People profiteering on OzB classifieds - Fair / Ethical?

Last Saturday night Ozbargain was going haywire due to a leaked code that allowed members to receive Free 12 Month Kayo / Binge subscription.

90% of people that signed up later got rejected saying "the code you used was an error, blah blah" but a lucky few managed to evade Murdoch's henchmen.

I've noticed in Classifieds that some people, that is recipients of the free 12 month subscriptions, are now selling them for as much as $125 a pop (effectively raking in close to $500). You can see in their comment history talking about how they can still log in, etc.

Where do you stand on this? Should they be helping out fellow OzBargainers who didn't get as lucky with a free subscription? Or are they fully entitled to reap the rewards of their entrepreneurial cunning?

Note: For the record, no - I am not salty. I've happily had Kayo / Binge (paying) for close to a year now.

unlike physical products, they didn't stop other people from obtaining the deal so i guess it's fine

    Fixed it, haha.

But seriously, who really cares. Power to them if they can make a few bucks off it and provide a discount to others.
How would you choose which stranger on the Internet to give it to for free anyway?

    • We all have different ethics and things we value (not saying you don't btw). If you value fairness and integrity (in the way they see it) then it would matter because it goes against these ideals. Just pondering.

I missed that deal, so sad. Not paying another OZb member for it though. What's stopping them from taking your money then changing the password or whatever?

Good luck to them for trying.

I give an exception this time because it is screwing over Murdoch with a double whammy

If they are providing access to these services for less than the retail price, if they are offering a good deal, then what's the problem? What difference should it make where they got the codes.

I'm only voting to keep the poll results EQUAL

    Supply and demand.

As long as the price you are paying is less than retail, why not?

I have a YouTube Premium family and we all share for cost price. I could easily charge $20 a year instead of $10 because it's still cheaper than YTP buy yourself.

  • If you are not salty, it won’t matter what others think.

I would be wary paying money for Kayo or Binge here now as there still must be a chance they can cancel these free accounts.

By the way, did anyone who was on the Telstra plan get put back on the same plan after the free one got cancelled?

  • OP out of interest, how do you feel about people who pick stuff up from gumtree/council pickup/whatever for free, then sell online?

  • 3rd option. Buyer's fault.

  • That's the same for someone who bought a house for 300k and is now selling for 2M, isn't?

    Scum? Smart?

I think that's just how life works… If you receive a gift, you can sell it… you do whatever you want…
If people have a subscription, it doesn't matter how they got it (*unless criminal/fraudulent)… they can do whatever they want if someone is willing to pay for that.

  • Also, profiteering is probably not the right word.

    profiteering
    /prɒfɪˈtɪərɪŋ/
    Learn to pronounce
    noun
the practice of making or seeking to make an excessive or unfair profit, especially illegally or in a black market.
"seven food merchants were charged for profiteering"

  • Why is profit considered such a dirty word? Thats the world we live in.
