Kia Sportage GT vs Used GLA250

Hi the wife and I are looking to get a new car and it's not an area than I'm that experienced in.

Any feedback beyond the two cards mentioned on this post is welcomed but please keep it respectful.

We like the idea of a medium SUV and like:

Used GLA250
New Kia Sportage GT 2022

Our budget is $60k, we aren't firm on getting an SUV. We just want something comfortable and reliable. For example we have considered the C Class.

Probably worth considering other factors in your decisions too.
Eg: How much money are you willing to spend on maintenance?

Because most euro cars are going to cost you a lot more to maintain. Especially a Merc.

Kias have a long manufacturer warranty, are decently comfortable, maintenance is a lot cheaper and they are fairly reliable.

But it all comes down to personal preference and budget (factoring in maintenance costs)

I believe maintenance of the Kia will be 10x less than the Euro.

(I am considering a Cerato GT myself hehe)

    • We have a Cerato GT. Great for city driving but a bit rough riding over longer trips. Really happy with it (barring on country trips)

Get which ever one your wife likes more….

I own the Sportage GT and love it.

The only major difference with the Merc is the badge and 10x the maintenance costs.

Do yourself a favour and get the Kia, nobody cares what you drive anyway :)

Who the hell cross shops used Euro shitboxes with new Korean cars?.

Is this the latest meme on OzBargain? Should I get this reliable, brand new, Korean/Japanese made vehicle with warranty, or this under powered, unreliable, expensive to service/repair used Euro with no warranty…

It's kinda hilarious at the moment, as there is an automotive arms race on at my local school on who can buy the biggest, most expensive child delivery car out of all the Karens. In the space of about 4 months, it has escalated to Range Rovers, Porsches, a brand new unicorn 300 Series Sarhara and from the Mom of all mums… an LDV Deliver 9 Bus for her 3 kids, all under 8 years old.

So, it seems don't get the sensible option, go for whatever will make all the other "stay at home moms" jealous at school pick up time.

    • More often than not, you'll notice the real rich ones driving regular cars.

      • Maybe maybe not. The smart ones will be leasing the cars for 3 years, writing it off as tax.

        • No they don't.

The general consensus will be that the used Merc (or equivalent like BMW, Audi, etc.) will cost you ~10x more in repairs and depreciation. AFAIK Kia has a 7-year warranty so you will have peace of mind for a while. If you care about the badge, you can't go wrong with a Lexus, although their infotainment system in older models will give you an aneurysm, however, I think most of the 2017+ models can be retrofitted with a new system that comes with Android Auto and Carplay for a nominal fee.

Hmm Drive car of the year or a used Merc. Tough one.

    • Car of the more advertising money? it is Cadogan's law!

  • GLA: Stuttgard engineer, build far away with cheap labour.
Sportage: Former Audi engineer build with cheap labour.
Bugger all difference, the label is fading every day.
Give it a few years it will be like a Telefunken TV replaced with a Hisense. (or in this case an LG or whatever song)

  • Chuck a little more into the budget and get an ioniq5 or EV6.

    • Munro shows you the underneath! Would not take it off the bitumen!
Fot that get your 40 odd k ev from Mycar!

Don't buy based on your emotions.
I did, grabbed an Audi Q7 secondhand and ignored the warnings from my friends who'd been burnt by euro cars before.
In short, don't do it. Yes you may be financially sound but the stress of having a car sit on your driveway for months and bleed your wallet dry is not worth it.

I went from a Kia sportage - 2007, zero problems, $300 services for 7 years.
to a 2008 Q7, multiple problems, $800 services plus $8,000 just to repair things that were falling apart, injectors, dpf filters, cv joints. Endless number of error codes.
then back to a sportage - 2010, zero problems, $300 services.

Apart from the obvious points that the Merc is going to be likely lesser equipped, less reliable and used for the same price…. I've ridden in both of these cars and the Sportage simply wipes the floor with the GLA. The GLA I found to be essentially a hatchback on stilts, cramped, unremarkable interior and a really uncomfortable ride. Buy the Kia, stop caring about the badge.

    • unremarkable interior and a really uncomfortable ride

what kind of GLA have you driven? 2014 ?

      • GLA250, 16/17 I’m pretty sure.

    • MB is a toxic brand!Over rated & way over priced.

    Kia.

    / thread.

    Please no more of these!!

what's with people comparing used euro car vs new japanease or korean car?
Should I have a new apple or half eaten mango ? lol

  • For that money, why not look at the other options too like the CX5, wait time is about 3 months I heard

  • Isn't the GLC more comparable in size to the Sportage?

Maybe you should look at the Kia Stonic, or MB GLC (depending which size car you're ACTUALLY looking for. Unless you're shopping based on price only - in which case, get a nicely equipped Audi A3 or something)

  • Just buy a beat up Camry, you will never look back.!

  • We were looking for a mid sized SUV for around 50k. Sportage was our top choice (given that had the most recent model update) but the current delivery date is around 9-12months. We ended getting the Tucson (same car different look as the Sportage) with a delivery date that was around 6months. The RRP for top of the range Tucson was close to 60k but with a car broker, we were able to get one close to our 50k budget.
I think you'd be very disappointed with the tech, space, service cost, wear and tear, and reliability for the GLA compared to the Sportage and not to mention the resale in a few years time.
