  • extra $5 if you join ebay plus..

  • just how many of us are getting routinely bogged?

    • The ground has been pretty soft in my part of Sydney for a couple of months now.
Rain, rain, rain and water table just below the surface.

    • Sounds like someone only been driving around shopping malls…

  • Utterly useless in soft sand (like Stockton Beach) but very handy for muddy terrain and compacted but mushy snow. Really good price, no reason to pay 3x for the original Maxtrax.

    • +1

I have owned both Maxtrax and this 1st gen X-Bull tracks. You do get what you pay for. Maxtrax's plastic is higher quality, my X-Bull became hardened and brittle after a couple of years out on a dozen trips, and they cracked one day during a recovery. Having said that, my X-Bull is less than half the price of my Maxtrax, so I can't really complain too much.

    • Is it true on stockon beach it would be useless? I primarily bring these for recovery purposes on stockon beach. So far never had to use them but now a little worried if i do need to use it.

      • +2

Very much so. There's very little friction with the soft sand so soon as the wheels spin, they just go flying out the back. Might be ok nearer the beach with more compacted and dense wet sand but won't get you out of the soft stuff near the dunes.

By contrast, they work very very well in muddy terrain providing a solid platform for wheels to grip onto and move you out of bogged condition.

For Stockton, nothing is more valuable than making sure tyre pressures are lowest you can do, some people even run even lower than 10 PSI but 15 is my personal sweet spot. After that, make sure you have rated recovery points installed and some decent recovery gear like snatch straps.

This kit would be a good start: https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/products/recovery-gear/comp…

There's always people that are happy to give you a pull out and I've helped tons of people myself, mostly AWD SUVs that think they can make it. These boards are a last resort.

Obligatory note: In case you don't know already, always leave from Anna Bay exit and go straight to the car wash nearby which has an undercarriage spray to get rid of salty sand that can accelerate rust. After that, pop into Valhalla Restaurant for really good pizza!

        • I agree tire pressure is one of the biggest factor. I run at 18 when hot. I have snatch straps but not a proper rated recovery points. Need to get that sorted asap. Thanks for the tips and reply.
