this picture looks Rude rather than Rode

Ends up being somewhat of a teabag arrangement if you're putting it on top of a camera. The slapping is not audible though.

Does it need a power source?

      Its right there in description:

9V battery powered - over 70 hours use (alkaline).

  • its a good mic its the same mic even Casey Nysat uses when he used to vlog. mounted to a 80D. it been my goto shotgun mic for a long time as well.

  • I've been using one for about 5 years now; it's a good microphone, particularly for hybrid photography / videography (because the microphone doesn't block your forehead from looking through the viewfinder) but I have finally had the plastic sheathing on the cable start to crack and peel open where it attaches to the microphone itself - it hasn't broken but I'm going to be looking keeping an eye out for specials on the Plus model (roughly twice as expensive though) as it features a replaceable cable, uses AAs (I have tons of Eneloops) or a proprietary lithium ion pack, has automatic powering on / off, and has a safety channel mode (a secondary, -10dB lower gain audio recording in case things get too loud and clip).

Edit: Decided to finally try and open it up to see how repairable the cable would be - turns out the single torx screw on the rear is all you need to remove to access everything; the cable has 2 quite accessible solder pads though squeezing a cable of proper dimensions through the hole in the casing will probably be a challenge.

  • While this is decent, the NTG Videomic is a much much more powerful mic than this. If you're a professional, I would suggest investing a bit more for it.

  • Good Mic. Easy to leave on and drain battery though, wish it had an optional auto turn off after 2 or 3 hours. Also easy to forget to turn on, so get in the habbit of doing a test record prior or risk mute recordings.

Other minor annoyance is the rubber band supports easily come off.

    • Rode ditched the rubber band support system a number of years back; all their VideoMic products these days (including the current versions of the VideoMic Pro) use the Rycote Lyre (had to Google that) suspension system - ie the 4 curved flexible plastic arms that you'd have to seriously abuse to break.

  • Back to $190. :-(
