Are Mobile Devices Sim Locked in Telstra Plus Rewards Store

Hi eveyone,
I wanted to check if anyone knows that whether the iPhones or iPads (cellular ones) are operator locked when we buy from Telstra Plus Rewards store.
I have enough points to redeem one. So it won’t be purchased as a contract kind of setting.

I tried to contact customer service. But after waiting 2 hours on the online chat and 2 hours on the customer support call I could not get anyone from Telstra.

Next month I’m travelling overseas and wanted to bring a new iPhone as a gift for mum. But if the device is locked, then it will be a big headache.

Thanks

  • I got a 12 pro from the Telstra Plus store and it’s not sim locked.

    • Telstra called me back this morning and told me the opposite. So you tested the device with another operator's sim?
      I'm really confused :)

      • Yes, I have used a Kogan sim in the phone previously and in the settings under Service Provider Lock it says No SIM restrictions which means it is definitely not operator locked.

  • I dont think any operator sim locks devices to a network anymore…

    • Ummm … aren't the ones from colesworth still locked for 12mths or so ?

      • Not sure about Coles.
But pretty sure Telstra, Optus & Vodaphone don't network lock their phones anymore. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong

    • Mobiles categorised as prepaid and bundled with a prepaid SIM are still locked. These would mostly be cheapies from the likes of ZTE or their carrier branded counterparts. If the original phone box was packaged inside a carrier branded outer box or a sleeve and you found a SIM card and activation instructions inside then there is a very high likelihood of the phone being network locked.

So called flagship models and mid-tier phones such as Samsung S series, iPhones iPads and pixels aren't network locked.

  • Thanks for all answers. I got bit confused actually. Telstra gave a callback this morning regarding my question. And they told me all the mobile devices in the Plus Rewards store are sim locked. And there is a fee of $80 for the unlock operation.

  • Only certain prepaid phones are network locked. The iPhone 12 Pro is not network locked
