Recommendations for a ~14" Laptop

Hi,

I generally use desktop computers but doing some longer travels (several months) later in the year so need to upgrade my laptop so I can work whilst away. I think a 15" or 15.6" laptop would be a bit too big/heavy. Work is mainly general office things (G Suite, Office, Web Based Apps, Websites) with a little photo editing, but I like to open a lot of tabs and software at the same time so I need something powerful enough and also want it to last several years.

Which one of these would you go with (or something else)?

Thanks

    MacBook Air.

If you don't need Windows, a MacBook Air.

If you do, a Lenovo Thinkbook 14p or Ideapad 5 Pro (both very similar).

  • the link for the thinkpad is lower than the price you stated.

  • Thanks for the replies.

    • I am preferring not to go with a Mac. Whilst I realise Mac doesn't slow down as much over time as Windows and they're a good machine, I can't get used to the Operating System and slight keyboard layout. Also I use a non popular software application for work which I think may not work on Mac.

    • I will look at the Lenovo Thinkbook 14p & Ideapad 5 Pro

    • The Thinkpad link I gave was the entry level one. I think I customised it to match the recent $1233 ozbargain deal (eg. upgrading to 16gb ram etc) which ended up more expensive. But maybe I didn't add the "MAYHEM22" coupon (I'm not sure if it was eligible) I see there are also Thinkpad T14's which may be a better deal.

The Dell Inspiron 14 5425 Laptop AMD Ryzen™ 7 5825U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win 11 deal does seem really good. Are the Inspiron's really that bad?

    At last.. a new topic.

  • The Intel NUC M15 that has been on sale here a few times is really good. It is a 15 inch monitor but the form factor is very slim that it doesn't feel that big. I bought one recently when it was on sale with MWave. The battery life is quoted at being about 13 hours. The screen is very bright. The processor has excellent single core performance and has 16gb of ram. I use it as a teacher and I often have dozens of tabs open in Chrome - so lots of my memory is getting used. Ive yet to have any issues with lag or slow loading times. Price is about the same as the Inspiron but far better build quality.

  • Switch to Mac. I use some Windows only software on my mac using Parallels Desktop. I have a Lenovo laptop running windows10 with a SSD. It's taking around 10mn for the PC to be ready to open any file explorer window. While the Mac opens it right after the desktop screen is displayed. The Macbook with Parallels Desktop running a windows 10 is much faster than my Lenovo!! If I can, I avoid using my windows Lenovo PC as much as possible. Windows has become a really big piece of sh** software. You will get used to MacOS quickly and you will be amazed by the performance of the OS. Look at the new 14" Macbook Pro with M1 Pro chip.
