Changing a payment method with Qantas flight

I have a return flight booked in direct with Qantas for next month. I had purchased travel insurance with Insureandgo for both my partner and I.

Now I have received my new Amex with travel insurance included that would cover us both.

Is there a way to request a refund on the original card and replace with Amex payment? I am going to call Qantas and ask in the morning but if I could save 1hr of my life if someone has the answer here that would be great.

No - You could possibly wrangle your way into a refund and repurchase the same tickets, but there will probably be a fare difference. Honestly, I doubt it'll work.

So you're going to waste another 1-2 hours of your life trying to get a refund on the travel insurance too?

Honestly, it's going to be a grand waste of time and I don't think you'll get the outcome you're seeking. Just move on and find some other way to save a few hundred dollars.

  • call Qantas and only take an hour. good luck more like 10 hours

    • I called last month at 11pm and had someone within a minute, it sounded like I was in a UK call centre

Very doubtful the CC insurance is as good as the standalone cover, and very, very doubtful you will be able to do what you want to do with the flight costs. Qantas call centres (the off-shore ones, which is what you will get unless you hold platinum FF status) can't even book/ticket flights properly, let alone muck around with something like that.

I would also not really want to be relying on CC travel insurance which you did a bit of a dodgy to engage to cover the trip.

Are they cash/revenue tickets? If original tickets are refundable, and seats are still available at the same or similar price, you could just purchase new seats with your Amex and then cancel the original tickets. But more likely you would be getting a flight credit at best.

    • It is not a bit of a dodgy if Qantas allows it. But as everyone else is saying, highly unlikely.

Have you used CC insurance before? the insurance that comes with premium credit cards is excellent, and some (my ANZ card for example) are offering covid cover too.

Don't bother. The only way to do what you want is to cancel your existing ticket and then buy a new one at today's prices. I am assuming your existing ticket is not a fully refundable ticket in which case at best you will only get a credit which may or may not have a cancellation fee.

  • Alright, I think I’ll save my time and not bother
