Sleep on Air-Mattress or Buy a New Mattress Now?

Hi OzBargain,

I've just moved into a new place and trying to score some deals and gradually furnish the apartment.

I obviously need a new bed, but the Ozbargain in me says to wait for the end of year financial sales to get a good deal, especially since I'm leaning towards getting a box mattress (Koala/sleeping duck/emma etc). If I were to do that, I would either have to use an air mattress for about a month or so, or I can borrow a friends mattress but would be responsible for paying for pick up and drop off ($150+)

Thoughts on whether I should pull the trigger or hold off a bit?

EDIT: another option to include use of box mattress with intention of returning as part of their 100 day free night trials?

Thanks

    3. Use an air mattress until a deal comes round

The OzB in you should say, sleep on floor until you find a deal.

Otherwise air mattress, then use as spare for guests.

Email and call up kolah mattress and explain yourself. Might get a discount voucher.

  • How much do you love your back?

    • This.

I wouldn't mess around with something as important as the mattress you sleep on every night.

      Get a decent pillow too.

Are you sure the box mattress EOFY sales are any better than their sales at any other time?

A number of them have Mother's Day specials on now, including 50-55% off Emma mattresses and bed base.

If you know anyone who has bought a Koala matress ask them for a referral to get $200 off, the code only works when there isnt a sale happening & the sales always end up being a similar discounted price anyways

  • ZZZ atelier. OzB favourite. Got ours 2 yrs ago, Queen mattress cost me $200-300.

Arrives rolled up in a box. These box jobs have softer edges but rest of it is firm and comfy

    • YMMV but ours sagged badly at the 3 year mark.

  • EMMA has 50% off now, why not use that?

  • If you go the air mattress route, get a decent topper for it. It's relatively comfortable enough until you're ready to buy a decent mattress. Then you can use the mattress topper on the new mattress if you need it.
Sleeping on an air matress without a topper in winter is going to be cold and keep you awake. My ex slept on one for years. I slept on it once and the next day bought a topper for it. It made it tolerable.

  • Air mattresses blow. Don’t.

Put the money you’d spend on the air mattress to buyin a real mattress now.
