Howdy,
I've heard that if you Qatar Business Class flight using qantas points you can't book your own seats!
Is this normal, and does anyone have a clever suggestion to workaround this?

Yep, this is how I picked mine for my OWA at the end of this year.
RJ.com is also good for picking seats when QF doesn't let you, but from memory you cant pick the middle seats on QR Q suites planes.
Did you choose the forward or backwards facing seat? The backward facing seat seems to have a better window view but sounds weird facing backwards on the flight!
Always forward for me- backwards feels a bit uncomfortable. You won't be looking out the window the whole time anyway.
You should get a Qatar PNR which you can log onto their website and allocate your seats.
Unless you are flying Q suites and need to select the couple or 4 seats in the middle, you would need to ring up their call centre as those seats are usually blocked off for travellers travelling in pairs or 4s.
Precovid I had booked q suites Doha to aus using qff points,and could select seats. Think I did it through Qatar website using the qantas booking ref.
