I am travelling overseas and my operator is Belong that doesn't send SMS overseas for stuff like bank OTPs etc. Just wondering if there's a way that I could overcome this hurdle in case I need to use these services.
Unfortunately changing mobile provider is not an option in this case. :(
Receiving SMS with MVNO
Comments
Apparently not if you are with a MVNO like belong. Tried this last time I was overseas, didn't work.
Currently in the Netherlands. I have a got a Boost sim. From the Boost page:
How do I use my phone overseas? Can I use International Roaming?
International roaming is not available on your Boost Mobile service. However, I am able to receive bank verification sms on my S20FE. Now here is the caveat. I bought a local Vodafone NL sim for data and put it in the S20FE. I also took my old S7 with me, thinking that I could put the Boost sim in that in case I need sms verification. I have not been able to receive sms on the S7 at all. If I had known this I would have just got an EU esim.
So I believe that bobbieb is correct and it may just be a network issue with your phone as to why you were unable to receive the sms.
I know you said changing is not an option, but want to point out it's not about MVNO per se, it's the policy of the belong I guess. Getting SMS from amaysim directly to mobile in Europe and forwarding incoming calls to VoIP to avoid paying $1/m incoming fees, works just fine.

Can I use my service overseas?
No, your service is for use in Australia only. You won’t be able to
use it to make or receive calls or to send messages while you’re
overseas, or to access mobile data while overseas. We don’t
currently offer any international roaming options.TL;DR - you can't use belong SIM overseas.
That suggests you can still receive messages.
The phrase "We don’t currently offer any international roaming options." means you won't be able register at the network overseas and therefore won't be able receive SMS which is confirmed by OP.
Nah. I am with Boost. Boost says the same thing, but i have been able to receive sms (depending on the phone). See my post above.
@gomertose: Try turn off wifi calling and see if it still works. By the way, my Belong SIM I have with me in the same Netherlands does not register to any network.
Buy a Voda sim, activate a new number and change your 2FA to the new number for the period of your holiday.
You can put the sim card in your phone if you ever need it, and Voda is pretty bullet proof for roaming. If you need it, you will be very happy you spent the 15mins and $10 to set it up!
Are you sure about not receiving SMS while abroad?
I was always of the impression that SMS will be delivered where ever you are, regardless of whether you have roaming.
