I’m looking for a recommendation for an electric scooter for an adult.
Preferably ok on a dirt or gravel path.
Fast enough to keep up with kids riding their bikes.
Would there be any options under $1000 or not too much over?

Nope
.
Magic 8 Ball says,"Maybe."
Technically your body is powered by electricity, so maybe this person could just get a bike or a regular push scooter to keep up with their children

My time to shine! I know plenty about electric scooters. When it comes to offroad there's two things you need - suspension to handle the bumps and terrain and dual motor to be able to handle hills. The problem is you're not going to get anything suitable for $1000 but if you set your budget to $2000 there's some really good choices.
Namely the Bolzzen Commando for $1899 and Dragon Cyclone Pro for $1699. Both are preorder at the moment and I'd recommend the Cyclone Pro as it feels more sturdy, stem feels stronger, more power and more torque. See the comparison below.
I have a higher end scooter similar to the Cyclone Pro with a slightly larger battery and I can get up to 50km range out of it with a combination of hills, dual motor and speeds up to 50km.

Thank you.
The dragon one could be a possibility. It’s not too much over.
Thanks.
Tubeless tyres sounds good too. No pumping and no punctures.
If you had a bit more to spend what others would you recommend?
The next bracket would be the $2000-$3000 range and it's quite limited as you're looking at 52V or 60V at <23Ah.
For $2300 you can get the Dragon Raptor Pro which has a 52V/23Ah LG battery and a more polished version of the Cyclone Pro. It's a rebrand of the VDM-10 scooter and very comfortable to ride. Bolzzen have their own version of the VDM-10 called the Gladiator with a larger battery at 60V/21Ah plus some changes with the frame for $2800.
The Kaabo Mantis variants are good and I've rode on of their older models. Definitely a lot of power and the handling was good. Plus you get better 60V batteries with these
Are LG worth the big price hike over yum cha lithiums (dont really need the range)? Haha I can see you can get the VDM-10s directly from alibaba
@runtoparadise: They're certainly going to be more reliable. The thing with the advertised range is that they base it around something like '70kg person travelling at 20km/h on flat terrain' so you need to assume the range will be less.
Unicool is one of the big scooter manufacturers and you can buy direct from Alibaba. It'll just take a few months to arrive and no warranty.
@Clear: And have to order min 2 from alibaba! ACL warranty definitely makes Australian warranty something worth its while.
@runtoparadise: There's plenty of rebrands available locally. Carbon Oxy 10, E-Glide Mach 10 and Apollo Ghost to name a few. Batteries and colours are the main difference.
@Clear: Dragon Raptor/Pro you first linked seems best value of the locals.
@runtoparadise: Yep I own the Pro and it's a really comfortable ride.
What are the factors that go into picking a scooter over ebike for a commute to work?
I realise this may differ from person to person but you seem to be a reasonable person @clear
I've never tried out an ebike before so I really can't comment too much on how they compare.
Would there be any options under $1000 or not too much over?
No
Yep
