No Free Postage for Me from Centre Com

https://www.centrecom.com.au/ claim free postage, but not for me based on my post code, according to Aus Post's calculator it's the same cost as sending from Centrecom's suburb (VIC, 3020) to same suburb in (Victoria VIC, 3020) as it is to send from (VIC, 3020) to my Suburb (4872) in Qld.

  • Found this in the T's & C's

"…excludes areas whereby the cost becomes high due to the delivery location’s remoteness, e.g. Kangaroo Island and other extreme remote locations. If unsure please check with us first."

    • But that's so weird that the cost is the same but centrecom charges you. I feel like they might use the T's & C's as an out

  • Why not contact them and ask?

I assume the rates you see on the auspost website aren't what they pay, since they ship a lot of stuff and have a corporate account. Or they use startrack instead, which might cost more.

But really they've just configured their site as a catch all, if it doesn't cost them more I'm sure they'd happily give you free shipping.

    • I did! the reply was " We'd love to be able to offer FREE Shipping for the entirety of Australia - and understand the disappointment when your locality means this offer is not available to you.

Unfortunately 4872 is not included in the free postage network outlined by Australia Post"

to which I replied with the fact that according to Aus post it does not.

      • they may not be using Auspost?

        • Yet they state they are

          • @Series4Episode10: Sometimes, they may use the odd courier as they charge cheaper and Auspost may not deliver to some area(only once a month)

see what they say when you said the cost are the same.

            • @SnoozeAndLose: As I said … I did make the point to them … we get daily postal deliveries and the post office is also open Saturday morning, I am not remote.

        • WTF is the "free postage network outlined by Australia Post"

      • +3

Except, as I said, they use a business account.

https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/docume… - that is the business rate guide. You fall in Zone 3, so you're definitely more expensive than Zone 1, thus why they charge you postage. Notice that over 5kg there is also a "distance charge", of which you'd definitely be at the top end of the scale for them.

        • So businesses are ripped off by having a business account … which rips consumers off and disadvantages people in not so remote areas?!?!

          • +1

@Series4Episode10: It's not ripping off consumers, it's charging a realistic price. The further something goes, the more it costs and you live 2,500km from Centrecom and in a regional area.

You're not getting ripped off by not getting free shipping from Centrecom, you're getting heavily subsidised mail the rest of the time.

And yes, you are at a disadvantage. That's what comes with living in a remote area, everything is heavily subsidised so you can have mail, healthcare, roads and you get given the zone tax offset but occasionally you'll have to pay extra for stuff. That is life in a capitalist society, I recommend voting for a socialist party at the upcoming election.

  • If they are legit using aus post I don’t see the issue. I’ve never experienced any excess remote location charges.

Centrecom's response is not exactly correct. Seems the rep don't have a clue and they're just making stuff up at this point. There is no 'free postage network outlined by Australia Post'. Their online warehouse is operated from Sunshine or Maribyrnong (either one, I'm not too sure). With the corporate AusPost account that I have, sending to 4872, QLD is double what it would cost to send within Metro VIC. So yes, it is likely the above reason that they don't offer free shipping to your locality.

    They can also use Xpresstoyou.

    • I think they mean that where they provide free postage to is defined by the Auspost network. It's horribly worded though.
