Newbie Homeowner Needs Security System Advice

Hey Team,

We've moved into a house, and given the area, we thought it best to get some kind of security system/camera setup in place.
With so much out there, I need some advice of what I should look for when purchasing one.

I'm thinking a budget 1000-1500.

Would you have any recommendations?

The EUFY systems are great, cheap and easy to self install.

Also one of the few that allow local storage so no subscription required.

I managed to pick up a 4 camera system for a good price on sale, well within your budget.

I don't consider them good value because they have non-replaceable batteries. Once the battery fails or dies completely and can't hold charge, then you have to get Eufy to replace them with a refurbished unit or you throw them into e-waste and buy another one.

I will suggest to install dhahua Cameras or any other wired camera systems . Wifi cameras are not reliable from my own experience.

Recommendations is that you research what you actually need and want and then post these details so people can help. How many camera's for example. WIFI or CAT 5 connectivity etc etc and the rest of the specs etc etc

Also search the forums. Same question had been asked here multiple times already.

Agree. Do you want monitoring or capacity for monitoring? Are you looking for external+internal monitoring (doors and windows vs rooms)?

Should you be looking at Paradox, Bosch, Sabre etc?

      • Thanks guys, I'll do a bit more planning on needs and then go from there

  • Reolink kits seem to be a popular option, and would likely be what I would buy if I was looking for one.

I have lived in some very dodgy places in my time.

I think I've had two instances where things were stolen from my property they were from the front lawn that some person just took advantage of, didn't even need to move a metre or two off the footpath. Completely my fault for not securing my valuables.

I am surprised at the money people put into home surveillance. some people do a few thousand. Others have paid for 10-20k systems. They all barely use it and after a few years, it barely functions because they don't do any upkeep. In the end it just becomes a very expensive baby monitor to watch the kids while they are up the other end of the house/backyard.

Do the basics first. Make sure your door and window locks work. Get a couple of sensor lights. Trim back plants that create hiding spots for crims to break in behind. That sort of thing.

Lots and lots of security cameras don’t do anything beyond capturing the postie falling off his bike and potentially compromise your network.

    For surveillance
go 4k if possible, go wired if possible, go POE if possible.

    Roughly

    Budget option
Wired- Reolink ($700 4x 4k cams with NVR)
Wireless- Eufy ($500-700 for a 3 pack of wireless cams)

    Mid range option
wired- Dahua 4k ($1000 for NVR and 4 cams)

    Premium option
Hikvision 4k ($2000 for NVR and 4 cams)

If installed by an electrician allow $100-$200 per camera for installation

    • Thanks for the info. Do you know if the Reolink NVRs work with Google Assistant, showing the live stream on a Google Nest Hub?

EDIT: I think I may have found the answer - https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/kur4d6/ip_camer…

      • I believe they do not.

        • Thanks. Ideally I'd like PoE cameras (to avoid charging batteries) and NVR (to avoid cloud storage subscriptions) but would like integration with Google Assistant. Budget was around $500-$700 so was initially looking at the Reolink. Would you have any other suggestions?

          • @ShortyX: The Dahua might be your best option, I'm unsure if google assistant is supported.
Or run the NVR from a program on your computer, blue iris is very popular. That may be supported.

Or maybe reolink cams work with a more premium NVR, not sure.

Why do you need them to work with google assistant? There is a reolink app.

            Good luck.
