), I switched again.

Also, about meter reading, from what I have read, they can switch you on any day, they will just use estimates if you have a old meter to switch you on that particular day, saves them sending anyone out.

  • For anyone signing up online to the Origin Go / Woolworths fixed plans, I couldn't find a suitable option for the connection reason as I was simply transferring my service and not moving into a new property. Online chat agreed, and suggested I use the "received a letter to sign up" option (5th option). You still have to enter your "move in date" so I just set it to today.

Also, this is the link for WW Rewards up to 30,000 points.

    https://www.originenergy.com.au/campaign/rewards-points/

When you enter your Woolworths reward number, the plan name changes from "Origin Go" to "Origin Everyday Rewards" but they are the same energy rates (confirmed with chat), just that you get free green energy now with the WW plan.

  • Just made to switch to Alinta. Their prices are actually cheaper than pre-price hike Reamped but let's see how long that lasts.

    Reamped original pricing
    Anytime: $0.2996/kWh
    Supply Charge: $0.6631/day

    Reamped new pricing
    Anytime: $0.4392/kWh
    Supply Charge: $0.8188/day

    Alinta
    Anytime: $0.209/kWh
    Supply Charge: $0.627/day

  • I churned from ReAmped to Nectr. What's the process to follow with leaving and paying your final ReAmped bill, and how do you claim back any credit with them? (Nectr officially transfer me on 30th June.)

    That is:

    • Do I have to let ReAmped know I'm leaving?
    • Does Nectr (new energy provider) notify ReAmped (old provider) I'm leaving?
    • Do I have to photograph the meter reading on a certain day, do something with it, etc?
    • Do you have to apply for a refund of credit before a certain date?
    • +1

You don't need to let reamped know. you'll see nay remaining balance on your last statement then get in touch with them via chat to transfer the balance.

    • You're lucky to have got onto Nectr. They pulled their plans only hours after all these threads were merged.

      • Yep, the afternoon of the same morning I switched, I think. :-D

        • Nice. I literally bolted as my prices would have gone up

          • +1

@DemocracyManifest: I haven't checked but I should have been transferred today. I got a ReAmped text or email in the last couple of days saying their new prices are starting. Before that I was worried how much my last ReAmped bill would be because it's been really cold so I've been running an electric heater… but I didn't realise the new pricing hadn't started yet. ;-)

  • Well my switch to Lumo went through today, so I'm out of the woods hopefully. I put it through within hours of getting the initial email.
Lumo like Red Energy are owned by Snowy Hydro, which is in turn owned by the Aus gov.
Hopefully that will mean they stay afloat through all of this.

I kinda wish I'd signed up with AGL though. They are the ones creating this disaster, so it only seems fair they pay the cost

    • +1

so it only seems fair they pay the cost

I don't know what are you talking about!

How does you signing up to AGL makes them "pay the cost".

      • AGL can’t really afford to make their electricity too expensive…their increases look to be $300 on a average bill and that’s still less than what a lot of the smaller providers will increase their prices by

  • Does anyone know if I get 10,000 Qantas points plus the $50 egift card if I get a referral from someone here with Red Energy???

  • Bit the bullet and moved onto a more expensive, but fixed plan, after Reamped's latest emails, informing me of a 74% rate increase. Energy Oz No Frills. The most expensive unit cost on my list of 13 plans. But right in the middle in terms of Daily Supply Charge.

    DSC: $0.73
    Unit: $0.2214

Alinta says it's putting its prices up on 1 July. Momentum stopped taking new customers.

With an online $50 bonus and a $70 from cashrewards, I guess things will balance themselves out a bit.

  • +1

I switched from Reamped to Energy Locals lately. Their rates including solar feed-in tariff (GST incl) are quite good as below. They do have a Membership of $12.99 (Per month). Six months of membership is credited back after six months staying with Energy Locals - saving you $77.94.

    Anytime 19.50 (c/kWh)
    Daily Supply 65.00 (c/day)
    Retailer feed-in tariff 7.00 (c/kWh)

Also, if you join Energy Locals via Wattever you would get a $50 egift card. Limited time only. Promotion Period from 1 June 2022 to 30 June 2022. WATTever reserves the right to vary or withdraw this promotional offer at any time.

  • i got this email from nectr. thank you nectr!

Thank you again for signing up to Nectr recently.

We will be transferring you over to Nectr on 30 June 2022 – at the competitive rates that you signed up to. This plan includes a 1-year benefit period, meaning you will be shielded from any rate rises for the following 12 months.

Please note, even though we have temporarily paused accepting new customers, your transfer to Nectr was protected.

  • FWIW from the day I used Finder (only for the $100 WW GC) to sign up to Red Energy - to actually changing over to my account being fully active with them, took 11 days (around 7 business days). Just got my final bill from Reamped, slightly in credit - which being that I paid via CC I assume they will refund back in due course. So was quicker than I thought as I'd imagine a lot of customer churn at present.

Bit disappointed given that maximum whole caps came in quite a while ago they seem determined to press ahead with charges that were MASSIVELY above that and therefore cannot be explained or justified by wholesale price increases (maximum wholesale cost in NSW of $0.30/kW and yet from later this month they'd be charging me $0.64 /kW in peak times!)

Nice to be on a fixed price through to May 2023 - especially as the Red plan allows you to leave at any time without penalty, on the off chance something better comes along.

Energy Australia's fixed plan was good BUT they didn't have a 'Time of Use' option - atleast for my area - and that allows big savings vs single rate plan. Highly recommend those who don't have a smart meter to request one from your service provider ASAP - they're now generally COMPLETELY FREE and offer huge benefits over the old meters.

    • I went with Energy Aus NO Frills vs Red
      DSC: $0.7150 \ $0.81378
      Unit: $0.2310 \ $0.2231

      • If you only have & only want a single rate tarrif - that might have been superior. But Time of Usage rates offer vastly superior savings and EA wasn't offering them in my area.

Also there was no $100 WW GC via Finder on EA. The EA plan is a good option for some though. :-)

Upgrading your meter to a smart meter is more often than not able to done at NO COST to you - via your power provider, well worth doing - I held off for too long not realising it was no cost to me at all - power providers save $$$ on it as well , so they want you to do it.

        • Yep, you're right, I don't have time of usage. But now that I'm WFH, the single rate works better for me.
What cost benefit does the smart meter offer? As in, will it save me $$?

          • +1

@lordra: Yes, saves you $$$ - google them and read up - pretty straight forward - made a huge difference to our bills when we easily adjusted our usage habits e.g all high power usage tasks (as possible) done in offpeak times.

    • Hi Nikko,

Sorry I am late to the party as I was overseas.
I still have the $100 gift card offer from ReAmped. It appeared in my facebook ads.
However, finder is only showing me 4 options DoDo, Origin, AGL, EnergyAustralia.

However, energy made easy has many options cheapest being Endeavour Energy and Red Energy.

So, how to do I get the $100 gift card now as I wish to switch to Endeavour or Red. If I switch to Red Energy, I would also use referral bonus to get the $50 gift card.

  • I signed up to AGL 3 June and still haven't been connected. :(. Seems they transfer when the meter is read which isn't until another 2 months.

    • if you have smart meter, you can just contact AGL, they might do it earlier.

    • +1

My transfer was done the next day (another retailer) and Origin and Energy Australia both verbally told me that it should only take a day or 2. I don't have a smart meter, you should def. follow it up with them.

Switching retailers at the next meter read used to be the case but there are new laws as of last year.

Energy retailers now have up to two business days to finalise an existing customers’ account and transfer their details to their new provider.

  • Anyone got a gift cards from red energy yet?

    • I would not expect anyone would have as nobody would be even close to the conditions of the offer:

Once you have passed the cancellation period with your new provider, you will be issued a gift card approximately 90 days after switching.

  • +2

Hi All - looks like Energy Australia has now pulled its no frills plan (12 months locked rate at ~$0.24 per kwh)…

If you went with their variable low rate plan (flexi), that too has changed over recent days and has gone from a $75 credit on first bill + 20% discount on monthly bills, to zero credit on first bill and just 5% discount monthly.

Things are getting worse and worse if you are still holding out.

    • Unfortunately the only thing that surprises me is that they didn't remove it earlier.

If there wasn't few true 'fixed rate' plans already - thats one less option! I'd jump on Red Energy's Living Saver while its still there (just checked and rates on it hasn't changed in my area anyway).

      • Agree - was surprised it hung around that long although not as competitive as some of the other fixed rates that were out there. I suspect they now have an idea of just how much they are going to raise their rates on 1 July.

EDIT: My initial comment said the flexi plan has zero credit on first bill… its actually now $25 (previously $75).

  • Reamped did it again. Increasing from 1st Aug. VIC.

  • Now that I know what the price hike is, I’ll be looking for something better! Because I’m in Victoria I can change to the default offer which will save some money off the new August 1 rates but I’m bound to find a better offer elsewhere.

      Same.

I will look into offers/deals mid July once all providers have finalised their plans.

  • Got the increase email too but this bit added:

Could you save money on another plan?

Based on your past usage, our ReAmped Standard plan may cost you up to $379.86 less per year than your current plan from 1 August 2022. Our Standard plan is priced at the level of the Victorian Default Offer (as at 1 July 2022) which is regulated by the Essential Services Commission. This plan is subject to your existing Market Terms and Conditions and is not a Standard Retail Contract. If you would like to switch to this plan, please contact us on live chat.

So what’s the go? Is it increasing or decreasing if staying with Reamped?

    • They are saying that if you stay on your current ReAmped plan starting August 1 (when the price hike takes effect), the new rates for your current plan will be $379.86 more expensive per year than switching to the ReAmped Standard Plan (which is the Victorian Default Offer) from August 1. I would use this as the benchmark when comparing offers from other providers.

      • Further to this, reamped prices are still a lot cheaper on their standard plan than other retailers so not sure what's the deal.

Does reamped just want us to go on their standard plan or leave?

  • Genuine question - why did you wait this long to switch from ReAmped? What were you waiting for?

    • +1

Few reasons, enjoying the current low rates for a few weeks longer knowing they couldn’t hike rates until August, as well as attempting calling their bluff by waiting for the price rise notice and hoping the increase wasn’t that much to avoid switching. (My bluff failed)

      • fair enough, I know a lot of people were calling it a bluff and some were even waiting for $500 gift card offer from ReAmped/Finder before making a move lol.

I am glad I made the call to move straight away and got really good pricing from Origin on their fixed plan.

        • Whilst I wasn’t able to get on the really good deals like Nectr, I switched to Lumo (just before they changed their plans too) and I’ll only end up paying $140 more per year which isn’t too bad considering the current state of the market. Plus I may potentially get $100 of gift cards from referrals.

  • Lumo no longer offers a fixed price contract plan

  • FYI for anyone who signed up to Origin's fixed Go plan via Woolworths Rewards, I received my 20,000 + 10,000 points today (Elec + Gas). Signed up on 8th June.

  • FYI for anyone who used a Red Energy referral upon signup with them (some folks got one from me but may have also used from other folks).

I've been contacted by one person asking when they'll receive their $50 GC from Red Energy. I hadn't heard or received anything from Red Energy (in terms of referral credits/gc) so checked this link to their 'refer a friend' program (which oddly they still have up but it doesn't generate any referring email?): https://www.redenergy.com.au/referafriend

Cut a long story short - it states the $50 GC should be sent after the new person has their services transferred to Red Energy - but gives no more info.

So I emailed Red Energy this morning asking if they can please clarify this - as soon as I have a reply I'll post up for everyone's benefit. :-)

The real story behind Reamped has come out - I must say, I'm severely disappointed considering they made themselves out to be helping customers.

In May, when the average wholesale price in Queensland jumped to $347 per megawatt hour, two small energy retailers, ASX-listed Local Planning Energy (LPE) and Kiwi-owned ReAmped, told customers they were going to raise their bills so much that households would be better off switching to alternative providers. Average Queensland prices have since increased to more than $490/MWh.

LPE and ReAmped then quietly sold swap agreements, which retailers purchase to protect shareholders and customers against fluctuations in wholesale electricity prices, for up to $100 million, sources familiar with the situation told The Australian Financial Review.

    • I don't understand the implications of that last paragraph, but ReAmped were definitely going to increase prices, regardless of whatever benefit they get from those agreements. So I'm glad I switched.

Btw… I was reading today rates are about to go up again.

  • Here's the response I got from Red Energy about the $50 refer a friend situation - in short I suspect it's just a matter of folks waiting a few more weeks - as likely only goes out once your first monthly bill with Red Energy is fully paid - which I suspect it wouldn't be for anyone yet:

Regarding the refer a friend vouchers, allow me to explain a bit about the program to begin. When a friend or family member signs up with Red Energy, they need to provide your account number to us as the party that referred them. Once the sign up is complete they will transfer to Red, depending on a variety of factors unique to their properties and account, within a number of weeks if not after a couple of months.

Once they are transferred to us and provided you yourself are still a Red Energy customer, which you of course are, a gift voucher will be sent to both you and the friend that yourself.

With that in mind if your friends and yourself are yet to receive the gift vouchers it may be because they are yet to be final billed with their current retailers and transferred across to us at this stage. It may also be that your account details were not provided upon sign up to trigger the friend referral program.

In any event I would recommend each friend you referred that signed up with us contact us individually as we would need to discuss their accounts with them directly. As I’m sure you could understand due to privacy reasons we cannot look into the status or details of any account other than your own with you.

All these plan changes were all pretty pointless as anyone who signed up to a new plan was variable anyway and every single power retailer is now on the default energy offer given by the state.

    • +1

The plans have changed - but if you had gotten in early enough, some providers had no contract fixed rates through to May 2023.

    • +1

who signed up to a new plan was variable anyway

nope, signed up to a fixed plan which were available at the time when ReAmped first warned everyone

      • Ditto.

  • I always keep my word - so finally this morning I received an email from Red Energy stating that they'd received referrals from me for the following names:
    - LAUREN
    - MRINAL
    - ADRIAN
    - CATHERINE

So much thanks to those folks - those are NOT OzB usernames - so I've no idea who they are. But if you believe you used my referral and have not received a $50 email, pls PM me and I'll look into it for us both.

How do you refer friends? I thought you have to know the person's email in advance?

      • These people contacted me saying they were going to sign up to Red for their fixed plan (which was incredibly wise given how thngs played out) - I gave them what they needed to ensure that they got referral credits (as goes to them and me) for when they signed up. :-)

You've been misinformed, you do not need people's email address. :-)

      • Online referrals are usually just a link with a number on the end specific to each existing customer. New customer clicks it, signs up, both get a bonus - usually at the second bill. Sometimes the company will send an email saying "Your friend John signed up, blah, blah." But no surname, email, etc.

  • So now that August has ticket over, for those that decided to stick with Reamped, in Victoria what did your electricity rates jump to?

    • I switched over to their Standard (VDO) plan. Otherwise, it would have been a 100% price increase on the Handshake Plan.

    • I was just reading an email from some site I'm subscribed to, saying energy prices will be going up again soon.

I have just checked the new pricing plan

      https://www.reampedenergy.com.au/plan-information/

and looking at my area, the new rates do not appear to be anywhere as high as what was advised in the email. I am talking to them to switch my plan back to ‘handshake' after switching to VDO.

      • Thats good - but man it would have been BRUTAL for others - here the the last Reamped rates I was on and what they are now:
        ……………….OLD………….CURRENT
        Peak………$0.24…………….$0.52
        Shoulder…$0.18……………..$0.48
        Offpeak…..$0.12……………..$0.39
        CL1………..$0.12……………..$0.36
        Supply…….$1.29……………..$1.97

        Essential Energy distro. Rough eh?

      • These are out of date - I tried switching, and they said all plans are now the same rates as per the 1st August rate rises.
