Already have a phone … and a camera can be used by anyone in the family… not just me
Rx100m6 when it goes on special then.
IMO unless the zoom is necessary I'd look at the m4 to save a few dollars. The actual photo quality didn't really improve much between then, it was mainly a focus on video enhancements. The M7 has some nice tracking features though.
The G7X M2 or M3 is the other good option, bit cheaper and the photos straight off the camera tend to be a bit nicer IMO. I have a G7X m2 and it's what I take to family events and such if I don't want to haul the DSLR, the digic processor is really quite good.
@freefall101: The tracking on the mk7 looks amazing
How much zoom are you after?
Do you want ultra wide?
Will it be used in low light conditions frequently?low Light- generally not
ultra wide - generally not
Zoom- the best possible within the price and size range
they're all going to be more or less the same at that price point, just go into a shop that sells them and take a look. you don't need to think too hard about this.
Anything under $1k isn't much better than phones, so kind of pointless … Need a micro four thirds/APS-C sensor to get better than phones computational images :/
you can sometimes find the Fujifilm X-E4 on sale under $1000, but that's usually without a lens. On sale you can find it bundled with the 27mm WR (40mm equivalent) which I reckon is probably the sharpest Fuji lens I own. It's also a super small/lightweight combo that takes incredible photos. The 26MP Fuji sensor is great.
The other option is you can probably find a secondhand X-E3 with the same lens for under $1000. Yet another option is the E-M10 iv which hasn't dropped enough to get it with lens for under $1000 (at least that I've seen) but you can regularly find good deals on the E-M10 iii, but personally I HATE that they changed it so that you can only use electronic shutter in silent mode.
The E-M10 ii, however, is still a great camera and you can pick them up secondhand for pretty cheap. Get the 14-42 pancake and you've got plenty of money left over. You should be able to get E-M10ii, 14-42mm, 25mm f1.8 (50mm equivalent) AND the 45mm f1.8 (amazing portrait lens) for under $1000 if you scour marketplace/eBay.
If you only have $1000 then I think the secondhand E-M10ii kit above is your best bet. Worst case you can resell it or trade it without taking too much damage to the hip pocket if you decide it's just not cutting the mustard.
Here are the prices I got when I traded in my Olympus kit at Teds (I jumped ship to Fujifilm):
E-M10ii: $200
14-42mm: $50
25mm: $200
45mm: $200If you can find them secondhand for marginally more then think of it as a cheap rental if you change your mind later on
EDIT: Just saw you want a decent zoom. E-M10ii with the 14-150mm is your best bet IMHO. That lens is super small and lightweight while still delivering good image quality and a very respectable zoom range
The Olympus E-M10 Mark II or III (400-450 new) with 14-150mm is a good reccomendation. That would give OP a lot of range. If OP is just interested in just your average range (i.e. about as far as the telephoto end of iPhone) then the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 would be a lot brighter and another bump in quality (but you'd probably have to source this second hand or bundled used) (that's actually what I have and I'm pretty happy with it).
Oh and one point for OP. When you buy into a camera system, while the initial outlay is $1k, if you want to upgrade - get better lenses or a new camera body - it kinda needs to be within the same camera system (e.g. Olympus/Fuji/Canon EF/Canon EF-M/Canon RF). If you don't want to bother with that, i.e. just want a small point and shoot camera, a recommendation I can give is for the Sony ZV-1. It's basically a RX100 V that's cheaper with the same lens but with less physical controls. It's great because the autofocus on that is really, really good (so you don't need any more controls than those given). The range however is only 24-70 (similar to iPhone).
I have the first generation Sony RX100 and they are a great little point and shoot camera. Plenty of things you can adjust on them and when you shoot in RAW It will turn off most of the post-processing so you get full reign of it in the editing stage.
Rx100 is probably your best bet for non-bulky, just have to decide which generation to buy :) makes for the perfect travel camera.
Looks like OM systems Australia has launched a refurbished store. You can get an E-M10iv with the 14-150 for under $1200 which isn't far off your limit.
That would be a great combo for you imho
Okay so concise list from above - looks like:
sony Rx100m6
Olympus E-M10 Mark III +lens
Sony ZV-1
Fujifilm X-E4
E-M10 iv/ iii
G7X M3
(versions can vary )
You might as well get an s22 if that’s the standard of quality you’re after. Easily under 1k and you know.. has other functions other than camera.
Beat camera is the one you have with you.
I have an rx1000mk6 and still rather just use my iPhone 12 Pro lmao
