How to Rivet This Joint on a Bag

Halp!!!111

I need to fix this joint. I tried searching on the interweb but I do not know what things are called so my search is rather futile.
Please give me some pointers or keywords for me to search

these 2 images are of the joint

    A "riveter" or "rivet gun".

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/tools/hand-tools/staple…

Doesn't make sense to buy for a one-off, might want to ask some local alternations/dry cleaning places if they'll do it for you for a nominal fee.

    • You could give the Craftright or Trojan ones a crack - even if they only last for that one rivet, it'd be cheaper than getting a 3rd party to fix it.

      • thanks! for $20 I will give it a shot myself

These are tools for Pop riveting.
The rivet shown is not a pop rivet and I doubt that a Pop Rivet would even work in this setting. Even if it does, it's not going to look very good or work for very long.

        • You make a good point. i am just going to try a few different ways. I mean, there is a reason why the rivet came apart in the first place. they probably didnt use suitable rivets in the first place. It came apart on both side of the bag.

@BuyoTheCat: maybe pop rivet and some large diameter washers

or a short bolt and dome nut might look a bit neater and be more durable.

Yeah. Nah. That's not going to do it.

Easiest way is with a nut and bolt. Or search eBay or similar for 'Belt Screw Leather Craft Chicago Nail Brass Rivets Stud Head Wallet Round', and order from Australia, not overseas.

    • thanks. I did an ebay search. that was helpful

Go to one of those shoe polish/repair places in shopping centres. They should be able to help.

    • Best idea yet.

You can get sets of leather rivets along with a setter and anvil on Amazon for around the $20 mark and I'm sure other places as well. Alternatively you could use a chicago screw. Is that a joint of some kind that's meant to use the rivet as a pivot? If so don't use a sheet metal rivet (in fact don't use this even if it doesn't pivot) as you need something with a little play so it can move and a chicago screw would be the easiest for this. Might want to add a really tiny drop of blue thread lock to stop it coming undone by itself.

    • I was looking at what gbak17 suggested.
I with locktite it might work. the rivet is for a hinge that is the opening of a bag.

  • As Above any Shoe Repair Place will fix for you. You can buy those Press Studs as a replacement but you need a little special anvil to set them. Unless you are doing many projects it's not worth it.

  • Reassemble rivet through the leather.
Get someone to hold it tight at one edge with a pair of pliers.

Then position a screw into the small hole in the rivet.
Tap/hit it with a hammer to widen the hole and spread the head of the rivet out.

Once widened, position the bolt you've used to temporarily hold the joint together over the top of the rivet and give the hammer a harder tap or even a whack to flatten out the rivet.

  • If you're sneaky you can use the rivet gun in Bunnings without ever leaving the store!

  • Another op who cannot use Google and/or youtube….

    • Searching without knowing terms and keywords is hard.

      • Very very simple terms:
        bag rivet

        • u forgot please

  • Zip (Cable) Ties are the universal fixer of all things.

    • nah
super glue/duct tape and wd 40

stops what moves and moves what stops

A "Binding Screw" aka "Chicago Screw" might be the go:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p238005…

You could probably get them from craft shops, maybe Spotlight, or such..

Edit: it looks like they're also called "Interscrews"

Double cap rivet is what you're after, that's what the broken part is. Can buy sets from Amazon that come with the tool to set them. Link

    • Thanks for the info. The fact that the rivet has come off indicates that it might not be the best way to do this.

I will try the Chicago screws and see how that goes.
I was given the bag and the person who gave it to be said that he got it repaired before at a shoe repair place.

  • You do realise that the dogs will still be able to smell the joint even if it’s concealed?

    • Must be golden retrievers. always looking to get stoned
