eBook on Plane

Can you read a downloaded book on your iPhone while the plane is descending, taxiing etc?
No flight attendant ever asked me to close my paperback during this part of flight.
Prefer normal book but read my first eBook and enjoyed some advantages.
Thx

Yes you can read, watch movies, listen music, go through photos, whatever you want as long as it's in flight safe mode.

It's more about your attention rather than the device.

No. It will make the plane fall from the sky and you will be held liable to the deceased passengers families.

But wouldn't OP be dead too?

OP is sitting in the back. Have you ever seen a plane reverse into a mountain?

No, they are meant to be secured for takeoff and landing - https://www.casa.gov.au/operations-safety-and-travel/travel-…

Granted, this is probably more because it'll hit you in the face if it's a bumpy take off or landing.

during the recent flight on virgin to Melbourne

    • small hand held devices (phones and ipads) could be used during take off and landing, but had to be on air plane mode
    • large ones (laptops) has to be placed in the compartments or under the seat during take off and landing
    • if you drop your phone on the ground or in the seat, please request the air personal (sorry forgot what was the PC term to use) to assist and do not move or recline the seat
    • remember this is a non smoking flight, the toilets are fitted with smoke detectors and that incudes e cigarettes'
    • please sit back and enjoy the flight!

Phone is Ok. Large Devices like Laptops are not. On a recent Virgin flight no issues with holding my iPad.

  • I am a avid reader and since using an e-book reader (Amazon Kindle in my case) instead of a tablet or phone on my flights, I have always been allowed to keep it on during all phases of the flight (airplane mode on all the time to save battery life anyway) while people using the phones were asked to turn it off. An e-book reader is much more accepted and does not catch the attention of the flight crew or fellow passengers.
