    Bought one! thanks

  • I'm guessing the RAM is not upgradeable on this model?

    • +1

its soldered on unfortunately. you can replace the ssd, but it's in a niche form factor you'd spend way too much for it.

      • you can replace the ssd, but it's in a niche form factor you'd spend way too much for it.

It costs more than a regular M.2 but it's not that expensive. It's a standard M.2 2230 drive.

        512GB is $139
        1TB is $310

        • +13

$310 for a second hand 1TB SSD is pretty expensive in my books

          • @FireRunner: yeah, exactly my "spending way too much for it" point. the only reason i can think of having this 'replaceable' feature was MS came under a lot of criticism on non replaceable parts. especially for SSDs that will wear over time, on the lower RAM models due to swaps.

they sure didn't pick a cheaper form factor.

            • @slowmo:

especially for SSDs that will wear over time, on the lower RAM models due to swaps.

I do wonder, how many Surface laptops out there have failed due to worn-out SSDs?
Surface laptops are office productivity machines. It's going to be a very long time before MS Office will wear out an SSD.

              • @eug: I have this laptop - Surface Laptop 3 with 16GB i7 with a 512GB SSD.

You are exactly right. There is a nominal chance that the SSD will die. Mind you, if it does, at least you can replace it.

Microsoft said they made the SSD replaceable in the later models of Surface devices due to demand from their enterprise customers that wanted the ability to retrieve data off drives from broken computers. It is not because they wanted to be more sustainable here, I am afraid.

The most annoying thing, by a long shot, is that you can actually see the battery cover inside when you open up the laptop but you still can't replace it because it is literally glued down with a gel type substance. This should not be allowed. The number 1, 100% guaranteed item in any laptop to eventually die is always the battery. SSD's can last for a huge amount of time and will usually outlast a battery by 4-1. But as soon as the battery dies in MS Surface laptops, it's game over. The life span of the laptop is the life span of the battery - 4-5 years with normal usage, less if you're using it every day.

It's why I don't recommend Surface devices to friends/family. If they made the battery replaceable, I would, even though the soldered memory still shits me.

              • @eug: depends on users, you are assuming the typical office laptop isn't loaded with 20 system tray applications running in the background doing monitoring and stuff.

i use mine with VMware, so i went for the 16gb option.

                • @slowmo:

i use mine with VMware, so i went for the 16gb option.

I can assure you, you're in the minority. :)

            • +1

@slowmo: They started doing replaceable SSDs (beginning with the SP7+) because security conscious corporates and defence required it to consider them an option. If a device fails within warranty there’s no guarantee your storage is securely wiped with Microsoft’s servicing network.

              • @ctg: good point. thats good to know. :)

            • @slowmo: Reuse the original ssd by putting it in the entry model steam deck when it comes. Winning

          • @FireRunner:

$310 for a second hand 1TB SSD is pretty expensive in my books

            $326 brand new

            • @eug: Even so, that’s 2-3 times the price of a standard 2280 NVMe

              • @FireRunner:

Even so, that’s 2-3 times the price of a standard 2280 NVMe

You can't compare budget entry-level SSDs like the Kingston NV1 with midrange ones like the PM991.

In any case, my point was that the price isn't that restrictive. It's not like a 1TB drive is $500 which would be "way too much". Prices will only go down.

                • @eug: You can get a midrange Kingston A2000 about $130, the linked is 2.5x that price.

It’s still too much imo. I know the Steam deck SSD is the same 2230 form factor so maybe we’ll see more reasonable prices going forward

        • +3

Second hand SSDs are a fat no

  • +5

just to highlight, this laptop series is the last of the 'furry' keyboard surface. laptop 4 onwards feature the normal metal surface .

    • +1

What are you banging on about?

Aren't all of the surface laptop 3 aluminium?

Edit: just google imaged. Well I'll be a monkeys uncle.

    • I love the alcantara! Might hop on this deal to replace my Laptop 2.

edit: it seems only the 13.5" has alcantara

      • +1

Looking at the office laptops, alcantara looks and feels great when new.
        Once they're 3 years old…. yuck! :)

        • I've had mine for around 3 years and it still looks great, but only because I clean it at least weekly and don't rest my palms often (I don't use it for typing too often).

But my co-worker has the nastiest grey alcantara which is almost entirely brown now… gross.

          • +2

@peppet: i inherited a work laptop 1, when i first wiped the surface with a wet wipe, the wipe turned brown…. i got IT to replace it.

          • @peppet: If you don't use your laptop for typing then what do you use it for?

            • @dogsryummy: I use a wireless keyboard at home so I can sit on the couch and be lazy without balancing it on my lap (i have no desktop). But I type on it occasionally, and when I take it to work, and that soft alcantara is so nice

    • +1

if im not mistaken, the 15" are all metallic
the 13.5" come in both furry and metal

ive had both, and dont mind either,

but the furry ones if they fade are ugly

      • Ahhh. That makes sense. I have a 15" and didn't recall the Alcantara option when buying. This is a ripper deal for $900. You just can't get laptops with this screen ratio anymore.

        • +2

You just can't get laptops with this screen ratio anymore.

Well there is the Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pros, Surface Laptop Studio, and the Matebook X Pro. :)

          • +1

@eug: Fair call. You have limited choices for this screen ratio 🙂

            • +1

@MS Paint: Yeah, it's a real pity. I wish more laptops used it. When laptop shopping I automatically cross out any 16:9 laptops. 16:10 is acceptable but 3:2 is what I really want.

  • hardly a deal when there's this deal here and it is with Ryzen 4x series

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/700875

    • Too bad the screen sucks.

      • +1

why does it suck and how is this better?

        • +1

It's smaller, shittier res and probably a lot less nits. CBFR.

The screen on the SL3 is amazing.

        • +1

The HP has a 1920x1080 16:9 13.3" 165ppi screen. 16:9 is awful for productivity applications IMHO. The low PPI means text won't be as sharp.

This Surface is a 2496 x 1664 3:2 15" 201ppi touchscreen. The aspect ratio is more suited to productivity applications, the higher PPI gives you much sharper text, and the touchscreen makes navigation intuitive. Everyone I know who has gotten used to a touchscreen laptop can't go back.

        • why does it suck

          Color gamut 45% NTSC
          Brightness 250 nits

          and how is this better?

SL3 is something like 70% and 400 nits.

    Another option, CompNow eBay has the Surface Laptop 4 13.5" - AMD R5 4680U / 8GB RAM / 256GB for $999 with code: SNSMAY

    • +1

      ^ better deal.

    • So it should have a faster CPU but smaller screen size and $99 more expensive.
      It's hard to decide.

      • +1

Also pointing out that in the description, the Compnow one has a longer than standard MS retail 1-year warranty. You can decide what’s more important for you.

    • And here's the intel version: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255529436907?hash=item3b7ebdc6eb… for $100 more

  • It's a pity the only 15" one is R5 3000 series.

  • alas no 4 gee

  • AMD cpu ? I will wait for intel GEN 12 Laptop

  • I just ordered one.
    Is the screen good enough?

    • +1

I wish all laptops in this price range had screens that were as good!

    • +1

it is a pretty great screen

    • I ordered last Thur and I received the laptop.
      Fast delivery!

  • +1

I got myself an ipad pro and the misso a surface laptop 3 last year - the surface laptop 3 is pretty damn nice in the all metal body - and I low key regret the ipad pro for anything really heavily productivity related. Great media consumption device though.

$900 is a pretty tight price.

  • Any recommandation for 16gb ram version? I run cardano wallet on it.

    Thanks

    • Bought the 13 inch 1tb version. Thanks op

  • RT 3580U with Vega 9

A bit old but not too bad for the brand, good for eSports & 360 gen games. Here's a great 8 minute review.

That being said, when factoring light gaming there are better options from other brands. It is a cool build tho.

  • -6

Good luck who is getting this Super Stupid Slow Speed lappie.

  • Is it better than this? Acer Aspire 5 $998
11th Gen Intel Core i7 processor
    8GB DDR4 Memory
    512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
    15.6" Full HD display
    Windows 11 Home
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09DVQ1WSK

  • OOS already.

    • Showing one left for me.

      • Hmm yeah same. It was definitely OOS when I posted though. Maybe they added one extra.

        • And now it’s gone.
Awesome price but I can’t use Windows again after owning a Mac.

          • @1r4n14n: Sorry to hear that

          • @1r4n14n: doesnt make sense to switch ecosystem just because of 1 deal. rebuying all the products is a major PITA.
i have both and i know how expensive it gets.

  • +2

Looks like it is back in stock.

    • +1

Yep, they keep drip feeding more stock.

  • Available again

  • Do these come with an LTE option? I'm very confused lol

  • Got one, cheers OP.

  • OOS now.

  • This or macbook air M1 … my macbook pro mid-2012 can't multitasking fast anymore, that rainbow beach ball will popup

    • Depends on..

Do you like MacOS or Windows more?

    • do you have software that you bought on the old mbp that you can use on the m1?

      • No not really, whatsapp, chrome & teams are the most I use, but I suspect the slow down always while inside Chrome.

        • ah, oddly i don't use chrome on the macbook m1 so i can't tell if it's that bad, have always used firefox / safari.

It didn't affect me much as i have a o365 subscription , so it works on either osx or win so the baseline productivity stuff are already there.

you might miss the photo import/edit function if you have an iphone, because I remember I needed to pay for additional plugin for the HEIC files to work on windows.

if none of those concerns you, then hop on one of these surface laptop deals when they are sub 1k, its really good (imo). just that for my use case, I work better with 16gb ram instead of 8gb.

          • @slowmo: yeah thx, but the 16gb version will be that 13" one and it like $320 more ! Too bad so busy yesterday at work and no time to check ozbargain and missed this deal, hope something pops up again EOFY sale next month

            • @kaikor: yeah, not everyone needs the 16gb one tbh. I bought into entire surface eco-system because i got sick of having a different dock for different laptops of the same brand (lenovo), so i had to spec my surface devices to be a bit higher end side for "sanity".

don't worry about it, for windows based laptops, there's always a discount around the corner, the EOFY is coming up. so i wouldn't be surprised a new discount drops.

that's probably the key difference compared to macbooks i guess… i'd likely trade in my m1 for a new m-something instead.

(I know microsoft store is accepting trade in but it's just different kettle of fish)

            • +1

@kaikor: It's back in stock. MS has been consistently adding little stock at a time. Probably to create a sense of urgency.

              • +1

@Elation: haha. with microsoft, i always picture some poor sook updating inventory manually. its fun to think about.

              • +1

@Elation: No wonder this has been there so long and still got stock selling every now and then

              • +1

@Elation: They’re known to do this on eBay.
“Quick, get it before it’s gone!”
Meanwhile there’s pallets of surplus stock.

  • +1

    BACK IN STOCK!
    Why is this so popular?
The only thing I don't like is the touchscreen.

  • Going thru all the reviews online, seems AMD version has lot of issues … unless this guy just being so unlucky …
