Using a security key as a form of two-factor authentication is a simple and proven method for locking down your accounts and keeping them secure.

The Security Key NFC is FIDO and FIDO2 certified. It works with Google Chrome or any FIDO-compliant application on Windows, Mac OS or Linux and with applications that provide FIDO or FIDO2 support through Chrome, Firefox, or Edge browsers.

Strong Authentication
The Security Key Series offers superior security by combining hardware-based authentication and public key cryptography to effectively defend against phishing attacks and eliminate account takeovers. It offers support for FIDO U2F and FIDO 2.

Passwordless Enabled
The Security Key Series helps organizations accelerate to a passwordless future by providing support for the FIDO2 protocol. FIDO2 supports not only today's two-factor authentication but also paves the way for eliminating weak password authentication, with strong single factor hardware-based authentication.

Easy, Fast and Reliable
The Security Key Series provides a simple and intuitive authentication experience that users find easy to use, ensuring rapid adoption and organizational security. With authentication speeds up to 4X faster than OTP or SMS based authentication, security keys do not require a battery or network connectivity, making authentication always accessible.

Reduce IT Operational Costs
The ease of use and reliability of security keys is proven to reduce password support incidents by 92%. This was documented in a research paper by Google, describing the Google employee rollout to more than 70 countries.

Modern Authentication from the Industry Leader
The YubiKey is the trusted secure authentication choice for the largest technology, finance, and retail companies in the world. Seems like cool tech, but I don't see the purpose?
I already use 2FA on my Android using Google Auth or Authy for all apps that support it (which is almost everything)

Its for those that want an even higher level of authentication/security than a software or service based 2FA

this is physical hardware auth key though

    • I have a yubikey for work. Its really convenient since you dont need to pull your phone our every time to authenticate.
Not a big overhead, but its nice to not having to mess around with a separate device

      • I have a yubikey for work. Its really convenient since you dont need to pull your phone our every time to authenticate.

But you still need to pull your yubikey out so what is the point?

Also people carry their phones all the time and likely to use it alot of the time.. and more careful about not leaving it behind.

But yubikey is a separate device you need to bring with you now.. vs carrying just a phone..

If you work at a single desk in a low security environment then this probably isn't the product for you.

Many people want them for added security, low signal environments, or because they don't want to use cloud services because of privacy. These qre very common in IT.

        • I use the really tiny one. Just leave it in all the time

I dont know anything about security so will defer to the others. I'm just saying Ive found it really convenient.

Agreed that the deal one is a bit more bulky. But if you work at home, would assume you would just leave it in too

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • $48.90 here, was shown in similiay items

  • Inspired curiosity.
Is this key suitable to do seamless locking/unlocking of a Windows encrypted folder eg the Documents folder?
If key is detected then folder gets unlocked, either (preferably) automagically or, with a touch. If no key plugged in, then the folder remains fully encrypted and files are safe from prying eyes in case of theft of laptop or even PC.

I realise the key in itself has no ability to encrypt and will require either Windows or a 3rd party encryption software. Ideas if the latter?

    • you trying to hide some dirty pics/videos from someone?

    • No not really. The better models (this blue one is most basic) support smart card logins which can provide more security than a basic password unlock of encrypted drives for Bitlocker and Veracrypt, but that's still a pain.

      • Hmmm, it does seem that the passwordless authentication 2FA/FIDO stuff is focused more towards website logins and hasn't found its way yet to PC data protection. Windows 12 maybe?

        • There still really needs to be a password/pin or at least biometrics since a key alone is quite poor security, too easy for anyone in the office or home to abuse an unattended key. Keys will usually be in the laptop bag etc.
Online hacks, the Russian hacker never has your physical key so it works great.
Physical access logins, in most cases they will have the key.

Computers really need improved hardware chips to enforce security, what software alone can do is very limited.
Microsoft has struggled just with their attempts to force the industry to support TPM chip features for Win11, but hopefully that does trigger a new era of CPU and drives featuring better inbuilt features.
