Citibank Vs ING for Japan

Hi guys, looking for a debit card to use while in Japan and wondering whether to get an ING everyday or a citibank plus card. Does one of them offer better rates?
I understand with ING i can just deposit $1000 that month and make 5 transactions.

Cheers

Look in to Macquarie's transaction account. No minimum deposit requirements, fee free international purchases and no international ATM fees either.

This is nice but not really that great as its not the only bank that doesn't charge international ATM fees, most of the fees come from the ATM itself which Macquarie won't cover.

When I was in Japan most of the ATM's charged fees, which wasn't a problem as I had ING without the current limitations at the time.

I'm sure you could just go to the specific ATM in japan so you don't get charged fees but I never found it practical due to how busy Japan was and how cash reliant they were, when I needed it I needed it quickly and there are many areas where there just isn't many ATM options.

  • When is Japan open?

    • It is open now.

      • I thought it was only opening for strict guided tours for tourist visas?

      Opens at 9am. Closes 5pm.

      • Is KFC open?

          Did someone say KFC?

  • ING is a winner for rebating Foreign ATM owners transactions fees, unfortunately this now has a limit of 5 (per month).

Japan was still very cash centric when I visited in 2019.

I used Up Bank primarily (day to day transaction account anyway(, while using ING for fee free atm withdrawals. Had Macquarie/Citi as a backup.

  • Just remember when withdrawing to go to a convenience store. Lawsons have a minimum withdraw amount of 10,000 while 7/11 allow less.

  • Can you still get a Citibank plus? NAB just bought Citibank's Aus business so not sure if they will be available for long.

  • Granted I haven't been to Japan since 2016, but back then cash was king.

No, IIRC, you have to do this the month before in order to have benefits this month.

The best thing about ING is that they rebate ATM fees up to 5 times a month.
I just looked at my statements when I was last there to check how much they've charged as ATM fees, seems like around $2-$5 per transaction, depending on the ATM

I mostly use convenience store ATMs, maybe you can find better ones that do not charge you ATM fees.
