Buy Gift Card Using Coles Gift Card

Can I buy a giftcard (for example JB Hifi gift card) in Coles store and pay it with a Coles giftcard?

I will get more money out of my credit card award points by buying Coles digital gift card, but worry that this trick wont work anymore.
I used to be able to do it, but it was years back

    Where and what for can Gift Cards be used
    Please note: From 1st July 2019 Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards can no longer be redeemed at Kmart Tyre & Auto Service.

    The Website sets out the up to date information for each Participating Retailer as to where each Gift Card can be used.

    No Gift Card can be used for:

    purchases initiated by phone, email, post or fax;
    Service ATMs;
    bill payments, including credit card accounts and store accounts;
    purchases at hotels owned by Coles Group companies; and
    purchases of gift cards.

      They have also plugged the hole now.

      It used to be possible without the cashiers looking, now it is automatically declined if you scan a gift card to pay for a gift card.

      Similar to woolies now.

        What if you buy $50 of potatoes on a gift card, and return them at the service desk 10 mins later?

        • They issue another gift card for the refund value

          • @foxmulder: But how would they know you paid with gift card?

            Woolies and Coles don't ask for proof of purchase for fresh produce returns.

            edit: no need to neg whoever is doing that, it's a genuine question.

              @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: For every return transaction I have done at Coles and Woolworths in the last two years or so, I have always been asked whether I have the original purchase receipt.

              • There was one occasion at Coles where the checkout printed a receipt so faded that it was impossible to scan the barcode and it was hard to decipher the receipt information at the top of the receipt. The service desk person eventually found the receipt by searching the system and guessing some of the receipt information at the top of the receipt.

              • There was another situation at Woolworths where the e-receipt was not available, even though I could see the transaction on my Everyday Rewards account. The service desk person asked for either my Everyday Rewards card or to point out which checkout I went to in order to find the transaction receipt on their system.

              I acknowledge you can do a return at Coles or Woolworths without the original receipt, but I try to avoid that situation, because not having the original receipt tends to complicate the situation… The last thing I want is an accusation that I’m trying to commit fraud or something like that (and I say that, because one service desk person accused someone else of doing that one time whilst I was waiting at the service desk).

              Anyway, if your original transaction at Coles or Woolworths involved the redemption of a gift card and the service desk person scans the receipt barcode (or finds the original transaction receipt) to initiate a receipt-based return, as soon as they go to the payment method to return the money to you, the system will flag to them that a gift card was used as a payment method. Both Coles and Woolworths have default options for returning funds for an item paid for in part or in full using a gift card, but service desk staff have the option to override the default options if they see fit.

          even if it did work, seems like a lot of work to save max 2%?

    One week ago I purchased a Coles Mastercard using a Coles GC at a self check out. Need to make sure that the GC covers the total purchase value. Best not to let the attendant not see that you are using a GC although in some stores they do not care and in others will try to stop you.

  • I think Visa/Mastercard cards are allowed as they are not considered gift cards - they already have a premium value ($100 card for $105.95 for example). Gift cards, on the other hand, are $100 value for $100.

    • Buy variable ones @ Woolies, load up to $500.

  • Yes but no split payments. Your Coles gift card must cover your purchase in full in one transaction.

    The answer you’re looking for is here, and it is a little more nuanced than what has been discussed here.

    I will add the caveat that most staff at serviced checkouts at my local stores have been properly trained to not accept any requests from customers to use a gift card to pay for any third-party gift cards at Coles (including JB Hi-Fi gift cards), so don’t expect that method to always work.
