Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 Portable Hard Drive 500GB - $79, 1TB - $119 @ Officeworks

200

Saw these two babies in today's paper (daily telegraph Sydney)

both feature USB 3.0 and are completely portable (no power adaptor), they feature shock sensing technology and comes with 3 year warranty for peace of mind.
for retail the price is pretty good. although you might be able to find cheaper online.

i sometimes find it easier walking into my local officeworks to buy stuff. 1, i get it straight away 2, if i have a problem just return to the store, complain and have it sorted same day.

i bought one previously when retravision had it for $99 and had it price beat at OW. it works as expected and has minimal bloatcrap. not that you can't format/delete anyway.

here are the direct links

1TB - http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

i luv a good bargain!

Pretty good deal for current prices, although I got that exact 1TB HDD price matched at OW a few weeks back for $95. But that deal has expired.

  • Almost back to pre-flood prices.

probably with the unfamous brands, such as Toshiba/Buffalo HDD, not tier 1 WD/Seagate tho

Lots of bad reviews related to the cable connection

would you like to link us?

I have one and I have no problem with the cables and this is after 6-8+ months of usage and this is with me taking it travelling with me overseas.

I read into these problems and personally I like the cable, could be a little longer though. Doesn't feel piss weak at all or loose.

Sorry, I just realised this is the basics version and I have the canvio plus. the only noticeable difference I can see is that the one I have has pre-loaded backup software (and I don't even use it).

  • Why is it that internal HDDs are now almost more expensive than external ones? Bloody ridiculous!

    • +1

the internal drives are based on day to day prices; the external drives are based on older prices and stock levels of each individual supplier.

I think also it was said that drives will never return to their pre flood prices, at least until 4-5tb drives are out. eg $69 for desktop 2tb.

    • +1

internal hard drives have more rigorous quality checks to survive 24/7 operation during the warranty period

external hard drives switch themselves off (from their firmware) so they dont fail (and arent 24/7 rated) during the warranty period

      • So I'd say internal and external hard drives have different model numbers? I have used an internal Hitachi drive in an third-party enclosure, but it dies in 3 years anyway.

      • That's not necessarily true.
It's actually the spin-up and spin-down cycles, when the drive is powering on or off, that do the most wear on the platter as the heads come to rest down on the platter as it stops moving.

The best practice to ensure HDD longevity is to not let it spin down for as long as possible (ideally never) in a vibration-less environment where it is running with a constant temperature on all sides of the HDD.

  • Toshiba HDDs inside ?

So has anyone used one of these and is it as good as the other Seagates, WD etc. ?

    • Been using one of the 1tb. Purchased this from the 1tb deal a few weeks back. Can only compare to a usb2 WD Elements WD elements 500gb portable hard drive I purchased about over 1 year a ago. Both have been excellent and usb3 is well worth the upgrade on the Toshiba. Considering usb3 should now be the standard and is backwards compatible. I see no reason not to purchase usb3 drives these days.

    • Toshiba is a Japanese company. The Japs always make better electronic products than American companies. These Toshiba drives are more compact than the Seastes and WD's and have a much lower rate of failure (including warranty returns). The only true competitor to these toshiba drive are the Hitachi Houro drives. .

That may be true, but I'd still rather buy a Samsung TV than a Toshiba one.

Although having said that, I still prefer Toshiba laptops over a Samsung.

Point being - Japanese tech isn't always the killshot it used to be…

Still a good deal and I would give them a go, even though I have never purchased a Toshiba portable HDD before :-)

  • Officeworks have been offering better prices than others lately so a positive vote from me for this good deal and with so much talk about flooding I really think now manufacturers are taking this unfortunate event to their advantage and making a good profit out of it (along with retailers).

  • Got two of these drives when it was on special for $99 two weeks ago. They do have compatibility issue with some systems. For me it will not work while my USB WiFi adapter is plugged in. Strangely enough, no matter it is plugged in USB 2.0 or 3.0 hub, not working at all both under Windows and Ubuntu. All other external hard drives and flash memory sticks I use do not have any issue. Finally I decided to retire my USB WiFi adapter as these drives are much more expensive.

    • The 2 I purchased @ $94 from previous deal have no compatibility issues with all the computers and laptops I have in my house using usb2 and 3 ports. Yet a Kingston datatraveller 8gb usb stick works fine on all computers except for the one using a Fractal Design Define R3 Computer Cases and gigabyte series 6 mATX motherboard.

  • Great deal, bought this eBay for $86 and still hasn't arrived since last week. This is a great deal. + from me.
