Lenovo Wi-Fi Issues? Zoom Freezing. Wi-Fi Card Replacement a Solution?

Hi I have a Lenovo E15 Gen 2 bought about 18 months ago with AMD Ryzen 7 4700U and Realtek RTL8822CE, 802.11ac Dual Band 2x2 Wi-Fi.

When I bought this I was apprehensive because I had read about the poor wifi card.

However, I didn't think I had issue.

However now I'm wondering whether I do. Zoom has always been beset by problems whereby on my Netgear Orbi Mesh setup at home, it continually says poor network during zoom meetings and starts to have the video freeze for 1-2 seconds then restart then freeze again with the same thing 2 minutes later.

I'm not sure if poor wifi is causing this.

Other Lenovo owners have commented with their gaming laptops with the same wifi card that games become unplayable because the ping suddenly jumps up to 1000ms. I wonder if something like this is interrupting my zoom calls but that this is not noticeable during daily use of the laptop.

Has anyone ever replaced the Wifi Card in this laptop. Does the Wifi card whitelist still exist for Lenovo. Would an Intel AX200 NGW card work or maybe a newer AX210 NGW.

Any guidance appreciated.

BTW the webcam on my E15 is awful. Blurry and fuzzy and worse than an E460 from 4 years ago.

I'm not sure if poor wifi is causing this.

Connect your laptop directly to internet router with an ethernet cable and use zoom for an hour. See if it is still freezing.

I don't have that particular laptop model to assure you replacement wifi card will work. Beware of CNVi card - don't get one if your laptop doesn't support it.

Getting an wifi 6 card won't give you extra performance (and overcome issue) if your mesh system is still wifi 5 only.

    • Thanks, next time I notice it I'll give it a try via ethernet. It's not that I'm aiming for extra performance, it's just I'm wondering if this Realtek card is prone to signal dropouts which are affecting zoom.

Using the same Orbi, I am no issues with my ipad, and 2 other older laptops with zoom.

  • google wifi put in this “video conferencing” setting, which caused a lot of peoples zoom calls to mess up, maybe there’s something similar on your router?

  • I had issues with Zoom freezing and dropping video packets and it looked like it was an issue with Orbi. I ended up connecting the original Telstra router to the NBN box letting it handle the internet connection and DHCP stuff and just use the orbi as the wifi access points. Never found root cause of the issue with the Orbi but have not had an issue since swapping back to the original router.

    • I have the Orbi as a wireless access point to another modem router. I don't have the zoom issue with my iPad and other laptops using the same wireless network.

      • That is the setup I now run and no longer have the problem. I only have the issue when the orbi is used as the modem/router.

  • Lenovo has wifi issues, upgrade their driver.

Reset the settings again and it will work, Also Lenovo has the worst customer service and backup support, they have a great sales team who will chase you till you buy from them and no one will return your call or emails if you have raised question on issues.

    Never Lenovo again.
