I get the retro cool, especially since this is smack bang in the middle of the first generation of consoles that Millennials are nostalgic for. But holy cow, 70 bucks for the worst-designed 1st party in console gaming history…

    • +11

Plus no hope of bringing back GoldenEye, at least that would be the reason I got one!

      • +3

Honestly? Going back and playing Goldeneye with the benefit of hindsight, and with the benefit of not being rich enough to own an N64 at the time so being inblided by nostalgia goggles… It's just an okay game. Decent, but it benefited more from being the only good multiplayer shooter on the N64. It won by default, rather than because it was a hugely amazing game.

        • +5

I think it was definitely exceptional at the time. But unlike, say, the other big N64 classics like the Mario or Zelda games from that era, it hasn't aged as well. Not much point revisiting in 2022.

          • +4

@ItsMeAgro: In 2022 you can revisit with mods - there's a remake in farcry 5 and at least the facility level in Half Life Alyx, get the nostalgia with modern gameplay

            • +2

@whiskeyjack89: Why would you want modern gameplay if you're not a modern gamer, eh eh? See that's nostalgia,I want to play the thing I played back in the day

        • -2

No one could have said it better. I never understood the hype and could never put my thoughts across with sounding anti Nintendo.

          Well done sir!

        • +7

Perfect Dark was way better as a indirect sequel, still holds up and remains overlooked by most.

          • @aimbotjesus: Agree that Perfect Dark was better but didn't really get the same cult following. No surprise that old FPS like this are so hard to go back to, it's a miracle we ever managed to shoot anything at all.

          • +2

@aimbotjesus: I've never understood this, my mates and I back in primary school were hyped for Perfect Dark for months before of came out and when it did it exceeded every expectation. We absolutely smashed that game, the sheer breadth of the multiplayer was amazing, particularly the number of weapons available and the fact they all had secondary functions.

Perfect Dark, Halo, and CoD4 were our three most played multiplayer shooters by far back in the day, and all three are worth revisiting.

            • @diamondd: No Counterstrike?

            • @diamondd: Replace Cod 4 with Cod World at War and you have my group. Fun times as a teen/early 20's something.

            • @diamondd: I have a feeling it's an age thing. By the time PD came out I was like 16. Were you younger when PD came out?

        • I still enjoy going back through Goldeneye and completing the single player campaign every couple years, but multiplayer didn't age well at all. It's a blurry mess unless played on a CRT, even with all the upscalers, direct HDMI mods available it's just not that nice by today's standards.

        • +2

There's a leak of the Xbox Live Arcade port floating around, which plays in the Xenia (Xbox 360) emulator.
Much better than the N64 version.

          • @idonotknowwhy: does it play better?

            • +1

@bailbondsh: Yeah, it has modern fps controls with 2 analogue sticks. I used a Dual Sense controller. You can use any controller which works on your PC, eg. Xbox 360/One PS4/5 WiiU/Switch Pro.

              It runs at 60fps.

It even has the thing like in Halo Aniversary where you can toggle between old and new graphics.

        • its because you can screen cheat.

        • +3

Maybe it's nostalgia but I would argue that for the time it was ground breaking. Most fps games were just kill everything, find the key, and move on to the next level with 2d sprites (quake excluded). Goldeneye had unique and varied missions/objectives that could be played differently (ie kill everyone or 00 agent stealth style), full 3d models, AI that reacted appropriately, and the multiplayer that was as easy and plug in another controller and go.

        • +4

You're missing the fact that it was the first true 3D FPS on console and with analogue control. That in itself is what made it amazing.. It was evolution being witnessed. I'm guessing you were a little too young to understand those things about gaming at the time if you were even old enough.

          • @Justin9mm: Yeah no, I'm exactly the age that the game was released for.

Being first doesn't make it the definitive example. Wolfenstein pre-dated DOOM, but nobody called first-person shooters "Wolfenstein Clones"

Like I said, part of the reason its so beloved is because anyone who only had an N64 had to have Goldeneye.

I never said it was a bad game. It's fine. Plays fine, fun enough. But outside of hardcore Nintendo fans, there's not a huge fan community keeping the game alive like other shooters of the era like DOOM or Half-life

        • speed running the game is fun

      • +2

They got banjo-kazzoie, never say never

    • The Duke says hello

    • Never had a problem with the controller. Forget how much they used to cost though

  • Do I need this even though I have the pro controller?

    • +5

Nope, unless you're super nostalgic for the only controller that has a worse reputation for broken joysticks than the Joycons themselves.

    • +5

I grew up with the N64 so it was a must when playing the NSO N64 Games

You can also use it to play the Switch port of Mario 64 and the Turok games for that original authentic feel.

But if you have money to burn then why not?

  • quite possibly the most difficult controller I've ever laid hands on

    • +18

Were you using all three of your hands?

      • Wait you're supposed to use your hands?

  • +2

On the flipside - it can be used as a Boomerang :)

  • +15

I wonder how many people here complaining have used the controller for an extended period. It's legit not one of the worst controllers around. The stick does degrade faster than any other modern sticks, but it's not too bad with reasonable care (my OG N64 controllers are still usable).
This is, all-up, a really good way of getting a wireless N64 controller for Switch, or 'alternative', N64 gameplay.

    • +3

Also noteworthy that they were going on ebay for 2-3x the retail price recently.

    • +3

I've been using my NSO N64 controller for 3-4 months now without problems. Actually my original Gold N64 controller from when I was a kid still works without problems.

I think some people really abuse the joysticks and to treat them with care.
I've seen mates flick and rotate it with so much force or throw their controllers across the room onto the table/couch after use.

Its like with my joy cons and pro controller where people complain of drift issues but mine are fine after a few years still.

      • +8

I think some people really abuse the joysticks and to treat them with care.

Some people were just very determined to win at Mario Party's Tug o' War.

        • +2

So the issue why the controller fails is dependent on what game you play LOL

          • @SpeedRunnerLink: I knew quite a few people with scratched up touch screens on their DS because they were very enthusiastic when playing the Pokémon Ranger series. Some games just cause people to get pretty rough with their controllers/handhelds due to how the gameplay works.

            • @Altashi: It's a wear and tear item so it's bound to happen.

Bluetooth earbuds will be useless once the battery dies and smart phones too..

So this applies to controllers which get a lot more abuse and yet people expect it to last forever.

          • +1

@SpeedRunnerLink: It definitely is the case with some games contributing to far more wear.

The Mario Party games (especially tug-of-war and the fishing ones) you'd put your palm on the stick and revolve the stick around like crazy, essentially grinding the stick down like a mortar and pestle.
Even drifting in Mario Kart where you slam the stick left and right to get the boost would definitely wear it out quicker than just running around in Mario 64.

Even with say the Dualshock 3, I'd noticed the plastic surrounding the left analogue stick was slightly indented at the 90° and 270° due to ~50h worth of slamming the stick left and right doing barrel roll boosts in Wipeout HD, whereas normally you'd get minimal wear in most games.

            • +1

              @Pandaroo: I dont disagree.

But people keep thinking joysticks dont fail. It's like with a car the gear stick bushes and clutch will wear over time too.

I mean I understand the N64 controller had its flaws but remember it was the first of its kind and Nintendo is always trying to innovate.

              • @SpeedRunnerLink: Great analogy.
I agree it was ground breaking at the time and I love the controller personally.

    • N64 controller is the only controller i have ever used that has given me a callus on my thumb - that thumbstick was the worst.

    • I remember back in the day, there was always arguments between me and siblings/friends over who got to play with what controller because the the thumbstick would degrade so much. I literally used to hide away the newest controller so I would have an advantage. Within about 20 seconds of using a control pad you could tell whether it was old or new.

Never had that problem with any other consoles control pads.

  • +10

Controller available for purchase with any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Hiding hardware behind a subscription paywall is pretty gross, even for Nintendo.

    • +2

Well, it's kinda used for the Nintendo Switch Online games…..

      • +1

It also works on other games, not just Switch Online ……………

        • Such as..?

          • @SydStrand: Ones I have tried and work well so far are Mario 64 Port (Mario 3D all stars), Turok 1 and 2 (change the control mapping to Southpaw so the C buttons work as originally).

But you can use the controller for any other game but will need some remapping however some games aren't playable on the N64 controller.

    • +2

To be fair, these controllers have been out of stock since launch. Putting it behind a pay wall until people with NSO players can get their hands on it seems reasonable

    • +3

I think they did it to minimise scalping.

    • I just got a month subscription to try it out the online $6, so didn't really mind. They give you the extra free 7 day trial also if you start with that. So 37 days.

  • +2

Wish I didn't need to be a member

    • Just sign up to the cheapest one

      • +1

yep i did, $6 plus a free trial = 37 days. Want to try out the online deal anyway, so it's reasonable

  • +25

To those saying the original controller was the worst ever - at the time, it had everything: analogue stick, triggers, rumble, memory card, a fully ergonomic shape - before that, controllers were just flat with a d-pad and 3 buttons.

They literally invented the analogue stick, and even with the flaws, I reckon it's way better than just about any other groundbreaking gaming invention. FWIW, the 3-handed design was excellent as it meant games not yet designed for the analogue stick didn't have you holding your hand in some uncomfortable way just to reach the d-pad. Trust me, it could have been a LOT worse.

    • Damned if you damned if you don't.

    • People so mad that I want a set of 4 but gave a few to my friends 😂😂😂

  • +3

The N64 controller was created to cater to a transitioning market between games that used the d-pad (eg. 2D platformers, and a bunch of other games) and games that used the analogue stick (eg. upcoming 3D platformers).

It's not uncomfortable if you use it as intended, which is that:

    • If you're playing a game that utilises the analogue stick, your left hand should be on the middle 'prong' and controller held at a slight angle.
    • If you're playing a game that utilises the d-pad, your left hand should be on the left 'prong'.

    ie: https://www.denofgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/N64-Con…

If you're playing a game that utilises both for different functions, you switch whenever you need to. But in a lot of 3D platformers like Zelda OOT and Mario 64, the d-pad had no function, so it's not an issue.

Also restocked is the SNES controller. Given they are $40 and I’ve been wanting one for a while, grabbed two very quickly.
You can also get a pair of NES controllers for $80, and a MD controller (3 button variety though 😢) for $70

    • 6 button megadrive is the dream, or a Saturn controller would be lovely too

      • I use the 8bitdo M30's… although, while pairing with the Switch is possible, it's not smooth enough for wife or guests to just click and go.

The 8bitdo USB adapter is the other option too

    • Uhh I just checked and it says 'Out of stock'. Jeez, you must have grabbed the last two.

      • Oh crap, sorry. I just got my shipped email notification too

    • +1

I've been trying to find the 6 button one from Japan but they are inflated like crazy in price on the used market

    • Just got one. Pretty sure they can be used on PC aswell!

  • +1

Thanks, missed out last time they were in stock.

  • I think for collectors is perfect. If you want to just play games. There should have better options.

  • Is this USB, wireless or original n64 plug?

  • +2

Grabbed a couple. Knew they'd come back in stock eventually!

  • +1

    Got 2! Cheers

  • +4

D-Pad on this is better than the switch pro, and WAY better than the joycons.

  • +1

Thanks OP got 1 + Nintendo rewards

  • +3

FYI - these controllers work on PC so they are great for emulators even if you don't have a Switch. You can connect them via wireless bluetooth if you have a Motherboard with bluetooth already on it, or if you buy a cheap usb bluetooth adapter.

N64 emulation is very good now, and has improved accuracy compared to the official emulator used on the Switch. The best way to play these on pc is on Retroarch using the Mupen64 core with the parallel64 plugin selected.

  • I'd most like the original wired purple models that came with the Gamecube re-released. They can be attached through a reasonably-priced adapter, like the Smash gamecube controllers they released. I bought both for less than the cost of this, but this was some years ago.

  • No goldeneye, no deal !

  • Any speedrunners tried these? Curious to know what the precision and durability are like.

Did they make the stick and bowl out of plastic again or have they solved the degradation issue somehow? What about the gears?

  • Bit of a bugger there's only 4 per account. I bought some last time for presents, thought I'd get some for myself this time round but nope lol, I'm maxed apparently.

    • Could you make another account and throw a month of NSO on there? Might be worth it considering the scalper prices. Not sure if its locked to 4 per address or not.

      • All good, had a friend who allowed me to buy one on their account :) Thanks for the suggestion though!

    • -2

I commented that earlier as I’m in the same boat, but have 8 downvotes for some reason 🤷🏽 It does suck though as I’d like a set of 4 for myself!

  • +2

If you wanted to play 4 player golden eye it would be 4 x 69.95 = $279.80 🫣

  • This is still in-stock

    • All out for me. Hopefully they get these and the SNES controllers back in stock. Just want one of each.

      • It is now - however, it wasn't when I posted.

  • Far out I've been waiting months for these and I missed it.

  • How Nintendo can go out of stock on their own controllers is beyond my comprehension

    • +6

Many suppliers is out of stock on items or on back order every now and then that rely heavily on China.
In case you weren't aware manufacturing has been impacted especially in China due to COVID and lockdowns.

Other companies have had many delays in stock supply like the Sony Playstation 5, Rolex watches, supply of new cars, etc etc.

    • probably scalpers, watch these come out for $200 + on fb marketplace, ebay etc

      • They already have.

But I have many friends who have bought 4 because they want to play a lot of 4 player games with it.

Some nut job even has it up for $500

        • +1

people just need to get over the 'i need it now' mentality and just not support scalpers

these will come back in stock, and anyone who actually pays someone $500 for whats basically a $20 controller, deserves to be ripped off.
