Free over-65 Flu Shot in Perth

I am over 65 so I qualify for a free flu shot. However, when I contacted my bulk billing doctor who has done all of my previous flu shots he advised that he is no longer doing any vaccinations.

When my partner made her booking with her doctor she asked if I could attend too. They advised that I would have to join the practice and that there was a $125 joining / initial consultation fee (partially claimable from Medicare.)

I know I could get it done at a pharmacy but that would cost (I haven't checked whether this applies to over-65s but I assume it does) and as a true blue OzBargainer I don't want to do that.

Can anyone please advise where I can get a free over-65 flu shot in Perth (preferably near Karrinyup)?

  • TerryWhite Chemmart Karrinyup is a private billing practice. Payment is required at the time of the consultation. Please note all Covid vaccination appointments are free of charge.

    • Other Terry White locations participate in the:
      - National Immunisation Program (which I think is free for >65y.o.), and
      - High Dose Quad Flu Vaccinations - over 60 years.

I don't know WA, so don't know which is closest for you, but the online booking tool would help you decide.

  • What if I am over 65+?
People aged 65 years and older can receive a newly registered adjuvanted flu vaccine, Fluad Quad, specifically designed to provide increased protection by creating a greater immune response. Please contact your Priceline Pharmacy GP for details and eligibility.

I phoned Terry White Doubleview who are part of National Immunisation Program.

Flu shot is free but they charge $15 admin fee.

Can you list where you have tried, so that we don't waste our time in our search to help you?

      • +1

I have just called Priceline Karrinyup. They have $15 service fee as well.

That is all I have tried.

        • Fair enough, and I hope you find somewhere, but "…as a true blue OzBargainer…" I would have expected you to have searched a bit more before posting here.

          • @GG57: I have done quite extensive research. It indicated that pharmacies are not free, as shown by results of phone calls, which is why I was asking about alternatives.

I have followed the links on webpage below.

            https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/F_I/Flu-vaccine-for…

You can get immunisations from your:

            doctor
            local immunisation clinic
local government (not all offer this service)
Aboriginal community health services (external site)
            Central Immunisation Clinic
            travel immunisation clinic
            pharmacies.

Some doctors may charge a consultation fee.

            Central Immunisation Clinic
            The Central Immunisation Clinic (CIC):

            > is a free immunisation service for children

            Immunisation clinics (community health centres)

Some say for children and adolescents only. I didn't want to have to call the ones that don't say that to find out if they accept adults.

      • Chemist Warehouse have no administration fee for 65+ NIP funded vaccines. Priceline has $9.95 administration fee.

Wut? You have to pay a $125 membership fee to see a doctor now?

    • Not naming names but they are in Oxford St, Leederville

    • I don't know if membership fees are common, but I'm seeing daily reports of patients being 'surprised' with the costs for service items that were previously covered by Medicare (which were recently removed by the current LNP government).

Because everyone hates the stupid prick who comes in sick and spreads it to everyone in the office. There's a reason codral have dropped the "soldier on" advertisements.

Plenty of people think they get the flu too and they didn't, they got a cold. A bad flu is pretty shitty to deal with, I'd rather spend 5 minutes to get a shot than a week off work.

        Thanks for your reply.

It doesn't explain why flu shots are so popular in Australia. Does the warm climate in Australia make people more sensitive to the flu?

        • +1

Sure, I explained it, the flu sucks and spending 5 minutes to get vaccinated saves lives and reduces the risk of getting sick.

Millions of hours of lost work, hundreds of deaths, this could be prevented if people sucked it up and spent a few minutes getting a shot. My workplace gave it to me for free, they even paid my salary while I wandered up there and got it. It's cheaper than paying sick leave and I lessen the risk of getting sick.

What more do you want? A blockchain for flu shots?

          • -2

@freefall101: Well, I guess the warm weather does make people more sensitive.

            • @rektrading: Are you ok, my dude? Is the UST meltdown causing this weird weather fascination?

              • @freefall101: I'm 👍.

                🙇 for asking.

Waiting for the plebs to sell and an update from the LFG before making a decision to DCA or wait a bit longer.

        • Maybe it makes them more intelligent and understand the science behind flu shots.

Does "suck it up" mean suck on oxygen while in the ICU when you get a bad dose of the flu?

    • Over 50,000 people a year die of flu in the USA, making it a leading cause of death, you're more likely to die from flu than from nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis combined https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm

      • -1

        50,000 deaths are pretty low.

        • +1

Maybe you should send a strongly worded email to the CDC demanding they remove the flu from their "leading causes of death" web page.
