Chipset lottery with these low cost USB 3 SATA enclosure…

    • -1

      Take one for the team.

    • May I ask what do you mean by chipset lottery? are certain chipsets limited some how?

      • +2

There are actually many different USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 gen 1 chipsets. If you are simply going to use the enclosure for a HDD, then you probably don't really care.

If you intend to use it with a SATA SSD, then it can be more tricky. Some won't support UASP, some don't support TRIM over USB. Speed/performance differences. If you want to use it with a Raspberry Pi 4, then I've heard there are some chipsets which just don't work well with Pi 4.

I find the el cheapo ones tend to come with inferior chipsets. I recently bought a dirt cheap USB to SATA3 cable from feeBay, it has an uncommon USB chipset and it does not support UASP (no point testing TRIM over USB as it wouldn't support it).

  • Succmass? No you succmass.

  • Amazon is full of good enclosures. I picked up 2 tool-less ones a month ago for $15 each. next day delivery. unhappy? free returns

why bother with AliExpress for a few $ less

    • +7

Because cheap. It's about providing cheaper alternatives. People can choose to go to Amazon for the reasons you've said and pay more or buy overseas cheaper.

    • +4

Often people don’t need an enclosure in a hurry. I.e. a dead or old laptop they eventually want to salvage. I’d prefer to pay 60% less and wait a few weeks personally.

      • we're talking like $10 here.

but fine, suit yourself. I'd rather buy a product from a store that I can trust, and easily return for extra $10. peace of mind can't be bought

        • +5

AliExpress has free returns as well, or if it’s faulty I just click the button for a refund and it comes through no problem - it’s been just as easy as Amazon on my last few goes.
This is oz”bargain”, not spend tripple the price for often the exact same item for a perceived peace of mind.

          • @Lukas: I don't know about exactly same item, I had a couple enclosures from Ali a couple years back, they were shite. m.2 one cracked soon, and sata one was dodgy as

copying a lot of files in one go, or sometimes one large file would cause it to malfunction and disappear from disk management, until physically reconnected

maybe they (Ali) improved refunds process since? I remember having a loooot of trouble getting my few bucks back.

I'd rather spend $10 more to have it tomorrow, and be sure it actually works as intended, as opposed to wasting hours figuring out what's wrong and getting my money back

it's all about how you value your time. where was that.. if it takes you an hour to save $10 you're working for less than minimum wage

but once again, these are just my thoughts. I don't buy things from Ali anymore. the stingy one pays twice, they say in our country

        • +3

To each his own. Some may be living on tight budget.

I have an "unbranded" version (also from AliExpress) that looks identical to this aside from the screen printed logo on the case of this one.

      It's janky.
It does work, but the cable has to be positioned just right and don't you dare try to move anything while it's operational cause it will disconnect.

If you're happy with these compromises, then yeah, it's cheap and does the job. But if you need something remotely reliable, then yeah, I'd be spending the extra dollars.

I'm negging to highlight this comment more than anything.

    • Care to provide link from amazon?

    • if you take into account the cost of prime, it's more than "a few $ less"

      • if you take into account all the benefits of prime, free movies and tv series, music, games.. I think it's more expensive not to get prime at this point

        • i hardly watch tv/movies these days, got all my music stored locally, don't play games; the few movies i wanted to watch when i had a prime trial came with an extra charge(??). it's only really worth it for free shipping, and i made just a couple of orders during my trial

          • @tdw: each to their own, I guess. I also have all my music downloaded, but it's too convenient to listen from any device at any time

and free next day (sometimes same day) delivery made a huge difference during lockdowns, we often get a lot of pantry items (or PC components. or Lego toys. or shower gel. or toilet paper) without wasting time on going to the local supermarket. I'd rather spend this time on taking my family to a park or cafe. saves shite loads of time and often money

but that's how if fits in our lifestyle, for different people it's gonna be different, no doubt.

Before you buy, I suggest you read some of the negative (1, 2 stars) comments. It does feel that you get what you paid for.

    • Per the negative votes on my comment above, people apparently don't like to read realistic reviews.

  • Just picked one up for 0.1c with free shipping as a new user signup - thanks OP
