Troubleshooting Fault with Chromecast and Sony TV

Hey guys, I'm hoping you guys might be able to suggest some troubleshooting for me. Google has been unable to help.

Chromecast with Google TV and a fairly expensive Sony Bravia that is about 7 years old.

After approximately 10 minutes of use with the Chromecast my TV and Chromecast turn off.

I've tried:
- multiple Chromecasts.
- multiple power points.
- removing batteries from remotes to ensure the remotes aren't the cause.
- multiple HDMI ports.
- factory reset and updated both Chromecasts
- it's definitely not an Eco/auto off setting on the TV or CC.

The only other thing I plan to try is totally deactivating CEC functionality.

Only when the Chromecast is removed completely, the TV will stay on.

Even if I'm using a different HDMI port (PC) with the Chromecast in another port the TV will still turn off.

I'm at my wits end and thinking of getting a nvidia shield for this TV but it's really not in the budget.

Thanks guys.

  • Check your auto-shutoff settings (sometimes called Eco), maybe it's set to turn off TV and doesn't recognise Chromecast to stay on for some reason.

    Update Sony TV firmware.

    Update Chromecast firmware.

Replace Chromecast with another one to see if it does the same thing.

    • Thanks hybrid.
I forgot some things and I'll update the post.

The Sony TV is definitely not Eco turning off. I use that setting and it's set to 4hrs.

      Ive tried multiple chromecasts already.
I've also reset and updated both chromecasts.

I'll check the TV for updates this afternoon.

      Cheers

  • Do you have HDMI CEC settings on your TV? Does the issue still occur if you disable all the CEC settings (so other devices can't control your tv or on/off). Sorry, I see it says you will try that, deff do and see if any difference.

    • Thanks I just thought of it talking to my family today.
If that doesn't so it I don't know what will.

      • CEC would be the only way it could communicate with your TV AFAIK that could affect off/on. If you find its not that, it will likely be some electrical issue. For example, Chromecast is powered by TV USB and its surging, or the surge protector is flipping. I guess it could also be the chromecast remote if its set up that way, had the issue once where it was in a couch pocket, and when people would move it would hit the off button.

  • Are you using the original power supply ?
Do you have any other attachments added tot he Chromecast? EG usb hub
What WIFI frequency do you have it set to? 2.4ghz or 5ghz ?
Have you tried to set Energy Saver to never? On the Chromecast. Settings/ System/ Energy saver to NEVER

    • Original power supply

      No other attachments

It's on 5.0ghz I believe but I'll need to check.

I haven't checked saver for chromecast only the TV.

      Thank you

      • 5ghs can be unstable. Its faster but weaker, I read reports early on that the connection can drop possibly causing it to go to sleep
Try the 2,4hz even if its just for the test. but understand , with smart home and those kind of devices, all wifi should be on same frequency or they wont work properly like casting or voice commands

  • Did you train the chrome cast to your tv? Maybee one of the IR codes are wrong on the model you trained the remote to. Try removing all it remote trained devices ie Amplifier/ TV.

  • Unplug all HDMI cables except the Chromecast. See if other devices are triggering

  • How are you powering the chromecast?

    • from the supplied power adapter into powerpoint.

      • Hmm. I thought it might have been plugged into the TV's usb which isn't good.

        Maybe, try this?
Also, if you have the new Chromecast with Google TV (the oblong one with a remote), there is a timeout in the settings (top right corner of your TV screen). That turns off the Chromecast after it's been sitting in Ambient Mode for a while. You can increase that by going to the settings.

        • Thanks, it is a Chromecast with Google TV and never is selected for that setting.
          Cheers

I had heaps of problem with Sony's HDMI CEC implementation, even when I had CEC disabled on a Portal device it used to cause the TV to crash as it was trying to negotiate audio passthrough about 10-20 seconds after bootup. The Sony TV was about 7-8 years old, too, and had both the Portal and a Google TV with Chromecast attached.

Ended up using one of these and all my problems went away: https://www.amazon.com.au/LINDY-HDMI-CEC-Less-Adapter-Female… https://www.lindy.com.au/hdmi-non-cec-female-male-adapter. Was more or less next day delivery. Yes, you lose CEC on the Google TV however was cheaper than buying a new TV.

You can always make one by blocking a PIN on a HDMI cable (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/hdmi-pin-13-remove.2547497/) however the adaptor was a small price to pay to stop the Sony insanity.

Thanks mate, that's brilliant, thankfully it looks like i can turn off CEC on the CC

      • One thing I found, even if I disabled CEC on my devices, the Sony still got confused. Was so damn frustrating. No idea why, unless it's a buggy implementation of BraviaLink/CEC on the Sony and/or the devices themselves. Amazon does offer free returns if you have Prime, maybe try the Lindy from Amazon and return it if it doesn't resolve your issue?

Thanks BDL, I'll try that, cheers
